  1. Hi,

I just started getting into K3B. Whenever I launch it I get K3B gives me a warning message that I should really be running as root. Is there a way to config things so that if I start this application it prompts me for the root password as runs as if I am su? Kinda like the software management program does.

    Thanks

  2. It appears that the search function in PRMDrake does not work.

If I hit the search button nothing happens.

I have tried all the search options: in names, in descriptions, in flle names.

I have tried known package names and wildcards.

    Any recommendations?

I am running Spring '07 KDE.

  3. As I indicated in my earlier post, you want the KDE Control Centre NOT the Mandriva Control Centre. KDE Control Centre is where you set KDE user preferences. It's worthwhile taking a look at the many options that it offers.

Thanks, it finally sunk in. Sorry if I was being thick headed. I need to get use to this multiple control center thing.

  4. Daniel gave you the easiest method of all and you ignored it. :D :D :D

I just did it myself just to prove it.

    Cheers. John

I didn't understand the method. Did you mean going into the Mandriva Linux Control Center and selecting

Menu Style Configuration. This gives me 3 options:

    Original Menu

    Discovery Menu

    Mandriva Menu

I tried all 3 and none yielded my desired result. The only thing that changed was the menu nesting.

  5. Do not try alsaconfig now but alsamixer (I guess the system is simply muted), adjust the sound settings and then

    aslactl store

If you wonder that a command is not found then check if it exists at all. Type the first letter(s) of the command in question in the terminal (e.g. alsa), then hit the tab key twice. The terminal will list then all commands that begin with e.g. alsa. ;)

Success?? I started alsamixer from thee terminal window and read its wikipedia page to figure out what I am doing.

the item labeled PCM was muted so I turned uo the volume on that and sound returns.

I also figured out that "alsactl store" only works if you are su.

    Thanks !!

  6. What alsa packages do you have installed?

rpm -qa | grep -i alsa

as we can then identify why alsaconf didn't work.

    [jose@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep -i alsa

    libalsa2-1.0.14-2.rc3.2mdv2007.1

    alsa-utils-1.0.14-1.rc2.1mdv2007.1

    libalsa-data-1.0.14-2.rc3.2mdv2007.1

    libalsa-oss0-1.0.12-1mdv2007.0

    [jose@localhost ~]$ su

    Password:

    [root@localhost jose]# uname -r

    2.6.17-13mdvlegacy

    [root@localhost jose]#

Here is a theory. I think I may have downloaded the wrong kernel source files. I say this because shortly after I got the new updates available for your system message. I have been accepting all updates. Then my boot menu was expanded to include 2 new entries:

    linux-legacy (/boot/vmlinuz-legacy)

    legacy 2.6.17-14 (/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-14mdvlegacy)

I have no clue why these appeared or what they are for. But perhaps they messed up the installed packages.

    Thanks for the help.

  7. I installed Mandriva 3 days ago.

Sound was fine but it suddenly stopped.

I searched around the forum for related threads but found no solution.

One thread said to run lspci and post output.

    Here it is:

00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60)

Another thread said to run alsaconfig as root from terminal window.

I tried that and got command not found.

    Please Help

  8. Assuming your desktop is KDE, right-click on the desktop and follow Create New ...-> File... -> Link to Application. In the General tab, give the shortcut a name. Next open the tab Application, and cut and paste the magic spinynorman's command in the line that says "Command". Click Ok, and the link/shortcut must appear on the Desktop.

    THANKS ALOT

    :thanks:

  9. OK, so I found my way to the KDE Menu Editor.

I see that all items in the menu have both a "Name" and "Description"

The interesting thing is that in the KDE Menut Editor itself all the itema are

listed as "Description (Name)" which is the way I want my menu's to look.

But as I originally stated, the actual menus are just "Description".

I do not see any selection in the KDE Menu Editor that wiill change the

actual menus from just "Description" to "Description (Name)".

    What am I missing? :huh::huh:

  10. So I went the GUI path and followed the instructions with no difficulty. Then I opened Konqueror and sure enough I could find a folder icon pointing to my A drive. However, the folder icon also has a lock icon on it and when I try to open the folder I get a "You do not have enough permissions to read". How do I change the permissions? When I check the permissions tab under the folder properties it says that root is the owner and only root can change the permissions.

    Thanks for the help.

  11. I just installed Spring '07 on the 2nd hard drive of a PC that also runs XP off the 1st hard drive.

Durng install Mandriva correctly found the XP install and added it to the boot menu.

However, when I open Konqueror and navigate to System -> Storage Media

I do not see the WinXP hard drive.

I thought Linux could read NTFS hard drives. How do I configure Mandriva to read

    the 1st hard drive?

    Thanks,

  12. Hi All,

I am new to Linux and Madriva. So far I am very happy with Mandriva but I have a KDE configuration question.

Is there a way to configure the menus so that the name of the software application appears?

    For example, instead of

Mandriva -> Multimedia -> Audio Player

    I would prefer to see

Mandriva -> Multimedia -> Audio Player (Amarok)

I've seen the later on a Linspire Live CD

    Thanks

  13. Hi All,

I just installed Spring '07 on the 2nd hard drive of a PC that also runs XP off the 1st hard drive.

The GRUB menu.lst defaults to booting linux. But I want to change it to default to booting XP.

From another page I see that all I need to do is change the entry value associated with default

    in the menu.lst file.

My question is how do I get permission to edit menu.lst? I have been navigating to it with Konqueror and

then opening it with KWrite. But I cannot save it.

    Please help,

    Jose
