  1. Hi, I'm no expert with linux but i had a similar experience today, took minutes to load xwindows (i actually hung my washing up one time lol), I worked out it was due to my 3d destop effects (i was playing around with them). I turned them off, and what do you know, my computer loads xwindows fine. Just a thought
  2. Hi all, I've got an installation of 2008 i586.dvd free running ok. I thought I'd try my hand at configuring the kernel. Got some info of the net, perhaps to outdated! First issue is my installation didn't install the kernel source, I checked in install software but can't find anything to install the source. I have got a copy of kernel 2.6.23.8 off magazine cover disk, but have just learnt about the grsecurity patch, so i want to stick with the original kernel if its already patched (any one know?). Second thing I tried make xconfig to configure the kernel, and xconfig isnt installed either. Does mandriva 2008 have a newer program for configuration, or do I have to install it off the disk, or download of net? Thanks guys
  3. Is it possible to update mandriva using my windows connection? I assume it would be, but alot more involved?
  4. Definately keep digging, I am interested to see how it works out.
  5. Hi, Are you using a download controller, as in one that allows files transfers to be stopped and started with out any faults occuring? Sometimes if you use the download section of your browser it can do what you have mentioned. In windows I used to use leechget ( i think thats how its spelt) Im not sure what program you can use if your using Linux already, I think linux browsers offer a good download controller anyway. If you still have trouble someone local to you maybe kind enough to post you a copy anyways, I had the very nice Aussiejohn send me my copy of 2008. Im in Australia obviously.
  6. Perhaps I should clarify myself a little. It is a business where staff are charged out at an hourly rate. Im really looking for an invoice, point of sale, and inventory program. Nothing super flash, but just to get the job done.
  7. Thanks for your input. Serial modems dont appear to be all that common either now (or I'm looking in the wrong places). Am I right to assume that an USB modem would be suitable, ie. Hardware type? Or am I going to have problems with a USB modem too?
  8. Hello everyone, I am seeking people opinions on what program to use for a business. The business is primarily a service provider, where the inventory is very little. I have been looking around the net, the banana pos program looks like a posibility. I am open to other suggestions. Thanks for your input
  9. Thanks guys. I appreciate your input. Are all serial modems "Hardware modems?"
  10. After my mix up getting a new modem, I had waited enough...I wanted 2008 running now. I disconnected my primary hard drive (my windows partition and my data partition) , and booted a live cd PClinuxos, used diskdrake to clean up the secondary hard drive (old win 98 install along with 2 installs of mandrake 9.0 -not sure what happend there). After diskdrake i had a clean secondary hard drive. Shut down computer, reconnected primary drive, and booted into the 2008 install disk, installed 2008 to secondary hard drive. All my components were recognised (except for my softmodem which I was expecting, but PClinuxos picks it up!) onboard graphics drivers installed fine (am yet to try compiz). Is able to read my XP partition fine. Haven't used it much yet, but Mandrake 9.0 was very good to me and I can't see why 2008 wont be better, given its flawless and simple installation. I never had the old Mandrake 9.0 updated, but I cant wait to get 2008 fully upto date.
  11. My mother board is has PCI2.2 slots. My current modem is a software type (only using windows at moment). So I'm getting all ready to run Mandriva 2008, I've added more ram and ordered a hardware type modem (its description is type pci so im assuming it will fit my mother board). I get the modem today, its with out any liturature, and unbranded so I google the numbers on the chip: conexant RS56-PCI R6793-12. It seems this is not a hardware type but soft ware....I am furious as I specifically asked for a hardware type for linux (reply- its a hardware type, not the software type). Is it possible that the chipset could be used in a hardware type as well? Im not a computer engineer, but I highly doubt it. Looking through the forums here it sounds like it is alot of messing around to get this modem to work under linux, and could easily be avoided by simply buying a hardware type modem (but then will I end up where I am now? AAAARGGGH!) Any help is most appreciated.
  12. Thanks Scoonma. From what I can gather, and what Adamw said, I think 2008 will install fine, from around kernel 2.6.14 or so the savage driver was added, so I shouldn't have to mess around too much. I'm hoping I can dedicate around 250mb of ram to the onboard graphics, and leave 1mb for the cpu, and hopefully this will be enough. Not sure if this will get Compiz going or not. Fingers crossed.
  13. Can anyone advise me whether the onboard video card on my mother board (MSI KM2M Combo L) is hardware or software accelerated? Im not sure where to look to find this out. I assume its the same as with modems, where a hardware modem works under linux but a software wont. Are most onboard video cards hardware or software accelerated?
  14. Thanks Adam. Do you know if that has 3D support? How can I find that out?
  15. Ive been reading about the savage video driver. I think this is what i need. does anyone know if this is installed with 2008? Should I just begin install and see where it leads me?
  16. Hello All. Im about to dual boot my Xp machine with 2008 (install to be on second drive). I used to run mandrake 9.0 no hastles (hard drive crashed and I never reinstalled). I've tried looking everywhere to see if I can get full support for the onboard graphics (processor is the ProSavage8 3D). The Via website has its own kernels for some versions of mandrake (such as pre 2006, 2007 etc.) There is no mention of 2008. Is it likely I could have full support out of the box with 2008? South bridge chip is VIA VT8235.
  17. I can ftp the newer kernel to my hard drive. Can I then using the install cd to boot to enter failsafe or a repair mode, can i then install the kernel from there? Cheers for the help
  18. I've done some more research :) I've found that the later xbox kernels will run my xbox. I've never gone past being a noob user with mandrake/mandriva (had mandrake 9.0 on pc until HD crashed...got a copy of 08 (Thanks Aussie John) waiting for more RAM before i install 08 though). I've searched but had no luck on how to incorporate the newer updated kernel into the install. Is this even possible? If so can someone point me in the right direction or even to the relevant topic? Thanks all.

    Video Cards

Ok thanks for that. My mother board doesnt support ddr2 or ddr3 (yes its getting long in the tooth) will there be issues if the video card is ddr2?

    Video Cards

Thanks, thats what I was guessing was meant about the drivers. Should I be focussing on the memery size of the card as well? I am so out of touch these days Thanks

    Video Cards

Hello people, The last time I bought a video card was for a 486! My current AMD has only ever used the on board video. I am wanting to run (when i install 2008 in very near future) the Compiz 3d desk top running aswell. I am seeking advice on what I should be looking for in a video card. My board can take a agp 4x card. Thanks
  24. Thats a good idea thanks. You dont happen to know any retailers in Australia do you?
  25. I'd like to try 2005LE, but I only have dial up so would take for ever. If anyone has a copy of 2005LE I'd appreciate a copy of it.
