  1. Well, I've converted from windoz to linux...with much help from you guys I must add. Now, seeing as I was a windoz user I was accustomed to doing my system maintenance using disk cleanup, defrag, adaware, spybot, etc... My question is, does linux have utilites like those, if so what are they? Or does linux not need utils like that? Thanks Mark
  2. what if I go into init 3, will that make a difference or is just doing it in KDE the best way to go about it? Mark
  3. I'm currently running GNOME 2.2.2 which came with SuSE 9.0, I was wondering if anyone has used GNOME 2.4 and what do you think of it? Mark
  4. I have also heard nothing but great reviews on debian...except the installer. I've been wanting to try debian for some time now but I don't feel confident enough with my linux skills yet to try and tackle that project. You summary definately makes me want to try it sometime in the near future though :D Mark
  5. :o ....4 days.....all that work.....and one day you're back in gnome? Just giving you a hard time, man ;) learning if anything, right? Linux is fun!....if you let it be fun! Have fun! I'm in suse now  .....couldn't resist you know with all this new hd space :D . Well, on to Mandrake, Debian, Slack, and LFS  yeah, after all that work it didnt' take me that long to go back to gnome. In fact, I actually reinstalled suse after that :P I spend on average 4 hours a night toying around with linux. I figure the more times I iinstall it, toy around with it, and break it the more I'll learn :D and to telll the truth I'm actually having A LOT of fun with it
  6. Well here is my review of kde 3.2, now keep in mind that I am a noob so my opinion may vary drastically from what yours may be. The gui was great looking and it had soooooooo many new options, actually maybe too many options. While all these new options coudl allow me to configure stuff with ease it also made the desktop environment seem rather cluttered and hard to navigate at times. KDE 3.2 also seems like it could be a resource hog, but I could be very wrong on this as welll. I'm now back using gnome since I think it's a bit more clean and easy for me to get around on. I do recommend that you try KDE 3.2 though, you may love it. Mark
  7. UPDATE: I tried this: #su #passwd #init 3 #cd /were/ever/kde32/is #rpm -Uvh --nodeps --force *.i586.rpm #init 5 seemed to along just fine, seemed as if all the rpms were pretty much finished...then my screen went black. The hdd light stayed on fro about another minute or two after that then stopped. I figured nothing was happening so I rebooted. Now my layout seems different (possible kde 3.2 change/??) how do I check to veryify exactly what version I'm runnning? Mark
  8. that's how I discovered the problem, I can't access it via the menu that's why I tried it via terminal and it stil didn't work. I have no clue what is going on with it. Mark
  9. the sis900 onboard ethernet is in fact supported in both mandrake 9.1 and 9.2, i had it on my ECS K7S5A and never had any troubles getting it to work. the module is simply "sis900" I tried it before (with help from this forum) and I guess I have the chipset for that SiS900 that isn't supported by 9.1 or 9.2 which is why I'm using SuSE 9.0 for now :P Once the final release of mdk10.0 comes out I'll give it a try again :D Mark
  10. d-216-195-130-149:/home/Mark # yast2& [1] 3042 d-216-195-130-149:/home/Mark # Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified y2controlcenter: cannot connect to X server :0.0 still didn't work for some reason
  11. Got the new 120gb hd. I did a minimal install of ML-beta1 cd1 and up'd to beta2. When I installed suse I told it to mount mandrake's /usr to /mlusr and I guess it decided to assume I meant /usr, as if a typo or something, and it overwrote ml's /usr/ Originally I threw suse in the trash. Now it's at the back of a file cabinet. So this is why you don't see me posting my results. Just thought I'd mention this. :D  that sucks man, definately not a good time. So far my experience with SuSE has been a good one (thanks to you guys helping me ;) ) I'm anxious to test out mandrak 10 when it comes out...hopefully it will support my SiS900 onboard ethernet chipset this time around :D Thanks for the info cyberjackle, I'll give that stuff a try when I get home tonight from work/class :D Mark
  12. yep, I installed those then tried installing the rpms. Now I just have that kde conflict and I don't know how to resolve it. Mark
  13. I reinstalled SuSE 9.0 a few days ago, this time I installed both the KDE and GNOME packages. Today was the first day that I tried logging in with GNOME, everything appeared to be fine untill I tried logging into yast via gui. So I then proceeded to try to get into yast via termial. Here is what happened: mark@d-216-195-130-149:~> su root Password: d-216-195-130-149:/home/Mark # yast2 Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified y2controlcenter: cannot connect to X server :0.0 d-216-195-130-149:/home/Mark # By the message I'm assuming that it has something to do with X, but I'm not sure why the problem is occuring or how to fix it due to my lack of experience with linux. Any help you guys could give would be appreciated. Thanks mark
  14. still having a problem, here's a listing of the rpm's and the command I issued: mark@d-216-195-130-149:~/KDE/ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/kde/stable/3.2/SuSE/ix8 6/9.0> su root Password: d-216-195-130-149:/home/Mark/KDE/ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/kde/stable/3.2/SuSE/ix86/9.0 # rpm -Uvh *.rpm error: Failed dependencies: kdebase3-SuSE <= 9.0 conflicts with kdebase3-3.2.0-7 libgnokii.so.1 is needed by kdepim3-3.2.0-3 graphviz is needed by kdevelop3-3.0.0-3 d-216-195-130-149:/home/Mark/KDE/ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/kde/stable/3.2/SuSE/ix86/9.0 # what would I do to resolve that conflict? Mark
  15. I'll give it a try in the morning when I'm sober  night Mark
  16. hmmmm, I wonder if it will support my SiS900 onboard ethernet (my chipset wasn't supported in 9.1 or 9.2, I'm hoping it is since I miss mandrake :D ) mark@d-216-195-130-149:~/KDE/ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/kde/stable/3.2/SuSE/ix8 6/9.0> su root Password: d-216-195-130-149:/home/Mark/KDE/ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/kde/stable/3.2/SuSE/ix86/9.0 # rpm -Uvh *.rpm error: Failed dependencies: kdebase3-SuSE <= 9.0 conflicts with kdebase3-3.2.0-7 libgnokii.so.1 is needed by kdepim3-3.2.0-3 graphviz is needed by kdevelop3-3.0.0-3 d-216-195-130-149:/home/Mark/KDE/ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/kde/stable/3.2/SuSE/ix86/9.0 # I'll probably wait till the final release comes out, but it sounds very promising :D Mark

  18. I'm currently downloading all the rpm's for 3.2, taking a long time but I'm sure it's a big file size for all those rpms. Mark
  19. I figured it out, I enlarged my text in the browser and I could see that there was a "--" before level instead of the "-" I was using :P Mark
