  1. Thanks rcxau! This is the best version of mplayer I've had yet! I think I'll be using it now more than xine or ogle.

Gnome2.4?.....I'm about half way there....dialup

Well, i personnaly know christian marillat (living in the same town)

You can trust his mplayer pacquages, as he is the official debian gnome maintener.

He has made a gnome 2.4, but debian doesn't want him to put them right now. They think it's too buggy ! (they better change the name of their "ustable" distribution !

I run sarge on my server and sid on one desktop, and i'm pissed off because sid doesn't have Xfree 4.3

Sid is far from cutting edge !

That's what make me try mandrake...

  2. Well, there is another way around it with this tip from Distrowatch  http://www.distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20030922

titled "How to upgrade to Mandrake Linux 9.2 without re-installing."

I did things slightly different after reading the two links in his post:

    #urpmi urpmi

    #urpmi.update -a

    #urpmi --auto-select --allow-force --no-verify-rpm --auto

    #urpmi kernel

    Nice !

why did you chose to use "--allow-force" ?

    @++

  3. 9.2 was supposed to be out yesterday, but still nothing on the servers...

Are they waiting for the final version of OOo ? (still in rc4)

Are they going to release a 9.2RC3 ?

They haven't changed anything in their schedule..

    If you have any info...

  4. Hi,

The problem is that i don't have access to lilo.conf

I tried to write to lilo:

    failsafe noacpi noapic

    but still doesn't work.

i tried to activate !!! the apic support in the bios but failed too

i tried the last knoppix but same problem

I tried to put a free bsd on it and it worked !

Seems like this computer doesn't like linux 2.4'

    :-(((((((((((((((

  5. Hi,

I'm trying to install Mandrake on a box of one of my friends.

    Tried first with 9.1

just after boot, black screen after the "press enter"

So i tried F1 to boot with the text option. It goes a little than freeze

I tried a knoppix (version from last chrismas), and same problem black screen after the "knoppix lang=fr"

    I tried a W2k install, and everything worked !

So this was not a big hardware problem..

    I Re-tried with a 9.1, this time i used the other kernel (2.2 instead of 2.4).

It worked and installation went fine.

But if i boot on the HD, just afer lilo again the black screen...

    Today i tried 9.2 rc2

    Same behaviour

While trying the text option, it crashes at about the same time as with 9.1, but this time i've got an error message of the kernel wich loops at the screen where there is the world "APIC"

I have search about that and it seems to be related to SMP, but this is a classical motherboard with via kt400 and one athlon 2800+

    Please help !

  6. Hi,

I have discovered recently the rpms from PLF, texsar, and java/flash/pdf on this server.

So i'm wondering, what other RPM do the Mandrake club access provides ?

I do not want to speak of subscribing to this club for suporting mandrake, this is another debate, today i'm only interested in the rmp you get.

    What are club rpm ?

  7. I was an happy W2k user.

then i moved from university and decided to biuld a router/firewall for adsl and a little lan at home/

With a lot of help from a friend, i installed a debian (stable) as a gateway/server. It has worked pretty well since. I recently made a new installation with a sarge. Installing and configurating everything is really not an easy task !

I tried to put a sid as a dual boot on my home desktop but it's pretty hard to use (no working sound...)

At work, i decided to move from windows to linux, and tried the mdk 9.1. I was very please to see an esily build system wich just works ! I was productivity right out of the box, with an already nice selection of the best apps.

urpmi is a great tool, reminding me of apt-get. Everything is pretty well rounded. (supermount, localisation, sound...)

I find it complicated to make some stuff work (java, pdf, flash) until i discovered this site and the already made rpm...

Now i'm starting to play with plf ad texsar rpm...

For me, a desktop distribution should work nicely and fast right out of the box, & should support hardware autodetection & should solve dependancies.

So the 2 distributions that are interesting for me are mandrake and hard disk install of knoppix.

I will try the hard knoppix at home to replace my not so good sid, but mandrake fullfil all my needs right now...

    And i am downloading the 9.2 rc2....
