    installing k3b

This was a Fedora Core 1 machine. I sometimes post questions in Software - even though most members would rightfully assume I am using mandrake. I probably didn't get any replies cause people saw I was on Fedora, so it was my fault. I am so spoiled on apt-get that in the past year I have just been using RH9 and more recently FC 1. I just couldn't get it installed under FC 1. The ./configure wanted some kind of prefix, and I didn't know what to do with that. So I googled, found an apt repository with k3b, and tried to install in with apt. Kept giving me "libsamplerate.so.0 is an uninstallable dependency...". I have used apt like crazy with RedHat during the past year and have never had a dependency problem. So I was pretty ticked by then, and posted here. No replies though for a long time, so I just said "screw it" and re-installed RH9 over my FC 1 install. Set up apt and did apt-get install k3b - just like I did under FC 1 - but with RH it installed perfectly. I still don't know why it works for RH but not FC, but at least I have k3b installed now.
  2. I like linux just the way it is, not too hard and not too easy, just right. Besides, there are harder distros and distros that hold your hand alot, so take your pick. I like the ones in the middle.

    nvidia driver

thanks steve. I figured it out before I saw your post. I used vi to do the edit. I figured it was something stupid I was doing...

    nvidia driver

I am trying to get my old RH9 box back to accelerated nvidia 3D. I have done the nvidia thing a few times before, with mdk, and with RH, but this time I can't get thru with it. I d/l the driver, change etc/inittab to runlevel 3, rebooted to get out of X, ran the sh NVIDIA-blah blah, but then when I try to edit the etc/X11/XF86Config file to change "nv" to "nvidia" I get the following error: Gtk-WARNING: cannot open display I'm using gedit to edit these files. It's probably something stupid I am doing
  5. seems like a vicious circle to me. MS lovers get MS certs, and linux lovers get MS certs.... so MS certs will always be more desirable. Personally I'd get certified in Basket Weaving before getting an MS cert. Maybe not a good career choice but I have my principles...
  6. Not me, I need maybe a years more experience. I'd be interested in getting one of the minor linux certs maybe by next summer. Some colleges are looking into offering certs, including the college I'm at. They haven't said what certs they are planning to offer, though. They are polling students now to evaluate the interest.
  7. yeah, I was gonna try apt-get install gnome-whatever, but I haven't tried it yet. I was hoping the dist-upgrade would upgrade gnome, but it doesn't. Or maybe I have to be out of gnome when I do that...? I did have the dag repository in my sources.list file. No big deal I guess, since I'm gonna give the machine to my 6 yr old. He has no preference either way... he just cares about games.
  8. actually, I just downloaded all 4 FC2 ISOs last night. I was gonna put them on my new linux box I am building. My RH9 box is an old P-III, 1GHz, 256Mb RAM machine which is still pretty decent. I have been using it to practice on, learning linux, learning gnome, learning intalling s/w, etc. I was just asking cuz I wondered if it was possible to upgrade gnome 2.2 to 2.4, but it is probably too complicated. I am going to let my 6-yr old boy have my RH9 machine after I get my new one built in about 2 weeks.
  9. The things they were complaining about are probably things that 90% of people don't care about. I did like the comment about how FC may screwup your windoze booting. They said "this isn't a bug - its a security feature..."
  10. Is this possible to do in a not too compilcated way? I have RH 9 with gnome 2.2, but when I temporarily installed FC1 on the same box, I liked gnome 2.4 better. Then I re-installed RH 9 over FC1, so I am back to gnome 2.2. I wasn't having much luck with apt when I had FC1, so I got mad and re-installed RH 9. Apt works great with RH 9, but I miss gnome 2.4. I used apt to upgrade everything in RH9, and then I did the apt-get dist-upgrade to upgrade the base packages, in the hope that it would upgrade gnome, but it didn't. I googled this a lilttle, but many results just ended up being people saying to just install FC1 instead of RH9, to get gnome 2.4 in an easier way.
  11. ouch. I was downloading FC 2 disc 1 when I read the above, so I cancelled the d/l.

    installing k3b

I got the tar for k3b, and did the ./configure a couple of times. I keep getting some error about .... I forget... something kde header ... use a different prefix or something... As per the INSTALL file you should do ./cofigure --prefix='kde-config --prefix' I'm not sure what to type for prefix. Anyways, I got pissed and googled install k3b, and found some instructions for using apt to install it. I added the repository to my sources.list file that was specified in the instructions, and tried: apt-get install k3b It found k3b, but it tells me some stupid dependency in uninstallable: libsamplerate.so.0 This is talking about FC 1 by the way. I remember installling k3b with apt-get when I had RH 9, and it installed without complaint. This is really irritating as hell, that installling a stupid cd burning program is an evening project. Sorry if this has been posted somewhere before, I did search, but I don't have much luck searching this board.
  13. that's me... the average joe user Iagree that RH / FC look more professional than, say, mdk. I know its the guts of the OS, not the prettiness of the distro, that does the work, but nice looking distros are just... uh... nicer looking... From what little I used mdk (8.1 & 9.0) I was a little turned off by the rougher look of it. I went from mdk 8.1, to mdk 9.0, then to RH 9, and now to FC 1. I'd like to just stick to one distro to learn everything on, and then maybe check out some others after I know what I'm doing. I think I'll use FC 2 to learn on.

    card readers

I'm looking to get one of those 3.5" drives that have a floppy slot, and slots for various cards. I don't really care about the floppy drive part of it, but the ones that I have found that I like the looks of (black faces) have a floppy slot. If I can't get it working right, I'll just come here...
  15. what about the segmentation fault ? (see 3 posts above this) Maybe I need to reinstall apt, or maybe I messed up my etc/apt/sources.list file (I got into it with vi, and then did no changes and closed the terminal window. Then later I got into it again with gedit and inserted another repository line under the one that was already there. I copied & pasted the line direct from the website, cuz the site showed you exactly what to add to your sources.list file, so its probably not a typo. Maybe I messed something up by editing the file. I think apt worked ok before I did that. sure is easy to break stuff.
  16. ok, I might as well ask this here. I installed apt on my FC1 machine yesterday. I got apt at freshrpms.net. My etc/apt/sources.list file has only one uncommented source for fedora core 1. When I type apt-get upgrade, it works for a few seconds, and then says segmentation fault and returns to the root prompt. what causes this ??

    card readers

veedub - that sounds like some kind of usb card reader that you can plug in to the front of your machine. I wouldn't mind that, but I was referring to actual 3.5 inch drives that have various slots for different type cards, and that you permanently install inside your case where a floppy drive would go, and connect to an internal usb port. Yes, my canon camera came with various s/w. When I plug in the camera to my win2k machine, Canon ZoomBrowser starts up automatically and I can d/l the pics, and work with them. Obviously, that s/w won't be used with linux, but I'm sure gnome/kde has progs that do about the same thing. As long as I can d/l the pics on my canon powershot digital camera on a linux box, I'll be happy. I just didn't know if it was better to plug in the usb cable from the camera to the computer, or better to get one of those card readers.
  18. No, from what little experience I have, so far RH 9 was my favorite. I am using FC 1 now because it happened to come with a linux book I bought to learn the basics with. I like FC 1 so far. By "one of biggies" I guess I meant because suse and mandrake are distros you have to pay for. Looks like I was wrong about mandrake, you can d/l it free. In the past, I have always paid for my mdk distros (8.1 and 9.0) to support the company. I haven't followed mandrake much since 9.0, and I thought that due to their financial troubles they had started requiring Official releases to be paid for. If I do decide to go with mdk 10 official, I will buy it to support the company. However, if FC 2 is a great distro, I'd like to use that. I'll look for FC 2 comments on this board before I spend time d/l it.
  19. I was hoping Qchem's Fedora Core 2 - My first impressions would continue a little longer... but anyway, I was wondering what peoples' opinions of FC 2 are, after installing/using it for a while ? I am currently using FC 1 as a "learning" distro. after I get some experience, I'd like to move to FC 2, if I don't decide to buy one of the biggies like mdk or suse.

    card readers

When figuring out what to put on my new linux box, I decided I don't want to install a floppy drive, but to put a card reader in its place. One of those things that read compact flash cards, smart media, or whatever. My canon PowerShot uses compact flash, so I guess I don't have a need for the other cards. Anyway, I was wondering if these things work ok in linux, either out of the box, or maybe with a little screwing around. Maybe I don't really need one of the card readers anyway. My canon camera plugs into a usb port to d/l pics on my win2k machine. I suppose it would work that way also on a linux box. Since you can plug digital cameras into a f/w or usb port, what do people use the card readers for?
  21. that may be what the author meant when he remarked that apt was "better" than urpmi. Maybe he wasn't actually comparing the progs themselves, but the usability of the programs. I just installed apt & synaptic on my FC1 machine today. I installed a few things with apt on the cmd line, and I tried out synaptic also. I don't like synaptic at all. I think just typing a couple of words in a terminal is easier than figuring out what buttons to click. By the way, a linux book I am currently reading, when discussing installing programs, and on the apt section - the book discusses the cmd line way, and then the synaptic way. Then the author says "after you try apt at the cmd line you will probably never want to do it that way again..." What ? How hard it is to type apt-get install progname?
  22. I don't know what that is. I didn't have mdk 9.0 on my machine very long, and didn't really check into it that much. I remember alot of questions and threads on this board from people trying to set up urpmi, and always being directed to some website called easy urpmi or something.
  23. I think this course will be not too cutting edge in term of new java things. In fact, I have been holding off a couple of months waiting for the course to be updated to a newer textbook. The textbook it is being updated to is about 9 months old, so I suppose it would be on java 1.4. Since this is an elective course, it will mostly be programming applets. I don't expect a real hard-core course. I am a Information Technology major, not a Computer Science major - and as you know, CS classes are much more programming oriented. The only programming classes available at this school are the one java course mentioned above, and several VB courses - intro to advanced, and several C, C+, C++ courses. C courses are not required for I.T. majors, if fact the only programming required for the I.T. degree is the Intro to VB - which I took and got an A. I've been going thru the Sun java tutorials on their website, and I own a few books, which cover java 1.4. I installed sdk 1.4 as well as Eclipse. And also I have TextPad - which came with one of my books. I do have a "procedural brain". I did very well way back when I took COBOL courses. I guess I will take the course since it looks like I will have my own java tutor: how can I turn that down ?
  24. that was what I was looking for, thanks. That's why I pointed out in the first post that I had not used urpmi, so I was not dissing it. I vaguely remember trying to set up urpmi (by following the easy urpmi threads in this forum) back when I had mdk 9.0, but I guess I never got it going. I thought the set-up for apt on my RH 9 machine was very easy - of course, I had the magazine article to refer to.
  25. the kid won when the case was finally decided, but I know what you are saying. I'll worry about it later.
