  1. Have been running Wine successfully on both Mandrake 9.2 and 10.1. Now

I have made a fresh install with Mandriva2006 and trying to set up

wine. I use the package included in the DVD powerpack and install is

confimed OK, but directories for Windows are not created (./wine).

Should I try another Wine package or am I missing some libraries?

  2. Thanks for the help. Now got it up and running.

However want to run Guarddog in superuser mode. I know I can do it from the terminal but if I want to create a desktop icon what command do I have to add to /usr/bin/guarddog?

    Edit

OK I got a shortcut on the desktop running under user root, but how to make an entry to the menu for Guarddog running in root mode? Can now only make an entry for normal mode.

  3. Tried to install Guarddog 2.3.0 and 2.2.0 on MDK 10.1 OE but can't get it to work.

The program seems to compile OK , but when I start I get the following message

"Unable to open the network protocol database XML file"

    Same message for both versions.

Have Guarddog 2.2.0 working on a MDK 9.2 box.

Anybody know what is going on?

  4. I think I have a similar setup to the one you are trying to create.

Make a Ghost-image of your existing w2k partition. I assume this one starts on cylinder 0. Use Masterbooter/Efdisk to create a primary partition on your 60gb hdd with same starting cylinder with your choise of size.

Restore your w2k image to this partition.

Install Linux to the remainder of your hdd (or part of it). Put lilo on your linux partition (not in MBR) Run MasterBooter and the program will find the Linux partition and your w2k. You will now have a dual boot w2k and Linux hdd.

Ps If you want to back up your Linux installation Ghost does not work with MasterBooter but Paragon DriveBackup works fine.

  5. What secrets??

The "communication secrets" was known to my MDK 9.2.

So you mean somebody went into my old winmodem to change the "communication secrets" so it would not to work with MDK 10.0?

Sorry, I am sure you have a point. However if Linux/Mandrake can not work with the most common internet hardware (for whatever reason) it will unfortunately not

become an OS for the masses and a lot of people will never be bothered to have a go.

  6. One of the first things you want your computer do is to connect to the internet.

If you live outside Europe or US that meams you need a working modem/dial-up connection.

The available hardware for such a connection is a so called "Winmodem" or an external modem, however most new computers are delivered with "Winmodems" not external modems.

Linux/Mandrake acts like "Winmodems" does not exist and no drivers are enclosed in the distribution CD's.

The available drivers you can get through a patchwork of support sites on the web.

How to reach them without an internet connection?

When you finally find them it is still no straight forward installation. Most of the time you are required to do alterations to all sorts of configuration files.

I have a MDK 9.2 with a working "Winmodem" setup, which I think took a week to sort out and I was looking forward to the new Mandrake 10.0.

After 2 weeks of hard trying, despite fantastic help from the "Ltmodem" community I am still without a working internet connection on my Mandrake 10.0!

Anybody said Windows? Yes, any day......

  7. Restored my MDK 10.0

No lines in /var/log/messages regarding PPP

however some messages in reference to the modem:

Jun 13 10:47:06 localhost kernel: ltmodem: no version for "struct_module" found: kernel tainted.

Jun 13 10:47:06 localhost kernel: ltmodem: module license 'Proprietary' taints kernel.

Jun 13 10:47:06 localhost kernel: Loading Lucent Modem Controller driver version 8.26

    Jun 13 10:47:06 localhost kernel: Detected Parameters Irq=3 BaseAddress=0x9400 ComAddress=0x9000

    Jun 13 10:47:06 localhost kernel: ttyLT0 at I/O 0x9400 (irq = 3) is a Lucent Modem

  8. Have been using PAP and always worked on 9.2

Restored my Mdk9.2 to compare setup and output.

    /etc/ppp/options are identical in 9.2 and 10.0.OE

    lock

    noauth

    noipdefault

    usepeerdns

Output from connection using same modem same ISP:

    ATZ

    OK

    ATDT1222

    CONNECT 50666 V42bis

No lines referring to PPP in dmesg from Mdk 10.0!!!!!!!!!

    So where is PPP?

Will put back Mdk 10.0 and check for var/log/messages.

  9. Hi

    The output from Kppp terminal:

    ATZ

    OK

    ATI

    LT V.92 Data+Fax Modem Version 8.31

    OK

    ATI 1

    E851

    OK

    ATI 3

    LT V.92 Data+Fax Modem Version 8.31

    OK

    ATI 5

    8.31,0,19,11C1,0440,11C1,0440

    OK

    ATDT1222

    CONNECT 52000 NoEC

    NO CARRIER

My understanding is that NoEC reflects the failure of the modems to talk

between them although the analog part of the line is definitely working.

When I check with dmesg I have NO lines with PPP so I guess it is not there,

    but don't know why.

  10. Just installed Mandrake 10.0 OE replacing 9.2

Have an Agere modem that worked fine in the 9.2 version.

Have the new drivers for kernel 2.6.3-7 working but after dialing no

authentication starts. After a while the modem starts redialing.

    Kppp installed

    Any help will be appreciated

  11. Yes I understand, but previously upgrade worked OK from 9.1 to 9.2 and I am sure it is supposed to work. It must be part of the plan, why wouldn't it?

Hate to think about a new install and reinstalling all applications and get everything to work the way I want. I wanted to try 10.0 but may have to stay with 9.2...

Must be an obvious explanation to my problem and I hope someone has a solution!

  12. Trying to install Mdk 10.0 OE on top of 9.2

Booting on CD1 and upgrade process starts but halts almost immeditely with following message,

    An error occured

    Oops, no root partition

The MDK 9.2 is running perfectly in following setup on Segate 10 GB HDD

    DOS part cyl 0-257

MDK Root cyl 258-1004 Size 5.7GB Used 2.4GB

MDK Swap cyl 1005-1099 Size 745MB Used 617MB

MDK Home cyl 1100-1239 Size 1.1GB Used 309MB

The MDK 10.0 ISO CD' s all OK on md5sum!

    Will appreciate any suggestions!

  13. Now I got this great new Benq DW800A DVD+ recoder with its bundled Windows software.

Now I want to use this with my MDK 9.2 but can't find any DVD+ recording software for Linux. Only found a GEAR package for USD 800 +++ that does DVD- !

Has anybody any experience in DVD+ recording on Linux?

  14. Anybody got DC++ to work with Wine?

Have searched Google and found some advice but the program still does not work

    100%.

When I try to change something in the "Settings" menu nothing sticks.

The search and download works, but the download area only shows an icon, no user name, progress or other info.

Using MDK 9.2 and Wine 20031118.

    Any help will be appreciated

  15. First a slight correction to my previous post.

Of course both Ghost and Paragaon DB runs from floppies, however you need DOS partions either on your HDD or on your network to save the images. I kind of forgot as I have extracted the files from the floppies and run the programs from my DOS partition.

As per comments made by DragonMage and pmpatrick TrueImage seems to have difficulties with ext3 partitions. My /home partition is ext3 and it appears that TrueImage only manages sector by sector backup. As far as I know the partitions are not corrupted, works fine and all log off and kill processes is all OK.

Paragon DB doesn't seem to have any problems with the filesystem.

Just backed up my / and /home partitions with Paragon DB

/ Size: 5.7 GB Used: 2.1 GB Image Size: 800 MB

/home Size: 1.0 GB Used: 0.3 GB Image Size: 100 MB
