Yes, If you watched the NFL (American Pro Football) Playoffs, they showed a IBM Linux commerical almost every break. Even my non linux using friends thought they were pretty good ads. Hopefully IBM will pony up the big bucks for a new one for the Super Bowl (NFL Campionship for the non sports people), now that would be great exposure as it's one of the most watched events each year. And I think it was CBS (network) that showed them the most and they cover the Super Bowl this year ( New England Patriots vs. Carolina Panthers Feb. 1, 2004- pregame to start about six hours too early :D )
-
Good read, this indeed could be a great year for the Linux OS, IF................
-
maybe the mods should ( or could?) put the libdvdcss rpm in the misc. downloads here, for those who still need it?
AC, are you finding SuSE to be a decent ( I like it anyways) distro with no or little community support (except here :D ) So far I have, but as you said their forum only has around 300 people. I guess we could direct those 300 or so over here for all their questions :P but that would be mean
-
Yeah, but you know what your'e doing. I for one don't, I'll be honest. Yeah I want all five discs, and I'll take the DVD's too :D ( I know- they contain the same stuff) . Thanks again, I now have disc two and will burn shortly
Off topic here, but this just place rocks. I just got a iomega zip drive at the house, mandy and suse saw it fine, I coulld mount, copy /paste, etc. Windows XP however, freaked out, so I did a google search, what I found was a bunch of Jerks telling people it was them or their pc, how that never happens, before someone actualy had something to add that helped. It looks like you need to install the drives BEFORE you install the drive (cart before the horse comes to mind) but I'll work on that tonight.
-
yeah youre right, what was I thinking
-
I was on the right track then, I didn't think it was for me, but I just didn't know what is was.

I have yet another question:
what is Suse sparc? I saw the iso's for this @ linuxiso.org, it's the 8.2 release, but I have no idea what sparc is? It's five discs what ever it is.
Anyways, I too installed only from disc 1, system runs fine, although I have no office software. I do have openoffice downloaded somewhere, so I can get around the disc 2 problem (soemwhat). Anyways, where are those knew iso's
-
Hey just to let eveyone know, I just burned the new iso and rebooted............it booted into the welcome screen, with options to install or boot to hardrive. I think this one is a winner!!! I'm at work, so I can't install here (unless my IT guy gives me the go ahead, but that would mean goodbye Mandy). Thanks everyone, now I can see what SUSE is really like, without a dial-up install.
-
pmpatrick,
that's kind of how I feel. I haven't tried it either, but it looks like a good distro ( and I guess I'm just like a kid at christmas -I want it now lol
-
I have a couple of questions:
1. if you do a ftp install of suse how do you install any programs, lin mandrake it's easy and with yast (and the discs) I'm sure suse keeps it simple. But if you install from the net how do you do this? I'm a newbie so maybe it isn't a big deal.
2. Is it possible to do the ftp install, and then create an iso image?
From what I've read it seems like suse is a very good OS, so I stop trying to get it for free and pony up some $$ for it?
-
I'm sad to say, mine is the same way. I couldn't get my system to boot into it, it acts like it's going to, but doesn't.
-
newbie question, is this a kind of alternative to wine?? (only for the old dos games)
-
Ok, I used the command mcedit ./configure and found this @ line 14582:
s/^\\([_$as_cr_alnum]*_cv[_$as_cr_alum]*\\=\\(.*\\)/\\1=`\\2`/p"
all of which means nothing to a newbie like me  So does any of this make sense to anyone? what do I need to change?
-
I'm trying to get winex to configure,so my daughter can play her games on linux and so I can finally get rid of windows . I was usin DOlsens tutorial, but ran into a syntax error: (at bottom)

Do I use mc (or vi or emac) to edit this? and what should I look for? Can I go directly to this line?? I'm running mdk9.2 by the way,Thanks in advance.
:D
-
I didn't think so, Now I'm off to the basement to find my Quake discs, I may even load Q3 while I'm at it. Thats is, IF I find those discs
-
Now that just about everyone who wanted 9.2 probally has it and has played around with it, I was wondering which version of mandrake does everyone think is the best? 9.2? 9.1? 8.x? I still think of myself as a newbie, but As with any change is an OS I find things I like in the new and miss from the old. Right now I'm running 9.2, but I must say I think 9.1 may have been better, at least for me and that got me wondering what others here thought? No I don't care what version of Redhat-debian-Gentoo is better, what does everyone consider the best Mandrake release?
-
quick question: does plf have the pak0pak files or do I have to remember where i put that disc......... what about ground zero and the reconning? are they also available?
Ahh the good old days of Q2. Still a fun fps game!
-
I agree, as a newbie to linux, I have found Mandrake very easy to use. I played with redhat for a while and considered a few others(even dwonload a few iso's). after reading the 8 points, I think I will stay with Mandrake, and I'm reconsidering about suporting mandrake, by either buying a version or joinging the club. Its good to see them embrace the "free" community that helps them with bugfixes and spreading the knowledge base of their product. Is it perfect, no not yet, but what OS is?
-
I hope you find a host for these iso's. I would like to try SuSE, but I'm on dial up at the house, I can Download the iso's at work :D however and burn them :D . canI download SuSE (entire directory) on a windows machine and burn all to cds? then install?? I could do that, but a ftp install on dial up would take me into the mandy 10.0 relaease or SuSE 9.1 release
-
I like that answer
-
Can you get monkey island for linux?
As far as the ms v. {place distro here} linux debate, here's my two cents. I'm still consider myself a newbie, but the more I use mdk the more I like it. The problem seems to be that a lot of people (MS users) see linux as difficult to use and that there aren't alot of programs to run ( ie games). Somehow the different Distros need to come up with an ad compaign to show the ease of use and possibilites of the linux platform. The people I talk to seem to think that Linux / Unix are still the same and are best used for servers. Here at work we use a unix server, its ran everyday/24hrs per day for the past 5 years, now they are looking at using a windows server, even though I pointed out that we all reboot our windows machines more than once a day.
-
Tyme can you wake me up then too ???
-
I found a lot of good labels (pc / dvd /vcd /cds / games) at : http://www.cdcovers.cc
you'll find mandrake labels under L & M
-
:woops: Never mind...if I could read I woluld have seen its 9.1 :woops: Sorry for wasting your time and hopes

I also got my copy of SuSE here and at first glance I loved it. However, the fact that I haven't been able to get a dvd to play burns me up I have just found a tutorial on installing mplayer from source ( http://suselinuxsupport.de/ ) so I'll report back. (actualy this will be a good learning experience for me as I tend to stick with rpms). Yast is alright, I like the way it will tell you about conflicts but I agree it makes rpm installs a two step process if you click the rpm package. I havent tried to install a rpm from a terminal. so not sure if Yast comes up then.
