  1. If you are using Gnome, you can try Applications -> Tools -> CompizConfig Setting Manager, and there you can configure the parameters and hotkeys for all the effects.

I guess the equivalent in KDE also exists, I just don't know exactly where.

  2. Thanks. I think the repos were configured correctly, because I could see the new packages from the MCC. It just wouldn't install them.

The weirdest thing: When I followed your advice and ran 'urpmi' from the command line, it found 384 packages to install! So it's now running in the background, and I hope I won't bump into new problems. But still, I don't get it: what's the difference if I'm running from the CLI or the GUI? Shouldn't it be the same? And what went wrong with the original installation?

I'll update when the installation is over.

  3. Hello everyone,

Last night I thought I successfuly upgraded from 2008.1 to 2009.0 (Gnome), using the Free CD's. I see today that not all the packages were replaced. For example, I see in the MCC openoffice.org-help-en_GB ver 2.4.1.5 installed (and marked with green arrow), and the same package with ver 3.0.0 not installed (and marked with blue arrow).

It also introduced me some difficulties. After having no 3D effects, I saw that I ran with compiz 0.7.2 instead of 0.7.8. Installing the new package and removing the old one manually solved all the problems.

So is there a way to replace the old packages with the new ones automatically? What went wrong?

    Thanks!

  4. Thanks for the useful review, interesting to read.

The point is though that this is a hell of a big question to ask of a newcomer to Linux, particularly as it only has a yes/no answer and no real information as to what it might be basing its decisions on.

If I were a complete noob and would see the distro telling me that a number of packages is not needed, I would always go the safe route and click on "no" and thus stop the removal process.

If it's a newcomer to Linux, from where will the system remove the packages?

  5. yossarian, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but adamw is referring to updating the SPE (Stani's Python Editor) and adding it to the /updates repo. He was not referring to adding Lotus symphony to the /updates repo. :)

Of course! I knew that! Don't be silly. Of course he wasn't referring to me. Did you lose your sense of humour? Did you really think I had thought he meant to upload Lotus? I mean, just the thought...

    Ok, you were right.

  6. OK, I just fixed up and updated the spe package in Cooker. I'll send the fixed version to /updates for 2008 and 2008 Spring. It should land there in a few hours, depends on your mirror.

Wow, thanks. I was in the process of writing you a reply that you shouldn't try too hard, as I really only want to give it a shot and see what it feels like. Hope it wasn't a bother.

BTW, I don't get something: As far as my understanding gets, and it doesn't get very far, Lotus is not open source. If OO is distributed under GPL, how can that be? Shouldn't any derivative of OO be distributed under the same license?

  7. No you can still use OpenOffice since Lotus Symphony IS OpenOffice. At least it's largely based on it and from what I heard it's not a positive change.

I know Lotus symphony is based on OO. I saw the GUI is different though. I guess I'm freak for trying out new things, that's how I got to Linux and open source applications in the first place, BTW. I don't want to create the false impression that I'm complaining, I just want to know if I can install it.

  8. ... before installing an rpm file which is designed to run on an other distro (bad idea) try searching in the software installer.

I use OpenOffice as my documents editor, and thought giving Lotus Symphony by IBM a try. The problem is that in their site they only give packages for Red Hat and Suse Linux (http://symphony.lotus.com/software/lotus/symphony/help.nsf/InstallGuide). Am I doomed?

    Edit:

Forgot to mention I couldn't find Lotus in MDV repos.
