  1. Thanks I will try tonight your suggestion. I did not run vmware-config.pl, just vmware-install.pl as outlined in http://www.howtoforge.com/vmware_server_mandriva_free2007 for Mandriva 2007.1 the button was there, but for 2008.0 it was not as it wasnot for 2006. the above site explains for 2006 that the button has to be added via the main menu that I cannot access. So Do I understand ti right as normal user I am not supposed to change the appearance of the applications? But as root I did not figure out either how to change it for all users not just for root. Thanks already for your help! Pelusa
  2. Hm it looks no one has the same problem? It seems that only if I login as root I can change the menu but then loging back in as normal user the enu still doe snot appear. is there a way to let normal users have access to the main menu editor? Hope some one has a solution thanks Pelusa
  3. Sorry I forgot to tell you I am using the gnome desktop. the k seems a kde thing? Anyways Thanks for the suggestion I will try it tomorrow when I am sitting on the machine. Thomas
  4. Hi, I already googled and search the forums archive but could not find anything. Kind of weird as I thought this must have happed to anyone else as well. Anyway if I am just too silly to find the source, I apologize for to ask again ... OK the problem is I installed vmware and there is no icon in the main menu. OK no problem I can make one with system > preferences > main menu. Just nothing comes up ..... I see the info in the task bar "starting main menu" but this disappears after a few seconds and thats it. Then I logged in as root and did the same thing, and voila, I have the editor. But logging in as normal user again, the changes are not there (clearly ;-) ) is there a way to get the main menu editor to show up for normal users? Thanks Thomas [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  5. I only had the boot/system partition with 8GB, and then one huge partition with ~450GB .... I know now after reading lots of threads regarding this issue this is not the way to go. OK I found now gparted and resized/moved my partitions to: boot/system (8GB) is still first (can I move it so that I would have free space for the windows partition at the beginning? -- probably don't have to using supergrub?) then 40GB (NTFS no yet installed windows) -- 4GB swap -- 250GB (ext3) -- rest ~170GB ext3 ... this is the current state. I am planing to install windows and then use supergrub (do you have a nice howto? their site is a bit low with information at least for me and their mailing list is spanish .... unfortunately i cannot read/speek spanish) to get grub/lilo back with the windows boot option as well Is this the way to go or do you a have better suggestion? This way I just figured out via googling a lot and could have some glitches i do not see right now. Thanks Pelusa
  6. Hi, after searching a bit more it seems like super grub disk is my friend? Could anyone help me in howto proceed or point me to a tutorial to install windows after Mandriva? I could not find any up to now Thanks Thomas
  7. Hm, this means I have to uninstall mandriva 2007 again, as I did not leave a spare partition, and neither would it have been the first on the drive. I only have an external USB hard drive, unfortunately not a second drive in the desktop. From your post it seems that there is no way to install Windows now after the Mandriva install with y hardware currently available. Thanks Pelusa
  8. Hi, after a final successful installation of Mandriva and VMware, I figured that i cannot see my PCI card in the virtual machine. This would only a temporary thing as I have to write some software that is only available for windows from the supplier. So in order to start right away I wanted to use Windows until my software does the job. Hm too bad that VMware cannot connect to the PCI card. I now understand that this is because the VM is basically another computer and the PCI card not plugged in there. OK What about a dual boot? After googleing I see everybody suggests to first install windows and then Mandriva as Windows is too silly to understand there is another OS around. This is not good as i really don't feel like begin from scratch, and what about in a month, when I don't use Windows any more? I do have an external hard disc that I could use for the windows partition. Would this be possible to use, when I change the boot sequence in the BIOS to boot first from this hard drive? How would I start doing this installation? thanks Thomas
  9. Thank you so much! i see something. I unchecked "enable translucency (composite extension)" and finally I have my display back. The only thing right now is that in System->Administration->Ati Control Panel, it sais that driver does not provide the FireGL X11 extensions .... Oh well i will google for this issue further. thanks Thomas
  10. Hi, please help, I installed 2007.1 and everything is fine. Then I wanted to add 3d desktop effects, and after a reboot i completely lost my graphical interface. I installed dkms-ati (I am using the ATI radeon X1950 card), installed ati and the kernel source, right now still 2.6.17-13. I also tried to follow the errata 9.1 on 2007.1, but even if I boot into 2.6.17-13 I have the display is so bad i cannot read anything. i therefore cannot go into the control center to reconfigure the graphics card. Before this happened, after I played with the 3D desktop interface, I lost the panels of my windows ... I found in this thread the help: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=40799 After that (at least I think it was after that .... uninstalling task-3ddesktop via urpme did not help) I completely lost the graphical interface not just the panels. Booting in safe mode I can see in /etc/X11/xorg.conf that fglrx is the driver that is installed. Trying to change that to vesa did not help either./ Please don't tell me I have to reinstall everything again. Is there a way to configure the graphics card vis the command line? AAAhhhhhhhh Thomas
  11. Tanks for the reply, I uninstalled vmware and reinstalled the new kernel-source with "software install & remove" in application, and then it worked like a charme. However as I cannot get labview with all drivers to run under 2008 I will go back to 2007 spring and see if I can get labview to run there (any recommendations whether 2007.0 or 2007.1 ? ). Unfortunately, I cannot go back to 2006 (the version I know that labview ad all drivers will run) as the Intel board (DQ965GF) I am using does is not supported by 2006 ... it won't recognize the cdrom drive (actually cd/dvd drive) when I try to install it. strangely enough the screen before this error message says it will now install Mandriva 2006, which means it reads from the CD .... The quick start kit, provided from Intel, that should work with Mandriva 2006 does not work (according to one webpage, according to another intel webpage it should not work ... well bad luck I guess .. it does not work), as it requires an installed OS .... Thanks and cross you fingers for me that 2007 lets me install labview with all necessary drivers (otherwise I am screwed) ... Cheers Thomas
  12. Hm OK, after a restart I saw that it must have updated the kernel to the latest 2.6.22-12 (at least uname -r changed from 9 to 12) and now I have to recompile the kernel again. How would I do that and can I just uninstall vmware as suggested by the perfect setup? I cannot install labview either for this reason now. This might have prevented the main menu from opening? How can I safely update the kernel and then tell it not to automatically update every single new kernel version? thanks again Thomas
  13. Hi, I was installing Mandriva 2008 according to the perfect set-up of Falko Timme. It went great until I came to vmware. when it asked me What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include] I gave it the entry /lib/modules/2.6.22.9-desktop-1mdv/build/include which I verified with uname -r OK then i got the error message "... The directory of kernel headers (version 2.6.22.9-1mdvcustom) does not match your running kernel (version 2.6.22.9-desktop-1mdv) ...." I went into /usr/src/linux/Makefile and changed the EXTRAVERSION entrance from 9-1mdvcustom to 9-desktop-1mdv and recompiled the kernel with make in this directory. I could install vmware without a problem. The only thing is, which is also indicated in "The perfect Setup" no application entrance has been created. i have to do it manually. But when I right click on application to edit menu, i see the main menu wants to start but after a few seconds it goes away and no main menu appears. How can i get the main menu to work? has it to do that I changed the "custom" to recompile the kernel source? Hope you can help Thanks a lot Thomas
  14. yeah thats what I am planing to do. I know now that labview causes these dumps, its weird as the program is still running and collecting data as it is supposed to. Also, labview calls via system calls c-programs which run as supposed, meaning no seg faults are at least obvious. Well I will dig deeper in order to get to the root. Thanks for your help pelusa
  15. thanks a lot speedball2. Now i know which application caused it. This helps a lot. But why do I get core dumps, if ulimit -c is 0? Pelusa
  16. Hi, I have a weird behavior just within the last hours. I will get core dums written on my external hard drive occasionally between 3 to 10 times an hour each 100MB large. Checking ulimit -a as user as well as root gives: [user@####### ~]$ ulimit -a core file size (blocks, -c) 0 data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited file size (blocks, -f) unlimited max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 32 max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited open files (-n) 1024 pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 8 stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192 cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited max user processes (-u) 4024 virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited [root@###### user]# ulimit -a core file size (blocks, -c) 0 data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited file size (blocks, -f) unlimited max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 32 max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited open files (-n) 1024 pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 8 stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192 cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited max user processes (-u) 4024 virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited [root@##### user]# I am using Mandriva 2006. I cannot upgrade as this is the only distro which runs Labview 8.2 with all its drivers without problems. Hope someone can help me with this problem, as I do not want to stay up and always delete all these core files. I don't know what to do with them anyway (I am not really familiar with linux just apply it) Thanks Pelusa [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  17. Hi, I am currently building a measurement computer which has to run labview, as well as host a very fast counting card (FastComtec P7888). As it has to run labview, the only free linux OS is Mandriva 2006. Unfortunately Mandriva 2007 gives problems while installing and looking at NI webpage, it seems like Mandriva 2006 is the way to go. Now, the counting card needs fast response from the motherboard and the processor. OK lets get really good ones .... hm Intels D975 motherboard does not support Linux/Mandriva (yet). Or in other words, Mandriva does not yet support the chipset used by those boards .... In addition I cannot use the E6850 processor or even the quad core QX6850. I guess I have to go with the DQ965 and the E6700 processor (any experience with 2006?): http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/...b/CS-008326.htm What is the fastest motherboard/processor combination that you have heard of running Mandriva 2006 (2.6.12-31)? Please note, I have to go with a clone computer as the counting card has restrictions on the PCI port, such as supporting two IO address ranges, DMA transfer .... and others. So no HP, dell, or other "main" supplier can be used. Only Intel, Asus or supermicro. By the way while installing labview 8.2 on Mandriva 2006, I have to rebuild the kernel and change following : from http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?boar...=509336#M274354 " By looking in the file /tmp/niSystemReport.out.gz, we were able to find more information regarding why the install was failing. NIKAL is a kernel module, and it was complaining about version magic numbers disagreeing between itself and our installed kernel source in the line: Sep 26 12:11:01 ctl2121 kernel: nikal: version magic '2.6.12-31mdkcustom 686 gcc-4.0' should be '2.6.12-31mdk 686 gcc-4.0' So after searching around a bit, I found that the kernel source we had installed was set to this 31mdkcustom, whereas nikal was expecting 31mdk. So we went to the Makefile for our kernel source found in /usr/src/linux, and edited the fourth line from EXTRAVERSION = -31mdkcustom to EXTRAVERSION = -31mdk Then, we recompiled the kernel source, by running make in this directory, then retried installing nikal with no problems, as the version magic numbers were identical. I'm not sure why the version was set to custom in the default install of the kernel source for 2.6.12-31, and my only worry is that it might cause problems if we try to install other kernel modules that expect the custom version magic number, but my guess is that it won't. What kind of weird kernel module *wants* to have a custom version magic in the kernel? None, I imagine. " Does this change any harm to anything else? Thanks a lot for helping me with these problems Pelusa
  18. Hi Scarecrow, OK thanks. I will use --nodeps and do it. Pelusa
  19. Hi Tyme, thanks for the fast response Do you have a gphoto2 rpm for Mandriva 2006 of the newer version (2.4.0)? -- No the 2.1.6 version is the last Or are you compiling from source (tar.gz)? -- Yes I have to Note that compiling from source can get pretty complex, you'll probably need a lot of *-devel packages. As far as removing the current gphoto2, I would do man urpme and look for an option to not check dependencies (may be --no-deps or similar), that way you can remove gphoto2 without removing all those other packages (as far as I can see, none of them absolutely require gphoto2). -- Luckily gphoto2 does not depend on anything, its just its library, libgphoto2. Perhaps I can just leave it and install the new version of the library as well as the new version of gphoto2? Pelusa
  20. Hi, i am failry new to Mandriva and have a question related to an update. First yes I know there is newer Mandriva around. However, mandriva 2006 is the only free distribution, which supports all labview issues i have to deal with. Now I woudl like to use gphoto2 as well on this machine. I noticed that the latest version from a rpm source is gphoto2 2.1.6. there exists gphoto2 2.4.0 since July 2007 which I would like to use. OK I thought I wojudl just urpme gphoto2, urpme libgphoto2 and install the tar balls. However after typing urpme libgphoto2, I got following meassage: [localhost]# urpme libgphoto2 To satisfy dependencies, the following 9 packages will be removed (16 MB): drakconf-10.3-5mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied harddrake-ui > 10-12mdk) drakfirsttime-1.3-1mdk.noarch (due to unsatisfied hwdb-clients >= 0.15.1-1mdk) harddrake-10.3-0.64.3.20060mdk.i586 (due to missing hwdb-clients) harddrake-ui-10.3-0.64.3.20060mdk.i586 (due to missing sane-backends) hwdb-clients-0.18-1mdk.noarch (due to missing sane-backends) libgphoto2-2.1.6-8.3.20060mdk.i586 libsane1-1.0.16-5mdk.i586 (due to missing libgphoto2_port.so.0, due to missing libgphoto2.so.2) mdkonline-1.3-6.2.20060mdk.noarch (due to unsatisfied hwdb-clients >= 0.15.1-1mdk) sane-backends-1.0.16-5mdk.i586 (due to missing libgphoto2_port.so.0, due to missing libgphoto2.so.2, due to missing libsane.so.1) Is this OK? (y/N) n [localhost]# I was not sure whether I should allow to delete these dependencies as i do nto know for what they are used. thats why I am asking here. is there anything important, which i should not delete? Thanks a lot Pelusa
