  1. Didn even realise I wasn't addressing 2 meg until I read this board, but fixed it easily thanks to info here. Is there any point in installing a 64-bit version? I think my old P3 866 is technically a 64 bit but only has 256M of RAM and is running 2007 Spring Free. My other machine is a core 2 duo 4300 1.8Mhz with 2Gb running 2008 Free, joined by a wired LAN and switch box. Any advice (including where to get the 64-bit version)?

  2. A couple of weeks ago, the printer started churning out garbage. Since then I can't get it to print from 2008. I have tried to reinstall both CUPS and HPLIJS. I received essentially the same message from both, i.e. "Cannot install...." Same happens from Control Panel and Configure. On trying to reinstall from Update, I got the message that some dependencies were unsatisfied, but the files named were not listed anywhere I could find.

Reinstalling the system does not work.

The printer itself (HP920c) works fine from Windows Vista on the same machine and as a network printer from a machine running XP.

    Suggestions?

  3. My screensaver stopped working. I happens sometimes after I watch a movie, I think the video player disables the screensaver and never re-enables it.

I don;t know how to fix that, so I generally reboot (yeah, yeah...)

So after the comp comes back up, I have no internet access.

All the other computers plugged in the same switch work fine (all of them windows, but I don't think that's relevant), but this oen stopped working

I can ping the other computers and it works

I had a similar problem after I installed Mandriva 2008 (network fine through the switch, but no internet access). I did fiddle about quite a lot but this is what I *think* worked but I have no idea why.

I double clicked on the network icon in the system tray which brought up the network center window, then clicked on the icon ( not the text entry) in the Ethernet description line (the only entry I have). then went through the configuration process, I then started the network monitor and everything seemed fine, so started Mozilla and lo and behold I had Internet access! I had gone through the same configuration process half a dozen times before with no success. It was only when I accessed Network center in the manner described that it worked. As I said I have no idea why, but if you get yours to work the same way perhaps you could let me know.

    Good luck

  4. Success!

I was fiddling around with configure eth0 and trying to connect with Mozilla when suddenly everything worked. I wasn't doing anything I hadn't already tried before as far as I know, except that I had accessed drakconfig via a slightly circuitous route by right-clicking on the network indicator in the system tray.

Many thanks to those who took the time to answer my cry for help. :D

Yes, unfortunately the installation didn´t put the little red button in the corner. Eventually I managed to install it from the panel menu but by that time I had got round the problem another way. Thanks for taking the time to answer though. That particular issue is now resolved. The only remaining problem is that although the network is reported as up on eth0 I stall can't connect to the internet.

  6. Yes, I checked the MD5 file and also the burn. I used 2 different computers for downloading and burning and that doesn´t seem to be the problem, as you say.

I reinstalled 2007-1 and reset everything to defaults, then installed 2008 again. This has resolved all the issues except connecting to the internet, which is most recalcitrant, as the system reports that the network is working. I have 2 computers connected to a DHCP modem via a switch. The modem connects to a microwave link (not many wires here in rural Spain!) which is pretty solid at 350 up /150 down connection speeds. (for here that is really flying!).

I think the problem may be that the computer went for repair (under guarantee) when the motherboard failed a couple of weeks ago. When it came back eth0 was reported as does not exist, but 2007 detected eth3. Everything worked fine after I switched the network port to eth3. 2008 is reporting the same interface as eth0 and I cannot find how to change it. The port worked fine as eth3 under 2007 and gives no problem in Windows Vista.

Any further suggestions much appreciated. :wall:

  7. I managed to install Mandriva 2007 on 2 machinesd and get them bot up, running and talking to each other and respective Windows shares with no real problems, but 2008 has me foxed completely.

It reports no Windows installation when I try to set my Windows file sharing.

I cannot connect to the internet, even after shutting down shorewall, reconfiguring the interface and reinstalling the distribution.

I cannot shut down! Instead of the dialogue box I am used to with the various Session and Rebooot/Turn off options, I get the option to End Session or Cancel. End session takes me into the bash shell, which sometimes shows a string of mount-related error messages and sometimes just the login message.

I have reinstalled the distro 3 times with no change in results.

The desktop is identical to the one I configured under 2007, with a few of the tweaks of 2008 visible.

I have tried downloading and burning the CD from 3 different mirrors so I don't think this is the problem.

    Any suggestions welcome!

  8. I have an Intel core duo machine with Mandriva Linux 2007.1 installed with Windows Vista Home Premium, connected via a switchbox to an Intel Pentium 3 machine running Windows ME and Mandriva Linux 2007.1 The switchbox is necessary to connect both machines to the Internet via a DHCP Telephony modem and microwave link to my ISP (this is necessary as my locatiion in Spain is very remote and there is no chance of a hardwired landline in the forseeable future). Both machines in both operating systems are configured for 2 users plus a guest login and both Mandriva setups and the Windows Vista setup also has a superuser (Root or Administrator) setup. The Windows ME system does not appear to allow this.

I want to be able to configure both machines to be able to access both the remote linux "Documents" and the Windows "My Documents" folder file for the logged-in user as well as the Windows ME/Linux setup accessing the printer attached to the core duo machine and the core duo machine windows/linux setup being able to access the fax/modem installed in the Pentium3 machine. (I could move this modem to the core duo machine but it would invalidate my 2-year warranty).

In short, I would like to be able to read all documents from both machines in Linux and either version of windoes, as well as access specific hardware resurces on each.

So far I have only been able to configure the Core Duo machine to access the Windows ME My Documents folder. Every attempt to read from the other machine results in a password request (Windows ME) for a password that I know I have never entered, or Do not have permission error message from Linux. I am getting nowhere with peripherals sharing. Can anybody help? (PS I managed to corrupt one of my fstab files using the Samba mount points option in Mandriva Control Center and needed to use a liveCD version to recover the system and reinstall a backup.

    Help please!
