  1. I tried to run a config as root and it said that I didn't have permission, but maybe I was doing something wrong, I will try the link.
  2. I have grip, but I couldn't figure out how to use on a file instead of a cd.
  3. Well that didn't change any thing, it sounded good though. I think I will try the menuski, unless some one has a better option. I am kind of amazed that a problem this significant could not have a definite fix.
  4. I couldn't find oggenc and for some reason 9.2 rpmdrake doesn't have descriptions for most of the packages.
  5. So, oggnec wave <-> ogg lame wave <-> mp3 ? ogg <-> mp3 I would like everything in ogg, but I want ti be able to go back to wave also
  6. Glad everything is working brads. One hint, the people with more penguins tend to give better advice, my knowledge is minimal, but I have fought with kppp enough to know a little bit about it.
  7. where did you find those? :D
  8. I am looking for a simple package that will convert sound files between the different formats. I don't want something that does 800 other things. I have tried a couple of the packages(audacity, rosegaden) and they are cumbersome and slow. I just want something quick and easy. I actually had one for windoze it was very nice, I hope I can find one for mandrake.
  9. I can't seem to get anything to print from gimp. I went to the gimp site and looked in the manuel, I am more confused now. Anybiody know anything about printing? I also looked into GUG -gimp users group, but I couldn't find anyplace to register or to contact anyone, unless I wanted to get the mailing list. Any ideas?
  10. actually I have menus in fluxbox, I just can't customize them
  11. I am using 9.2, but iwas using 9.1 until about three days ago and I was have the same problem in both, I think one of the updates f*cks something up when you install it, I used 9.1 for 3 month and I change the menus a couple of time, and then I did an update and I have had problems ever since.
  12. Hi brad OK I will assume you are using KDE. kppp will be in the menu under network/remote connections, or in the "what to do?" menu When I used KDE I set it up so that a left click on the mouse brought up my menu, But just open the menu scroll down to network and then to remote connections and then kppp network -> remote connections -> kppp Another option is to open a terminal and simply type kppp and hit enter. As for a flashing compurt in the sys tray, I don't know about that, but kppp will put an icon in the tray that flashes when there is traffic and you can left click on it to get details or disconnect, it has to set up from the kppp GUI click setup and then scroll right to Misc and then just check the dock in panel box kppp GUI -> set up -> Misc -> Dock in panel box GUI - graphic user interface (I think) It is how you normally control a program. If you have any problems let me know
  13. Does anybody know how to change menus from a terminal? GUIs don't seem to be working for me.
  14. I have managed to get menus back in kde, but I still cannot change them. I downloaded the rpm update and the draxtools update, and I tried to get them back, and no luck, but then I tried as root and I atleast have menus, they are messed up and almost useless in their organisation, but atleast they are menus.
  15. I found this link http://lwn.net/Articles/59292/ that states the problem with the menus id because of an rpm db not locking and you can download an update, well I did that and still no menus.
  16. Well my system just crash and I had to reinstall. The funny thing is that I don't have any menus 9.2 is becoming less and less attrachtive.
  17. I have tried the mendrake option. I tried updating one of the bug fixes last night it was titled rpm and it said it could cause problems with menu, but it didnot seem to make any difference for me. I thinkjI might try reinstalling again. I have another problem this moring, my computer has been freezing. It worked fine last night, but it has done it 3 times in hour this morning.
  18. I switch from fluxbox to kde and I have no meus, luckily I can get a konsole. I tried the update-menu -v and it does a buch of stuff and then it just stops and doesn't give me a new prompt. It stops on: Update-menu [3508]: Running method:/etc/menu-method/simplified//gnome Is this what it is supposed to do or is something wrong?
  19. Ok I am back trying 9.2 again. I do have menus this time, but I cannot change them. I tried menu drake and then saved the changes, and then rebooted and it was still the same menu. The other problem is that when I try to get packages form contribs I get an error, and it says something like it may be out of date. I have been able to download a few things form contrib but not others, and the size doesn't seem to matter. So right now 9.2 is kind of working, but I am afraid to do an update, and I only get partial acces to one update medium. I have tried a couple of the suggestions on how to fix the menu problems, but none of them changed anything.
  20. kppp isn't automatically installed on 9.2 (another of its obvious flaws) You will find it either in networking or in the kde section of packages. If it is allready installed and you are using kde, it should be in two places. go to your menu and: Either in networking -> remote access -> kppp or things to do -> surf the web (or get online) I don't remember exactly Then you will have to set up your connection, and you can do this in kppp or you can do it in mandrake control center. The one advantage to doing in in the control center is that it will automatically find which port your modem is set for. A word of warning - if you are using a winmodem you will probably have problems. I would suggest a hardware modem or an external modem (I have this). Supposedly there drivers for the winmodems, but I never could get mine to work. Let me know how you make out
  21. OK I've installed dvdrip, but I couldn't find a tutorial for it. I tried ripping a dvd and I got 27 files, each abou 600mb. I'll admit this IS better than having 3 big file that I couldn't play, but having to load another file every 4.5 minutes kind of takes away from the viewing pleasure. So, what did I do wrong? :D
