  1. If you add the repositories from easy urpmi or smart urpmi then you should be able to find a package called fonts-ttf-thai. I just tried a search in Mandriva 2007.1 and I have this package avaiable.

Also Mplayer and other players should be avaiable from the Mandriva control centers software installer. You should not need to compile it yourself. If you choose Mplayer then install the mplayerplugin as well to have mplayer integrated in your browser.

If you need Wine then you can also install this from the software installer. If you install Wine you can check out the winehq site for details on mediaplayer or have a look at Winetools which can install Media player.

Ubuntu does not really have more software than Mandriva. You just have to make sure you have the software repositories installed. So go to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ or http://www.mandrivauser.de/smarturpmi/ and follow the instuctions. I recommend that you install at least "MAIN, MAIN UPDATE and CONTRIB" but you may want the PLF NON-FREE and PLF FREE plus BACKPORTS too.

I also recommend this site which helped me a lot when I was new to Mandriva: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Mandriva

It can help you setup the repositories and install software quickly.

Best of luck to you. Mandriva is a great system and I hope you will get it working like it should. :D

  2. My root partition seems to be growing bigger and bigger even if I remove an installed package it still takes up space.

Half an hour ago I installed the game "savage" but I had problems with it so I removed it. But now it seems like savage is still taking up space on the harddrive.

The directory "/root/.local/share/trash/files" is huge and there are also a couple of "savage" directories in this folder (about 600 MB each). If I delete these folders then new ones are automatically created. If I delete the folders "savage, savage1, savage2" then new ones are created and numbered "savage3, savage4, savage5".

Isn't this folder a tmp or trash folder? does it have to take up 10 GB of space or can I delete things in it in some way? Any folder I delete is recreated with a new number, like mentioned above. The folder is also full of RPM packages.

I hope someone can improve my knowledge about this issue. I generally have no problems using Linux but I do have some problems cleaning up my system when removing software. Every time I install/uninstall something I loose space (>6 GB the past week).

    Thanks in advance

  3. is there anyprogram ion mandriva to update ur drivers or anything online? or download updates? i downloaded something called easy urpmi...dont know what it does...well if you can help me that would be greatly appreciated...thanks

You can use rpmdrake from the Mandriva control center (MCC) to install software, update and setup media mirrors. You can also follow the guidelines from easy urpmi and add media mirrors from the commandline.

To auto update everything I normally use this line (as root):

    urpmi --auto-select
