  1. I got a dual boot system with windows 2000 and MDK 10.0.

Everytime I start in Mandrake, MDK changes my BIOS time and system time. I dont connect to the internet within Linux so I know there is not a GMT problem. I still have try it to enable it (NTP UTC) just to see if the problem got fixed.

I havent got any luck eiather with that enable or disable. I keep getting to drakclock and change it each session. This has gotten a little stressing since well I usually switch a lot between OS.

Can anyone tell me what to do to correct this. I have a laptop inspiron 4000 P3 at 1Ghz.

  2. So I will need to learn something about linking to fully understand the difference. I understand that binary in this case is more like encript than actually building an executable.

The question about this would be more like:

ok but I made a binary AND I make it executable (through chmod +x) so why it didnt execute. Did bash didnt interpretate the .bin files (since I have executed bin files before).

  3. i think that was not a trick. you just compiled your binary into an intermediary  file and not an executable file. can you try doing it this way:

Ok It worked now I wanted to know, why, what happened, why it didnt let me as a binary. Any problems being a binary? what exactly is an intermediary file?

  4. Hi I start taking a C class on-line, I will do it on gcc, and I kinda fell behind the "hello world" because gcc played me a not that cute trick.

    $gcc -c hellow_world.c

    $ls hello_world*

    hello_world.c

    hello_world.o

    $chmod +x hello_world.o

    $./hello_world.c

    BASH: Unable to execute bynary

looking around the net I found this:

On a redhat system the script to enable/disable

    binfmt_misc is /etc/rc.d/init.d/ia64fmt.

You should try executing this script manually as root and see

    what happens.

I went to that address and found nothing, well I did, but didnt found that script. Any way I can get BASH to recognize and execute .o?

  5. assuming it worked under 10.0, please give us more info. e.g. your network settings, yout ifconfig-eth0 file, the output of ifconfig in console, etc....

    :)

Well I never really had any problem before with any Linux distro before thats why I dont bother. Now this is not a server is my laptop for personal use. And I just want to be savvy about it going wtith the latest and greatest.

AFAIK this network card usually went just by using the pcnet_cs module, and it worked pretty good. Now Mandrke DOES detect and get the model of my card (under Hardrake for example). The issue comes with binding the eth0. Pcmcia deamons runs kind of ok.

But the binding with eth0 comes as a failure. I am currently on my other OS but I will post that info ASAP I jump back to MDK (dual boot here)

  6. I got a D-Link DFE-690TXD card. I am on a DELL Inspiron 4800 and a Mandrake 10.1rc.

    DFE-690TXD_main.gifmy card

Mandrake fails creating binding with the eth0 interface. The network card is recognized but it doesnt connect. I wonder what I need to add to get in the network. It might have been some initialization issues (no LDAP, or Kerberos on my network).

I put localfiles when installing the distro, I wonder if thts the reason why no binding with eth0 is happening.

    Any help please.

  7. Hi I just intalled mandrake 10.1 and well basically got two major problems. I cant get PCMCIA to start or more properly I cant get eth0 binding so I can not get on th einternet.

The other problem is I cant get a tap-click on the laptop mouse touchpad. I already got a tip from the people here but I cant get the module without having my lap online

So I think the module is pcnet_cs, cardmgr got problems also running.

    What am I using?

    DELL Inspiron 5000 Laptop

    Mandrake 10.1rc

    D-Link PCMCIA CardBus

  8. Hi I install xfce4 on my desktop, so I want to modify the menu that I have at the start of mandrake. Unfortunately I dont know how to know if what I am using is GDM, XDM, KDM or any other.

I do know that I cant get into xfce from the graphical login so I used the console. However, I want to be able to get xfce4 on the menu and also know which graphical login manager I used.

    - How do I find out which graphical login manager I am using?

    - How can I edit it so I ad the option of xfce4?

    -- Pointers --

The graphical login manager looks like a window with NO taskbar, it says Mandrake Linux and after you select the user you are transfered to a different screen which ask you for your password and have a list block with the available window managers/ desktop enviroments.

    any Ideas which might be?

  9. Well I dont know why I put gear, but it sounded good. Anyway, a friend from my LUG posted a question about switching mouse on his mandrake 9.1, he went from USB to a PS2 oldie, because he pulverize the previous one. Anyway, Mandrake is complaining, and he dont know how to quickly make mandrake happy.

I suggest him to check the control center but I am not sure what would be the next steps. Specially since it involves also Port issues (USB hotplug to PS2).

  10. Hi I just heard of a vulnerability with OpenSSL, and I also found this note for my version however I dunno how to apply the patch. Any help on that.

    Mandrake Linux 9.1:

    42365cfe8a9214a747bd1fa6329baec8 9.1/RPMS/libopenssl0-0.9.6i-1.2.91mdk.i586.rpm

is it an urpmi update. For some reason on my rpm management no update is taken place. So I wonder what can I do to update it.

  11. Hi I have MDK in 9.1. I just found my sister has been doing her spanish homework bearing the pains of having just one keyboard layout and looking for 'special characters' each time she got to put a latin character. I would need to intall the LatinAmerican layout so she can have access to those characters, but also I want to know how can she quickly switch layouts between one style and the other on the fly.

Any suggestion, any application available, is there an taskbar applet to do that? I am using Gnome 2.2

  12. Hi I have an LG CD writter however I have multiple problems. Not only a CD-writter but also a CD-ROM make mandrake to crash... meaning a Kernel Panic. Just because it detected the device cause the KP.

I want to know how to accurately set it up, is there a problem with the fstab or is the device just wont run.

Finally when I set it up correctly, how can I set it up to burn. I run Gnome and I got some Burning software.

    G-Combust

    and CD-Toaster

    Update.. the model is HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8160B

  13. Hi I got an error on my mandrake, for some reason several applkicacions wont find the libgdk-1.2.so.0 which is one library used for the UI of many of the Gnome apps. For that I cant really run many applications including LinuxConf, XMMS, some screensavers, Andula, and others.

Can anyone help me, I DO have that library under /usr/lib/

  14. Hi since I change my conection from DHCP to regular hostname, ip, gateway.... I have had some problems. I used the connectDrake GUI wizard. I put a localhost.localdomain name, next time I try to start with GNOME a message telling me that I should edit the /etc/hosts

So far so good, I did that however several things have just not being working right. First of all is my printer, no errors, just simply process the job and then aborts. Even cops have trouble redirecting me to the WWW admin tool.

Later my XMMS / LinuxConf / Others dont start saying that they cant find the libgtk+1.2.so.0 library. Which is in /usr/lib/ folder. So as you can see I have plenty of things to re-set up.. I wonder if someone have any experience on this type of things.

I tried tlooking for previous questions since it seems such a simple and usual thing (to change hostanems) but for some reason I couldnt find anything at least in this chat.

  15. I got a problem setting up my printer. I run the PrintDrake with much success the first time, it went so smooth I really have no I dea if it REALLY worked. Now I try to run PrintDrake again and it exits abnormally.

I want to know how can I set it up from the command line, or check the right log for this to know what happened.

Another thing is I want to know if I should worry about since it detect it the first time.

The printer is an HP OfficeJet v40 through USB and with Scanning and Faxing capabilities. I am running Mandrake 9.1 on a PIII 19? RAM. I already download PDD, hjis and hojs from linuxprinting.org

Any further suggesting, BTW I dunno cups and might sound very newbie but I dunno what path to put on location of the printer.

Update: I went to the Linuxconf and it couldnt detect the /usr/sbin/lpd how can I fix that? I did found it on the /var/spool/lpd but it gave me several errors about could not read some files.

  16. Hi, well the tutorial was great, no problems there.

I did however run into some trouble installing gaim, it told me there was a conflict with the libgaim-remote that I installed on my previous attemp, luckly I just went to the history site where I got it form and did a simple rpm -e <package> and re-installed everything.

One question though, when I am going to install, urpmi (or startext) tell me its a bad file so I wonder if its just because it doesnt check the integrity.

Well anyway it worked find at the end. Thanks a lot, I learned how to use a really powerful tool.

  17. Hi I have been triying to get the latest gaim (6.0) with no luck. Can anyone help me giving me some tips.

Basically is the ever so persistent dependenci problem, this time it was perl which I installed a perl-base X.8.1 (I think?) which was on the mandrake dependency for gaim 6.0. however when I install it, it told me that it needed an older perl.

So I download that version it asked me to (X.8.0) however, to my surprise I already had it. So I end up in a problem where I had the older perl but the newer didnt recognize it. So forget about GAIM.

I end up downloading the rpm from the Mandrake 9.1 CD and keep using my old GAIM 5.8.

I hope someone might give me a hint. BTW I was downloading packages from Mandrake Cooker.

    PIII 192RAM 60GB Mandrake 9.1
