  1. Hi, I've followed instructions found here: http://www.linux.com/articles/54610 and enabled suspend to ram on my HP530 laptop, and it works fine except on resume the screen is almost unviewable, like greyed out. The only way to overcome this at the moment is to log-out and back in again. Is there a setting I can tweak to fix this? Thankyou
  2. my panel option was greyed out too, but then I tried 'main toolbar' which was set at 22, and changed it to 16, and it worked, thanks again for tip. I'm going to try Gsynaptics as suggested in the ArchLinux wiki, the other solutions seem quite involved, and though I don't mind editing config and init files, from experience I've found it hard to backtrack when something I do doesn't work! Thanks for suggestions
  3. Thanks for reply, that's a start, I've no doubt in time I will resolve other minor irritations
  4. Hi, I've just installed 2009.9 on my laptop, and have a couple of niggles with kde 4.2 ("only a couple" you say?) whenever I send an app shortcut to desktop, it sits right over another icon, even though I've selected to sort icons by name, and allign to grid. Also, my synaptic touchpad is very sensitive to touch, but how can I configure it? Qsynaptics is installed, but has no ability to control sensitivity, (perhaps it's a driver issue?) How can I re-size panel icons? They appear quite large and clunky, and there doesn't appear to be anywhere in panel settings to adjust icon size. I know these are only minor problems, and really I quite pleased with mandriva, (having come from sidux where my touchpad died immiediately after upgrade to KDE4.2). But I must admit I preferred KDE3.5, but I suppose progress is progress. Thankyou
  5. uninstalled hal, it also uninstalled 111 other packages 'to satisfy dependancies' , took out kde, unable to login. As it's a new installation (1week old) I'll re-install, leaving out backports etc, but I will need plf for codecs etc (I use Tovid a lot, it's brilliant) Thanks for all hints and suggestions.
  6. We seem to be getting off the track, as I said earlier, extra repos are for codecs etc, which I now have, so those repos are turned off. Getting back to my hal problem, does anyone know how to troubleshoot this problem of hal not starting on boot? How can I start it manually? It won't start from MCC. rpmdrake says I have hal-0.5.9-0.rc2.2mdv2007.1.i586 installed.
  7. thanks for tip on repositories, I'll look into it when I've sorted my hal problem. I've removed thac repository and carried out update with no problems, now have green tick! Hal daemon still fails on startup, flashdrive still not recognised, but now hdc1 shows in devices.
  8. I enabled these repositories to get codecs etc for video and dvd creation. I do know that hal was running before I enabled all the repositories here:- http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ . Perhaps I should re-install and not enable those repositories?
  9. Thanks for the advice, I'll try it tomorrow, It's time to walk the dog now!
  10. I did as you said, The haldaemon shows as 'stopped' there is a tick in the box 'On boot' when I try to start it I get:- 'Stopping HAL daemon: [FAILED]' 'Starting HAL daemon: [FAILED]'
  11. hdd is pata on secondary master channel. fdisk -l is :- fdisk -l Disk /dev/hda: 41.1 GB, 41110142976 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4998 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1 2923 23478966 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/hda2 2924 4998 16667437+ 5 Extended /dev/hda5 2924 3942 8185086 83 Linux /dev/hda6 3943 4451 4088511 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/hda7 4452 4998 4393746 83 Linux Disk /dev/hdc: 30.7 GB, 30735581184 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 3736 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hdc1 * 1 3736 30009388+ 83 Linux fstab is :- /dev/hda5 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/hdc1 /files ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hda7 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdb /media/cdrom auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 none /media/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=utf8,sync 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs umask=0,nls=utf8,ro 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0 Also flash disk is now not recognised, could this be because hal is not starting? When I click on hdc1 in devices the error is 'Feature only available with Hal' When I try to acces /files through konqueror, no problems!
  12. I just added an extra hdd to my 2007 Spring installation, showing as hdc1. When I tried to write to it I got this error 'This action only available through Hal' (or something similar) On start-up I noticed this 'Start Hal daemon [failed]' What's happened to Hal? Why has he deserted me? Was it something I said?
  13. Thankyou, I think your avatar would see mine off! She's a thoroughly pampered little Jack Russell terrier. I cropped the avatar from a larger pic, she's actually sitting on a cushion on our sofa having just been barking her head off at a German Shepherd that was walking by!
  14. Quick update, Toronto up and running, using it to send this. If anyone's interested, Acronis OS selector recognises MCNLive, calls it 'unknown operating system' (just rename it) and then boots straight into it! Bit slow to boot on my 3 year old laptop (usb 1.1), but quite responsive when loaded.
  15. Yippee!! It's gone! I did as you both said, downloaded the uninstall prog, (has to run in windoze of course!) and got rid of it. Would you believe I had to accept a license to get rid of THEIR crap off MY flash drive! Never mind, it's gone now, now I've got 1 nice big 4GB /dev/sda1. Toronto here we come! Many thanks to all for swift, accurate replies
