If you are interested in translation to Hebrew (watch it! it's written right-to-left) and you can send me the file, I can take a look and if it's not a big deal, I'll do it for you gladly.
PM me to get my email adress.
Good luck!

Yes, it does. And I've just updated the report, closed the activity and added a comment saying it was my fault.
But it's nice to see someone reads my messages. :)

Silly, silly me. I didn't disable compiz before trying to run the other window managers.
Sorry.

Hi all,
I'm using MDV 2009.0 with Gnome 2.24. I decided to try some other desktop environments. I installed icewm, awesome, dwm, evilwm, pekwm and wmii. None of them works.
After logging out and changing to another window manager (other than Gnome, that is), and then logging in, I get the following message:
Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskapce. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem.
Then I am thrown back to the login screen. Sometimes I don't even get this message, just get back to the login screen
Again, I have no problem logging in with Gnome, only with the other window managers, and in ~/.xsession-errors I didn't find anything related to wmii (only Gnome ,compiz and Firefox).
Does anyone know where to start?
Thanks.

Ok, I'll submit a bug report.

I installed wmii (window manager for X11) from the MCC. I restarted the computer and in the login screen I chose wmii session. After logging in I got the following error notification:
Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskapce. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem.
Then I was thrown back to the login screen.
I have no problem logging in with Gnome, and in ~/.xsession-errors I didn't find anything related to wmii (only Gnome and compiz).
Has anyone been able to run wmii on Mandriva? Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks!

Songbird is an open-source customizable music player that's under active development:
(When will we see it in the repos? I'd like to try it.)

Thanks for the post! It's very useful for me.

Since most naturally of us are (or were) MDV users, it's no surprise most of us are recommending it, and I can only agree.
But I have an advice for you: you can take a few leading distros, and run from the live CDs for a day or two. Of course running from the live CD is not the same as running from a full installation, but at least it will tell you something about the ease of operation, the look n' feel, and the HW detection. Then use your instincts and go with the distro that most impresses you.
I did it with MDV and Ubuntu almost two years ago, and MDV was much more convenient, but I haven't been tracking things and maybe today things are different.
Good luck!

Adam,
I'm sorry to hear you are leaving. Your contribution to the relations with the community was so valuable. I dare to say that it was one of the reasons why I chose Mandriva.
I wish you all the best, hoping you will quickly find new paths to fulfil yourself.

I added a picture to /usr/share/mdk/backgrounds a picture and changed its name to default.jpg, and got back the login window.
So I'm left with the splash problem only.

I don't have MSI Wind (yet?), but I have seen here threads describing issues with the wireless card. Here are two examples:
https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=71224
https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=68434
I read somewhere that MSI changed the card somewhere along the way, and some of the devices work out of the box, and some of them require tweaking. If I were you, I would try to run from the Live CD (both Ubuntu and Mandriva, maybe even other distros) in the store, before the purchase, to make sure it works. But it requires some convincing of the store manager, I would say.
Good luck, let us know how it works.

I'll be tracking this topic.
;)

I did all that. Apparently, task-gnome was not installed at all! I installed it together with some 53 packages... and still, no splash and no graphical login screen.

OK, I found it in general search. Here is its content:

Or maybe the file itself is empty. Where should I be looking it for?
-
It returned empty!

yossarian: try uninstalling and re-installing splashy.
I uninstalled splashy. Due to dependencies it removed many packages, total of 78 MB. When I re-installed it, it added only this package (1.4 MB).
Now when I login I get this error message :can't find theme 'mdk'". I get thrown to some default graphical window from which I login.
How do I bring back the missing packages?
-
Welcome and good luck!
-
Is it recommended to upgrade by changing the sources as an alternative?
You can do that, but if you don't rely on your connection, I suggest upgrading from the Free CD's (or the DVD).
-
Weird. I already have Splashy installed.
-
Just mentioning that I have exactly the same problem, since upgrading from 2008.1 to 2009.0.
-
I'm considering trying Claws. Can you give me a few examples, in what ways is it superior to Thunderbird?
Thanks!

In Gnome, have you tried System -> Preferences -> Prefered Applications ?

Sure, no problem.
