    As for dmesg, i can't log into root. Also, i dont know where to put acpi=off into menu.lst.

  4. First,

    Secondly, in var/log/messages there are two instances where

    Pops up 9 times, when LNKA changes to LNKB, LNKC, LNKD, LNKE, LNKF, LNKG, LNKH and LNKU.

     

    Thirdly, the only things connected to my laptp when its turned on are the power cable and the mouse (the touchpad stopped working)

  5. I feel like i'm somewhat getting the short end of the stick as far as problem-free mandriva computing goes these days, but anyway:

     

    Trying to dual boot XP and Linux, i re-installed mandriva 2008 from a dvd and saved half of my 110GB hard drive for windows. After formatting each partition for its particular use i installed mandriva and then proceeded to install XP into the partition using its installer menu. The partition is recognised but when i tell it to install there it says that partition cant be used because it's not in the windows format.

     

    I thought the windows format was either FAT32 or NTFS, but neither of these works at all. I'm going to try some more but if anyone knows what's really going on it'd be great if you could show me what to do. Perhaps then i'll have no need to plague the forums with endless questions to obscure problems that shouldnt even be there :huh:

  6. The way to do this, i found, is you have to go to the mandriva control center, click on manage software, expand the Development menu, click on kernel, scroll down till you find kernel-source-(something).mdv and install it. I had the same problem but thats what i did and everything works.

     

    Failing that, though, www.rpmseek.com will let you search for a madwifi RPM, which is a heck of alot easier :]

  7. If you don't have a laptop (where you are doomed using the embedded VGA): Have you considered swapping the ATi VGA with an Nvidia one?

    So far, not one person who attempted this has regretted it! The proprietary nvidia driver works just great, and offers native composite support. Under windows there may be fierce competition, but under Linux the ATi coffin is firmly nailed.

     

    I have a laptop, does this mean the embedded VGA is all i have?

  8. Ok, where do i find that? I've looked everywhere for it and no-one has it. The urpmi isn't an option because there's no access to the internet for my laptop.

     

    (edit): I managed to find the fglrx driver, installed it and tried the cedega system tests again. It failed the openGL rendering and the 3D acceleration. Grr...
