Thanks guys.
I haven't networked my acer to my desktop. Ill do that tomorrow. Once thats done, Ians command should work fine from what I understand.
-
Thanks Ian.
That sounds good. Looks like I'm about to read up on ssh.
-
20GB is normally a waste for / . 10-12GB (like you thought yourself too) is more appropiate, I guess with a very large disk it doesn't matter but with 120GB it might be better not to waste 8-10GB.
With the easy peasy running off a 4gb stick, 20gb does seem excessive.
How difficult would it be to link my acer laptop running easy peasy to my main box running mandriva to burn a dvd copy of the recovery partition? I've never tried such a messy task.
-
Yes, fat32 has a limit of 4GB per file size.
Under Windows you can convert a FAT32 filesystem to NTFS, so if you have a Windows XP system or anything Windows NT/2000 or higher, then you can use the convert command from the command prompt in Windows to change the filesystem. For example, if the USB disk when connected is E:, then:
convert e: /fs:ntfs
will convert it. Of course, replace e: with whatever drive letter is assigned to your disk when you connect it to the Windows system.
Thanks Ian. Wow, is it really that simple? Thats amazing.
Yes, I have a Xp os installed, up and running...Man, that thing is sooooo slow.
-
My latest little problem is a relatively simple one.
I have an external hard drive that I use to do complete back ups of my data from time to time. The trouble is that I didn't consider the file system at first. It came formatted and I just used it.
The drama is that I can not back up my large files eg *.iso's and others. This is a file system restriction I believe.
I think the usb drive is a fat32 file system from memory.
I guess I'll probably stick with changing it to a NTFS if possible, as I probably need to access it from windows from time to time.
Can I change file system easily? Is it possible to do it without copying everything off, change filesystem, then back on?
Dolphin lists the usb drive as VFAT, I'm unsure how to confirm that it is fat32.
Any help most appreciated.
-
Thanks all. So I was on the right track.
Can any one guide me in backing up the recovery partion?
I believe that it is /dev/sda1. Its listed as a fat32 file system, labeled PQSERVICE, 4.88 GiB. I dont believe it's mounted.
I have an external usb hard disk I could back it up to, as the little acer doesn't have a cd/dvd drive.
-
Thanks guys, I have it installed and operating.
When running the command:
rpm -ivh *.rpm
Which directory should I be in?
.../Desktop/OO_rpms/OOO310_m11_native_packed-2_en-US.9399/RPMS/desktop-integration
I ran the rpm command in /RPMS and it didn't appear in the menus. So run the mandriva rpm in /desktop-integration and now I have menus.
-
Try it again, then verify that you removed those packages, by doing:
rpm -qa | grep -i openoffice.org
Thanks Ian, I've never had to us that quote mark.
As for the download, I will have another go, and see what happens I guess. Thanks for the help!
Edit: My previous downloaded file is 25mb. The file I'm downloading now is some 173mb, so yes, I have a issue there. Current version coming down the line now.

What rpms do you have in this directory? Looks like you are missing dependencies for ooobasis3.1-binfilter
desktop-integration/ ooobasis3.1-onlineupdate-3.1.0-9399.i586.rpm ooobasis3.1-binfilter-3.1.0-9399.i586.rpm ooobasis3.1-testtool-3.1.0-9399.i586.rpm ooobasis3.1-core03-3.1.0-9399.i586.rpm openoffice.org3-draw-3.1.0-9399.i586.rpm ooobasis3.1-en-US-3.1.0-9399.i586.rpm openoffice.org3-en-US-3.1.0-9399.i586.rpm ooobasis3.1-en-US-res-3.1.0-9399.i586.rpm userland/ ooobasis3.1-graphicfilter-3.1.0-9399.i586.rpm
Ian, I just noticed something. I haven't uninstalled my default install:
[root@localhost RPMS]# rpm -qa | grep -i openoffice.org openoffice.org-filter-binfilter-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-help-en_GB-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-draw-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-core-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-java-common-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-openclipart-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-writer-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-style-galaxy-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-impress-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-calc-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-l10n-en_GB-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-style-crystal-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-base-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-common-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 [root@localhost RPMS]# rpm -e 'rpm -qa | grep -i openoffice.org' error: package rpm -qa | grep -i openoffice.org is not installed
-
Here are the results of the first two commands, they were identical:
openoffice.org-filter-binfilter-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-help-en_GB-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-draw-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-core-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-java-common-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-openclipart-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-writer-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-style-galaxy-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-impress-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-calc-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-l10n-en_GB-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-style-crystal-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-base-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0 openoffice.org-common-3.0-1.1mdv2009.0
So then I ran
rpm -e `rpm -qa | grep -i openoffice.org`
Then I changed to ../Desktop/OO_rpms/OOO310_m11_native_packed-2_en-US.9399/RPMS
rpm -ivh *.rpm error: Failed dependencies: ooobasis3.1-calc is needed by ooobasis3.1-binfilter-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-draw is needed by ooobasis3.1-binfilter-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-impress is needed by ooobasis3.1-binfilter-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-math is needed by ooobasis3.1-binfilter-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-writer is needed by ooobasis3.1-binfilter-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-core01 is needed by ooobasis3.1-core03-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-core01 is needed by ooobasis3.1-en-US-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-core01 is needed by ooobasis3.1-graphicfilter-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-core01 is needed by ooobasis3.1-onlineupdate-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-core01 is needed by ooobasis3.1-testtool-3.1.0-9399.i586 openoffice.org3 is needed by openoffice.org3-draw-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-draw is needed by openoffice.org3-draw-3.1.0-9399.i586 openoffice.org3 is needed by openoffice.org3-en-US-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-en-US-base is needed by openoffice.org3-en-US-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-en-US-calc is needed by openoffice.org3-en-US-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-en-US-draw is needed by openoffice.org3-en-US-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-en-US-help is needed by openoffice.org3-en-US-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-en-US-impress is needed by openoffice.org3-en-US-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-en-US-math is needed by openoffice.org3-en-US-3.1.0-9399.i586 ooobasis3.1-en-US-writer is needed by openoffice.org3-en-US-3.1.0-9399.i586
Oh dear, what have I done?
-
Scarecrow,
I am only doing the update now as I have been doing some big assignments and didn't want to run the risk of borking my Oo install.
I have extracted the rpms, and gone to the desktop-integration folder and deleted the rpms other than the mandriva one.
Now for removing the default Open office install? I'm not sure how to go about this correctly. Can you lend a hand?
Thanks!

Hi all,
I have an Acer Aspire One. I have the winblows version. It has, supposively, the 120gb conventional hard disk. I have use of around 100gb due to the stupid recovery partition. I already have used 40gb of the drive. Alot of that data is not windows exclusive so I can move it off of there should I need to.
I intend to dual boot, as there are a couple of programs that are exclusively windows
I was thinking of a separate /home partition should I change distros.
So I think I need a / partition, /home partition and a /swap partition.
Whats the current rule of thumb with /swap partitions? This aspire has 1gb ram.
I was thinking 10-15gb for / partition
Spread the remaining over the windows partition and the /home partition.
I have currently got Easy Peasy running off a usb drive, and it is sooo much more impressive speedwise than xp, I can hardly believe it. These little machines rock with a decent OS :D
Whats everyones view of the above suggestions regarding partitions?
And does anyone know if I am able to copy off the recovery partition before I install? Just to be safe? I am still such a newb when it comes to stuff like that.
Thanks everyone.

Can anyone advise if the updates to kde4.3 are running smooth now?
How is the desktop going for those that have updated?

New updates install version3.0.13 today.

My HP scanner is a all-in-one, not sure if that makes any difference
-
Ok i got it working now. I had to find the device and who owned it.
as root
lsusb
I found the device was part of group 189.
I had to create a user group for the scanner:
groupadd -g 189 scanner
then add me to the group
gpasswd -a username scanner
Then I needed to change that group root owned the scanner.
chown root.scanner /dev/bus/usb/001/003
I did not figure this out myself, I had the help of newsgazer and blingme from the mandriva irc chat.
Many thanks to them!
-
Iscan can be run as root. Not as user though.
In etc/group i believe there should be a scanner entry. Is this correct?

According to the cooker mailing list, KDE 4.3 will not be officially backported to the 2009.0 or 2009.1 repos. However it is now available at: kde/stable/4.3.0/Mandriva
Checking the readme notes shows:
* Mandriva KDE 4.3.0 unnoficial packages for 2009.0 and 2009.1Further questions about packages, contact helio at kde dot org
Issues found at this moment:
- x86_64 instalation with skype have 32 bits pacakges installed as well. For a
smooth upgrade, enable main32 repositories too
- 2009.0 builds deosn't have falcon language bindings
Repositories:
urpmi.addmedia kde43 <KDE_MIRRORS>/Mandriva/<DISTRO>/<ARCH>/media/kde43
urpmi.addmedia kde43-noarch <KDE_MIRRORS>/Mandriva/<DISTRO>/noarch/media/kde43
where:
<KDE_MIRRORS> URL of the mirror choose in download.kde.org
<DISTRO> any of 2009.0 or 2009.1
<ARCH> i586 or x86_64

Given most are running 32 bits (I am :D ) only falcon language bindings will be a problem. I presume they mean the falcon programming language? http://www.falconpl.org/
That reminds me.....I really need to get back into programming.......

I agree, it's a shame that KDE4.3 wont be in official repos.
I am happy that it has been packaged unofficially for Mandy though. I ran an unofficial version of 4.2.1 and it was good. Version 4.2.4 was a huge improvement though.

Hi scarecrow.
This is as user, matthew
$ groups matthew
This is as root
groups root

New information.
I can access sane and the scanner when running as root, ie kdesu xsane.
So it's a permission/grouping issue. I'm not sure how to resolve it from here.
Any help most appreciated.

Thanks guys!
sane-find-scanner # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer. # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter. found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [hp], product=0x3f11 [psc 1310 series ]) at libusb:006:002 found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x0131 [EPSON Scanner]) at libusb:001:003 # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. Ok so it's detected.
rpm -ivh --force iscan-2.20.1-1.i386.rpm Preparing... ########################################### [100%] 1:iscan ########################################### [100%] [root@localhost Desktop]#
I assume that means it was installed correctly?

And it appears I could install the interpreter correctly.
I loaded up x-sane, and had the option to choose either the espson or the HP all in one. But when I choose the epson v300 I am told access to resource is denied. Is this because I installed the two rpm's as root?

Hello all,
I decided to purchase a V300 Photo scanner after much looking around.
Time comes to install it and I'm stuck.
I already have a HP1315 all-in-one and it works perfectly.
I have plugged in the V300, and in MCC it is detected as an Epson scanner. Unfortunately it's not listed.
So I head over to get the 'official drivers'. Epson sponsored site...I assume
Proceed to the download page, put in appropriate details...I'm running 32 bit. I have downloaded what I believe I need. These being:
iscan-2.20.1-1.i386.rpm 486,814 bytes
esci-interpreter-gt-f720-0.0.1-2.i386.rpm 381,387 bytes
I could not install iscan due to the iscan-sane package being present, this is a known issue, so I have removed it as suggested.
When I try to install iscan i get:
# rpm -ivh iscan-2.20.1-1.i386.rpmPreparing... ########################################### [100%]
file /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epkowa.la from install of iscan-2.20.1-1.i386 conflicts with file from package libsane1-devel-1.0.19-7mdv2009.0.i586
How should I proceed from here?
