Getting around to tidying up my install on my Acer aspire one.
When booting using the default settings, I use verbose and it all goes well, then the mouse pointer shows (prior to the login screen) and it hangs.
I have not tried safe settings yet. If I use no acpi it boots fine it seems.
Other issues I have picked up:
Volume is a little low
Cant find a battery level monitor
Cant enable 3d graphics-I'm pretty sure that these rockets do 3d.
Other than that it works really well.
As usual, I'm not sure where to start with these issues. Any help most appreciated.

As time goes by, and kernel updates get done, my boot menus get longer and longer.
It's time for me to learn how to remove unnecessary kernels and their associated friends.
I guess I can remove kernel entries in the grub menu through MCC and the boot section. I can use the GUI interface to remove old kernel, devs, nvidia driver rpms.
What about the actual kernels themselves? Hows best to remove them?
Or am I going the wrong way about all this?
-
My update went perfectly. Real fast download (unusual for Australia!) and no dodgy rpms or anything.
My KDE 4.3.5 seems to be fine so far. Fingers crossed.
-
Yay finally, it's been released as an official update!
See: MUB Notification
and: Official Advisory
It hasn't shown on my mirror yet. Will give it a few hours/days.

Thanks jkerr.
I guess I just gotta wait :)

This update i guess is well rested now after a goos period in the testing
media, time to release it as update and fix the remaining issue(s) (Amarok)
later on a fresh update.
Thanks for your very good feedback Philippe ;)

I'm a little lost. I have been waiting for this to turn up as an update, but so far no luck. Do I need to enable backports, or some other trick to pick this up?

OK, thanks! I had it installed all along and didn't even know it! :D
Yeah, I been through that! I asked around on IRC to learn that though.
-
You can always install the binary edition. Or, you can also use go-openoffice which boasts even greater MS compatibility.
I haven't used go-openoffice. I changed to open office as I was sick of continually changing file formats...ie. Files I created under Windows 98 are now unreadable by the later Office programs.
I am assuming that go-openoffice uses open file formats so I can access them in years to come?...I only need to be able to create MS file formats to send assignments through to the uni.
-
Is it likely to come through the repos?????
Unfortunately I need to submit my current uni assignments in Office 2007 format
I can't see it in the testing repo.
-
I think 4.4 is meant to be used for 2010.1. So I will do a complete install for that...I'm also a little wary of running a .0 version of kde, it seems to move so fast that they can be a little rough around the edges, but the updates come quick enough to fix that.
-
Is there anyway to find out how the testing is going on this? A mailing list or other?
-
A waste of effort, IMHO.
4.4.0 is very, very close, so why packaging 400+ MB which will be obsolete within ten days?
I see your point of view, but I see it as a major update, where as KDE4.3.5 is mostly a bug fix, and stability is what I'm missing.
But, I was unaware that KDE4.3.5 was likely coming through the official repos, and from experience, if I can stay with official software, the better.......
-
Mandriva 4.3.5 packages for 2010.0 are currently in the /testing repo and should be available as official updates soon.
Nicely spotted!
Interesting. I may wait and see. Or is there some way I can find out how the testing is going or a possible ETA?
-
From what I can understand, we have been left with KDE4.3.2 in the official repos as Mandriva work on the new KDE4.4 for 2010.1.
This hasn't stopped MIB from creating packages. Discussion has occurred on official Mandriva forum Click Here
The link to the MIB instructions for installing KDE4.3.5 is HERE
I myself are considering upgrading, as my KDE4.3.2 isn't quite as stable as my KDE4.2.4 on 2009 was.
Security concerns using the MIB repos should be minimal I expect. Can anyone please confirm this for me?
-
Check my threads, where I partitioned and done a network install to my Acer aspire one:
This should help somewhat.
-
I could be wrong, but I think I used XFdrake from the cli to configure cards in the past
-
I'm not fantastic at this sort of thing, but post the output of 'mount' in a terminal. This should give the guys here a bit of an idea what's going on.
-
I've been unlucky enough to loose a few drives. Once I lost the mbr and couldn't boot. I used a live dvd to get the data off that drive. I had a drive fail in my XBOX-Based on pc components, and I've had sectors go bad in another.
I should also state that I don't erase pictures off the memory card in my camera. When it's full I just replace it. A current memory card holds over 1000 pictures, but costs the same as a roll of conventional film, so I think it's money well spent to simply use a new card.
So when I set out to build my current desktop in 2008 data security was on top of my priorities. I had been using an external usb drive to do regular backups, and burn critical files to a dvd that is stored at another location in case my desktop and usb drive are completely destroyed.
Now I have one drive that I use for my OS, and another two in a mirrored raid array purely for data. I still do regular backups to an external drive, and do the occasional DVD backup and store at another location.
Loosing any of my financial/study data would be horrific, but loosing pictures etc. is simply not an option.

I am located in Australia and often have trouble connecting to the mirror list. I just leave it and try again the next day, that usually fixes the issue.
-
Yes it is a bug. Here is the link: Kernel update cause grub change disk device in menu.lst
By the looks no real intention of correcting it any time soon.
Simple answer is to ensure that the boot device is /dev/sda.
Mine isn't /dev/sda, mine is /dev/sdc, as sda and sdb are a raid data storage array. This is run through the intel onboard raid, and I'm not risking swapping drives to correct this. I will have to manually edit menu/lst by the looks. Strange as I didn't have this issue with 2009, but the bug is from back then.
-
I've seen a couple of recent reports of a kernel update messing up GRUB. Likely a bug somewhere.
Ok, thanks David. Seems strange that it tries to change the hard disk it boots off ie. hd(0,5) versus hd(1,5)
Makes sense that it's likely a bug.

It's a bit of a scary thought that we can open our pc to anyone by this method. It's something that is often overlooked int the promotion of linux, as we are often told how secure linux is.
I've generally stayed away from installing software not from the official repos. Even in windows I used to avoid adding software unless neccessary. It slows things down and has the potential to reduce the strength of security.
About the only non-official stuff I've installed was the updates to KDE from the KDE repos. Given how stable KDE is now (not one crash with 2010 yet!) I may not even go down the path of adding unofficial packages at.

Ah, good! I am considering the update myself. KDE.org do recommend this as a necessary update.
