  2. Hi everyone, I'm running Mandriva 2007.1, and I am having a hard time playing streaming video. For example, I wanted to watch in YouTube that shows the new compiz demo (I found it in Adam's announcement). The problem is that the video starts to load and plays for a short split of a second, and then - nothing. Through the network monitor I see that data is still downloaded, but the video does not play, no matter how much I wait. And it happens also in other sites of streaming video, not just with YouTube. Is there something wrong with the way I configured the network maybe? I use a LinkSys wireless router, but the problematic specific computer is connected with a wire to the router. And I know it's not a problem with the router itself, because when I switch to M$ the problem disappears. Ideas, anyone? Thanks!
  3. Thanks, I looked at this Octave program, and it looks to me even better than the R language. They claim (and I looked at some of their functions) that they are almost Matlab-compatible, in the sense that you can write a script in Octave and then run it in Matlab (almost. I'm sure there are some misalignments). If it is true, it is going to be very powerful for me. Greg - any other suggestions? Share with me your insights on he world, no matter how general or irrelevant you think it is. Any career advice, a stock you think is going up, iPhone - pros and cons, everything, basically. Up till now you are two out of two. ;)
  4. Greg, tell me, are you a genius, or are you a genius? Thanks, man. You helped me a lot. I'm going to install it tonight when I come back from work. Do you have any experience with it? And Dexter - thank you also. I'll remember your advice next time I come across a software absent from the package (although I'm getting suspicious about the possibility such an animal exists).
  5. Hi everyone, I was looking for a software that will allow me to manipulate some data and put it on a graph, for scientific-like purposes (a bit like Matlab, but free). I found the R project, which looks interesting. I looked for it in Mandriva's repositories (via the MCC), but didn't find anything. In their download page, I found packages for debian, redhat, suse, ubuntu and vinelinux. Besides, they say one can get the source code and compile it on one's machine. So I have some questions: Is there any way to convince whomever that needs to be convinced (I don't even know who it is) to support this program and upload it to the repos of Mandriva? I know it's not just an issue of uploading the files, but also of creating a package an support it, but still. I guess it wouldn't help downloading RPM's for redhat and try to install it. It would never work. Bad idea. Right? Sorry for the clueless question, it's only because everything I ever needed up till this day I found in the repos (including a wife and a kid): how do I install something from source code? Is it recommended for dummies like me (dummies in the good sense. I know there is no good sense, you didn't have to mention that)? Does anybody work with this program? Is it any good? Does anyone work with a similar program? Does anyone create graphs (for publications, for instance) in C or C++? and if so, with what library? So many questions, so little time. So many thanks!
  6. OK, solved it myself. For the purpose of documentation and the welfare of the next generations, I describe here what I did. First of all, I noticed that when I tried to build a project (As opposed to single source file) I got the error message: make: *** No targets specified no makefile found. stop. I'm mentioning it because what I did solved both problems. And to the recipe: Install libtool package (I used Mandriva's MCC). (I don't get why it's not part of the dependencies of Anjuta, but never mind.) Create a new project, most preferably the simplest you can think of (Hello World will do the work). Find your project library in your OS file browser, and run the file autogen.sh manually (I use GNOME, so I right-clicked the file and chose "run from a terminal"). In Anjuta, go to Build -> Auto generate... Again in Anjuta, go to Build -> Build, or Build -> Build All. Voila! I really hope it will help somenone, some day. For me it took some three hours. Oh, and I'd like to use this opportunity to express my gratitudes to google, without whom I'd still be lost. Ciao and good luck!
  7. Hi everyone, I've been trying to write a short program in C. I used Anjuta IDE. Everything went fine (compiling, building and executing) until the moment I wanted to debug my code. I to enabled the debugger, and when I tried to put a breakpoint I got the error message: ERROR: No source file named filename.c. I have already defined the path in the Source paths. I looked for solutions on the web but couldn't find anything. I've also visited Anjuta's Help forum and there is nothing significant there, but I didn't post a question there (the forum doesn't look very alive, and you are much nicer. :) Has anyone encountered this problem or knows what to do? And if not, can you point me please to a place I might find a solution? Thanks!
  8. So it's not my wife who is safe, it's me. My wife is just disappointed. About the site - I think it's a good idea to refresh it, or to build some alternative dynamic site for the regular users. If I understand correctly the club is open only to paying members; If I were you, I would think about opening a place to have some fun for non-paying members as well (like mandrivausers.org, but maybe more official), but of course, it's always easy to come in demands when you don't pay. And again - good job! I really hope those things will help you guys down the road, you deserve it.
  9. First of all, I'd like to congratulate Adam for his interview. IMHO it was very interesting and did a great service for Mandriva, and I can only hope the PR will help the business as well. If I may, I'd like to wonder about only one thing: how come such informative interview appears in disrowatch and not on Mandriva's website? I guess it sounds like I only know to complain (which is true. or at least it's the only thing I'm good at), but still: why is the site so static? Why doesn't it provide more information about what's going on in the development teams? Maybe I'm wrong and not aware to those places where things are happening (which is also Mandriva's fault, if you asked me), and then I will be happy to stand corrected. Disclaimer: when I started writing this comment my wife came by and saw the article in Distrowatch. When she saw Adam's picture she mentioned he doesn't look bad, so my response might be colored with a somewhat negative sentiment, not to mention resentment.
  10. You're a genius. I owe you my life! It worked! It worked like a charm. It was dark, but then I've seen the light and I've got my life back! WOW, you really saved me, thanks.
  11. When I'm logged in as root, in my user's (not root's) home directory I see only the "regular" folders (Desktop, Documents, Download, Music, Pictures, Video and tmp).
  12. And if I delete the user and then manually set to the new user (with the same name) also the same uid? Still not recommended? I'm afraid I'm newbie to Linux. Can you direct me to those files you suggest to delete? In what folder ar they saved? Regarding installing KDE - I tried it once, and the results weren't good. I installed Mandriva from the live CD so I only have Gnome, and I prefer not to get into new adventures at the moment... More than that: Even if I did succeed in installing KDE, that wouldn't help, because I line Gnome much more. I'd like to emphasize that I can log in as root, so I have access to all my files.
  13. Ok, I guess sometimes no news is bad news. So if I can't solve the problem, maybe I can work around it? I thought to remove the problematic user and to make a new user with the same name. Will it work? Will all the preferences and files (Firefox bookmarks, for example) will be associated to the new user? Thanks.
  14. OK, where should I look for it? I took a look in /usr and found many files that begin with gconf, most of them executables.
  15. Sure, I'm going to try it. but I should have mentioned I use Gnome, not KDE. Does your recommendation still apply? And a later comment: I tried to do it, but I don't know where the .kde file is saved. Anyway, I logged in to my user from the terminal and typed "cd..", and got a message that I am not permitted: bash: cd: ..: Permission denied So maybe something is wrong with the permissions of the account? And an even later comment: I tried running chown -R username:username /home/username from root. I didn't help either.
  16. Hi everyone, New day, new problem. I was working on a document with Open Office, tried to save the document in .doc format, and got an error message that a Java runtime machine is missing. I tried to open a firefox browser to start looking for that java machine when my computer totally froze. Didn't respond to any combination of keys (even Ctrl-Alt-F1, I think it's going to runlevel 3). So I made a hard reboot to the computer. Now I can't login with my old user. After typing the password I get a black screen for a few seconds, and then I get back to the welcome screen of the user name. I can login with root, so I guess something is messed with my user. Thanks.
  17. OK, I switched it from GDM to XDM (I don't have KDM) through the MCC.When I log out and try to log i as a different user I don't get any messages, I am just thrown back to the original screen where you type the username and password, so that doesn't help either.
  18. I have a few files called hosts. hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost hosts.conf: order hosts, bind multi on nospoof on spoofalert on hosts.allow: # # hosts.allow This file describes the names of the hosts which are # allowed to use the local INET services, as decided # by the '/usr/sbin/tcpd' server. # hosts.deny: # # hosts.deny This file describes the names of the hosts which are # *not* allowed to use the local INET services, as decided # by the '/usr/sbin/tcpd' server. # # The portmap line is redundant, but it is left to remind you that # the new secure portmap uses hosts.deny and hosts.allow. In particular # you should know that NFS uses portmap! hosts.rmpnew: 127.0.0.1 localhost Regarding the kdm, I've never used it, and I don't know how to switch to it. If you give me the guidance, I'll try it. So what does it look like, doctor? Tell me the truth: how much time do I have?
  19. I renamed the .X93-lock file, but it didn't help; a new file, again called X93-lock, was created. Any more ideas?
  20. You are right, thanks. And this is what I got from the file (only the relevant messages): /etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp /etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/bin/sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/lib/gdm/:0.Xservers" -h "" -l ":0" "username" /etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup... /etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession GNOME Can't register passkey agent The name org.bluez was not provided by any .service files SESSION_MANAGER=local/localhost:/tmp/.ICE-unix/5890 compiz: water: GL_ARB_fragment_program is missing ** (gnome-obex-server:6061): WARNING **: Unable to register SDP record for OPUSH Initializing gnome-mount extension So... Is the conclusion still to delete the X93-lock file, or do you think the problem is somewhere else?
  21. BTW, where should I look for this .xsession-errors file?
  22. OK, thanks. I'll try it later and report back.
  23. Hi everyone, Yesterday I logged out from my account and tried to log in to another account. I got the following error message: Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of disk space. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem. No need to mention that my session lasted much more than 10 seconds (and why is it important, for that matter?). The generous offer, to log in from failsafe session, was gently declined, as I have no idea how to solve the problem. after clicking the "View details" button I saw the following message: Fatal server Error: Server already active for display 93 this server is no longer running remove /tmp/X93-lock and start again ... Can't register passkey agent The name org.bluez was not provided by any .service files I was also directed in the original message to ~/xsessions-errors file, but I couldn't find it. What do I do next? I didn't want to delete this file without consulting with you before.
  24. I'm not familiar enough with Ubuntu's site. But I'll give you an example: If you click the support button on the upper left toolbar (because there is also support in the Products/Services pop-up menu, and Support under the individuals window, which leads to a different page than the other two options!), you don't get support. You get an introduction for all kinds of support: enterprise, individuals, hardware (which is not on the same level as individual/enterprise), and suggestions: register your product, buy partnership... It's mainly a commercial to the club, which is important, but why to mislead the user to think that he is going to find support there? Let's call the child by his name and title it "Why join the club" or something like that. Under support, just put a huge link to mandriva's wiki or documentation, IMHO that would do the trick. Take me for example, up to this very minute I'm not sure where the Mandriva's official documentation lies.
  25. Maybe I would use other words, but s0me0ne has a point. Mandriva's site is not intuitive enough, it is difficult to get there what you need (unless you are only looking for the download section). Their registry mechanism is also too complicated for me. On the other hand, their shortcoming does a fine service to MandrivaUsers.org. ;)
