  1. A further follow up.

I restored the power controls. Rebooted tested a run of 1hour with no mouse movement (mouse turned off).

    Result still no screen blanking.

Reinstalled screensavers setting for 1hour kick in. Rebooted and again tested 1hour no mouse movement.

Result Screensaver kicked in at 1hour and no screen blanking.

So the answer seems to be as simple as adding "false" to Option "DPMS" in Section "Device" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

    as per below....

    Section "Device"

    Identifier "device1"

    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"

BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce 420 series and later"

    Driver "nvidia"

    Option "DPMS" "false"

    Option "DynamicTwinView" "false"

    Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals"

    EndSection

    Also adding...

    option "DPMS" "FALSE"

    to Section "Monitor"...

    as per below...

    Section "Monitor"

    Identifier "monitor1"

    VendorName "Plug'n Play"

Doing anything with xset is pointless because any changes you make are eliminated when you reboot.

    See for reference

    http://www.x.org/archive/X11R7.5/doc/man/man1/xset.1.html

take note of the line "These settings will be reset to default values when you log out".

Regarding the solution, see below for reference which I used as a guide.

  2. Update.

    I think I have found a solution.

In xorg.conf I added "false" as shown as below

    Section "Device"

    Identifier "device1"

    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"

BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce 420 series and later"

    Driver "nvidia"

    Option "DPMS" "false"

    Option "DynamicTwinView" "false"

    Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals"

    EndSection

and Option DPMS FALSE as also shown below

    Section "Monitor"

    Identifier "monitor1"

    VendorName "Plug'n Play"

    # TV fullscreen mode or DVD fullscreen output.

I also have no Screensaver apps now installed and all Power control apps disabled.

Rebooted and appears to be no more blanking of screens even after at least 1/2 hour trial periods so far.

    Cheers Ian. Thanks. John

  3. Thanks Ian

. I tried that but it only works for as long as you are working. As soon as you reboot it is back to same old same old again.

When I googled XSET, I saw it stated in xset that any changes are only temporary and reset upon rebooting. So all the possible

various changes made to xset are rather pointless once you reboot. How stupid is that ?.

This whole blanking system is totally idiotic. I have tried a method that had a script to try to stop DPSM at the boot-up

and although the method seemed to proceed OK, upon rebooting found problem to be still there.

I can't find a way to get rid of DPSM altogether, since it serves no real purpose for my use.

If you have any ideas on how to do that it would be great.

This is an example where KDE has really dropped the ball, making a setting that cannot be changed or removed permanently and easily for those of us who

have no need for such a setting.

    Cheers. John.

  4. Well that made no difference. I ran a long video from file and it also occurred when videoing on the internet on Firefox.

Timed it to exactly 10 minutes so it is not a random thing.

I also noticed it also shows a little pop-up saying "HDMI Energy Saving". This was why I originally thought it was the individual monitors causing the problem.

    John.

  5. Thank you Ian.

It is a strange relief to discover someone else has been having the same problem. I already had stopped all power control stuff

and deactivated the Power Miser in the NVIDIA settings.

I have always selected the screen-saver setting and for activation after 60 minutes.

The one thing I haven't tried is your suggestion of not selecting screen-saver at all. Will try that now.

Will let you know if that works.

    Cheers. John.

  6. John, I've had this problem, it's not the monitors, rather something in the distro that is ignoring the fact that when watching a video, the screensaver shouldn't kick in or power management causing them to blank. If I remember correctly, there can be a setting in the program you are using to watch videos, that stops the screen from blanking or screensaver from kicking in. Changing from one distro to another fixed the problem. Once, I had it working, then using another distro it stopped working, then switched to something else, and was working again as it should. So this for sure, rules out the issue that its your monitors, but rather a distro inconvenience.

This annoyed me previously also, and in the end ended up stopping power management from turning the monitors off, or even from having the screensaver set. Then if I wanted to lock the computer, I just did it with a CTRL-ALT-L to activate the screensaver, rather than have it set for a certain time to come on.

  7. Hello everyone.

I have 3 different computers. All have Mageia-5. One computer has an LG 24" LCD and an LG 27" LED Monitor.

The second one has a Polyview 17" LCD Monitor.

The third one uses my LG 42" LED TV.

The two using monitors have all been blanking all three monitors after about 10 Minutes when there is no mouse

or keyboard activity even though I maybe watching videos or reading text. The computer using the TV as monitor

doesn't do this so is not a problem.

It would seem to be caused by the monitors themselves but I have not been able to find the setting to change this.

All three of the computers are using Nvidia type cards but two different makers. I have looked into the Nvidia

settings and set what needs to be set to stop this but to no avail. I have also done the same with each monitors

on-board settings again with no solution.

Any ideas will be very much appreciated.

  8. Thanks again Ian.

Yes to the final comment. When I select restart and do nothing else it runs the full 30second timer and I would like to cut it to about 10 seconds. There doesn't seem to be any real purpose to it being set at 30 seconds.

    Cheers. John

  9. Thanks Ian for your response.

The time is not dictated by services having to be closed down, I am pretty sure because it is the same on all 3 of my Mageia computers

and shows in the countdown displayed on the pop up listing the choices for shutting down etc. If shut down is selected then the timer stops no longer operates and the procedure only then finally takes about 8 to10 seconds or so to complete.

It is when you select reboot that the full 30 seconds takes place. There is a config somewhere that is set at 30 seconds but I don't know where to look.

What ever file that popup is, is where I think the timer instruction is but I don't know where or what that file is.

I hope you see what I am getting at and hope to do.

    Cheers. John

  10. Hello everyone.

Currently when you right click on the desktop and select Leave and then Restart Computer it takes an agonising 30 seconds.

I would like to change it to 10 seconds which is more than a reasonable time for all practical purposes.

Where do I go into to change it. Prefer GUI if possible but not rigid on this.

Thanks in advance. John (now 81 years young) :-)

  11. Does anyone else know if Mageia is offline at the moment ?. I haven't been able to raise it for about the Past 24 hours or more.

I am wondering if it is in relation to the pending release of Mageia-5 which has been delayed numerous times. I hope it has not gone under. That would be a terrible tragedy.

I am hoping that at worst it is possibly just the servers are temporarily down though some fault or something like that.

    Cheers. John.

  12. Hello Rowan.

Maybe if you try Mageia-4 you might have better luck, especially since it came from the earlier Mandrivas. Because you are already familiar with Mandrake/Mandriva you will feel quite at home with Mageia.

I should point out that Mageia was started with a big swag of the great and respected programmers who left or were made redundant by the Mandriva shenagigans at the time.

Many current Members of Mageia are still great faithfuls here at MUB.

Anyhow give it a try, you could be pleasently surprised.

    Cheers. John.

  13. A follow up.

I noted that your helper version was 22 and mine was 17.

I installed 22 and that was the answer. All of the videos that I had problems with I have now been able to re-download and they play properly.

I had not realised that there was an updated version available because I thought that I had set things up for auto notification of updated versions in apps for Firefox.

Clearly this wasn't coming through for VideoHelper.

    So problem is now solved.

    Thanks again greg.

    Cheers. John.

  14. Thanks Greg for the idea. I haven't tried it and likely would work but that is going around the problem rather than

trying to determine what the cause of the problem is and then finding a solution, which is what I would prefer.

I am using Download Helper 4.9.17

    Cheers. John.

  15. Thank you Greg.

I installed the Mediainfo tool as suggested.

I found that all the MP4s that worked OK all had Audio headings an data as were expected to have.

However all the MP4s that worked without sound had NO Audio heading and so no sound data shown. none, zero, zilch, nil.

Since all of these faulty downloads were via Firefox this would now seem to be a problem with Firefox somehow or the video Downloaders which are DownloadHelper

or Flash VideoDown Loader. I have checked their settings and can see nothing that would seem to be out of place.

    John.

  16. I have 4 video players installed in my Mageia-4 machine.

I find Xsine not worth the time because it takes just about for ever to set, it is just seems so complicated.

My old faithful, Totem is totally useless nowdays since it now seems to not play practically most of regular formats it used to play

up until about a year ago.

Svlc and Dragon will play the U-Tube sourced MP4's but with no sound. However they do play MP4's from other sources quite OK. They also play AVI, MOV and other formats quite OK.

Any ideas I can try or explanations, please.

    Thanks in advance. John.

  17. Thanks for the Info TYME.

I second your view and that is why I still call Mandrivausers HOME. The very thing that Pandora and others do over at Mageia forum is try to help. It just takes one individual to make things uncomfortable especially for newbies and even for long term users who ask for help.

Good to see you are still sparking AOK. If you haven't tried Mageia then I strongly recommend it.

I see Mint has been flavour of the month for quite some time now but I have been able to count on Mageia doing what I need and considering it has lots of the original Mandriva team still involved I feel no real need to venture off. Mageia has been almost constantly No.3 or No.4, and without the publicity that Mint or Ubuntu seem to get, and was even No.2 for a while.

    Cheers. John.

  18. Thanks Tux for your reply. It helps to reinforce my belief that the system was fast and powerful enough.

I am trying some of the alternative apps but frankly they can do far less than Openshot can do. They are so basic that they do pretty much the same as one another.

Openshot seems to be the only one that is more like a full editor where one can do a variety of editing stuff like titling, effects and so on.

So far I seem to have pinned down the reason for my problem being the fact that I was using my HDD in a USB3 dock on my older machine which was using an early USB3 capable mainboard.

I forgot that it was always unreliable when using USB3 so I generally used it in USB2 mode instead and it was always OK.

I am currently using it again in USB2 mode and do not seem to be having any troubles.

    Cheers. John.

  19. Hello all.

Not much action here for a while, I see.

I think I can change that for a little time. :-)

I am using Openshot in Mageia-2 (fully updated).

The video clips are fairly lengthy and I am clipping them and joining up.

The App and system seem to freeze up regularly during the reviewing and clipping stage and I haven't got to the final joining up stage.

The box has 8Gbs of DDR3 memory and what I think is a reasonably fast video card.

Plus it is using an Intel 64Gb SSD as the Root and Home drive and and all HDDs are Sata3.

Is there something I am missing in all this. Note all the video clips are on a HDD in a USB3 Dock.

Is the Video card likely to be inadequate or is it something else.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

    Cheers. John.

  20. What you describe is what I thought you meant in your earlier post. What you describe is what I have always done.

My method is just a little simpler.

I open Konsole, type su -, enter, root password, enter, type dolphin, enter, then just look for /usr/share/config/kdm/kdm.rc as you did earlier in your recent post.

Click on kdm.rc and look for the line allow root login and change the word false to true and save the change. all done.

This way you only use CLI to open Dolphin and one would be awfully dumb and stupid to flub the system from that point onwards.

I am glad you are set OK now.

    John.

  21. Hello Doc. Welcome to MUB.

I too set up my system for easy physical root access. I always setup using the /kdm/kdm.rc routine that you mention. Have done so for years.

I copped a lot of flack over the years for even mentioning it and how to do it but I have just learned to ignore the flack.

When you consider that with using a live-cd or a cd with photorec on it you can gain access to data on a computer ( unless it is especially encrypted ) the whole root isolation is in some ways a bit of a joke.

Anything I value I keep on two Hard Drives used in an external dock and when not in use are physically locked away and absolutely NO personal information is kept on the computers at all.

So even if anyone manages to crack into my system via the internet, and no one has in all the time I have been using computers, then they are simply going to waste their time fullstop.

I am currently using Mageia-2. Haven't used Mandriva since it fell off the rails. I tried Mandriva2011 but was not impressed since it seemed to no longer resemble the great OS I used and relied on over the years.

I'm sorry I cannot help with your question about the alternative to editing kdm.rc but I am sure one of the great members here will help you if they can.

    Cheers. John
