  1. OK, what this amounts to is that I picked up a well equipped tower for a friend. But without any operating system(s). Anyway I mentioned to a tech there that this is going to be a dual boot system. He said to find out which OS to install first. This will be a Windows XP PRO x64 system with Mandriva 2007 Spring? edition (I should have the DVD Wed. or Thurs.). Now, whether it matters or not this computer needs to boot to XP first because my friends girl friend has no clue about Linux, and my friend has little knowledge. If it matters this computer has a SATA hard drive.

    Later. Pepse.

i JUST went through a similar situation except on an intek Duo Core system.

    1) install XP 1st, as others have said use the regular 32 bit xp, you will be MUCH happier in the end, UNLESS you have a 64 bit windows app (like the 64bit version of Autodesk) which was specifically written for it

    2) If you are running a clean install windows will partition the drives as it installs, your BEST bet would be to take 1/2 the HD and create the NTFS partition on it, and tell XP to leave the other 1/2 alone, unpartitioned

    3) THAT way, when you install MDV you can just tell it to TAKE OVER the entire SECOND 1/2 of the drive, and not have an issue

    4) As for the SATA drive, is that the ONLY drive in the system? In mine i had an ATA13 for my XP and a SATA for my MDV, as cheap as HD's are today i figured that would result in the fastest performence. However if you ARE using ONLY the SATA, you might want to try and use an XP install that already has SP2 included.

    5) Thats actually ANOTHER point. If your HD is over a certain size (I think its 160gb) and your XP cd does NOT have SP2 installed you will ONLY see a certain portion of the HD anyway. My XP install is an original cd, so i used it to partition my 200GB drive into 2 100's, and work that way.

    6) when you get it all said and done PLEASE post some side by side performence comparisons. The AM2 is TRULY what i WANTED but I couldnt get them locally, cheap enough so i went INTEL. I WILL say however that my DC 3.4GHZ MDV 2k7 systems runs rings around my 3GHZAMD64 XP system, But I'd love to see the AM2 numbers.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Just a question.

QAnyone using N class WIFI cards, routers devices with MDV?

If so are you seeing a spped/distance increase?

I realize that its NOT a standard yet, and having once owned a 9600 modem I tend to stay away from NON standards.

But Cnet had an article this AM about the benefits THEY were seeing using N class (in windows of course).

Personally I use the Linuxant driver method in my laptop, but just curious to see if anyone has tried N class and if so what their experience is.

  3. You know I am by NO means a linux expert,

but I think we may be missing something.

back when i was young and pc's had terminals, a TTY message meant you were having output issues.

either your RS232 based paper printer/key punch wasnt working.

    OR

    you were having display issues.

my suggestion would be to take out the tv card, perform the install and then re-insert it after your syetm is stable.

i know on my XP pc, everytime i have to reload the OS (far more often than i should) I have to pull out my SBLIVE card, or the install fails. EVERY SINGLE TIME.

so hey try it, i have used MANY different distros, and i keep coming back to mandriva.

  4. now you know its interesting.

ive seen folks with these problems in a LOT of different distros and so naturally i was concerned when i recently upgraded my main linux box to a DC 3.4GHZ system, and yet my xandros 4 loaded perfectly and is SIGNIFICANTLY fsater on the daY TO DAY THINGS.

then LAST NIGHT i WENT TO TEST A CD FOR A FRIEND AND ACCIDENTALLY INSTALLED mATISSE FOR gnome AND IT LOADED WITHOUT A blink!

    i'M HAPPY

  5. was that usb key formatted under any other OS?

if you have a WINbox, try formatting it under FAT32.

if you DONT, then try the MCC and delete the current partiyiona nd re add a new one, then format

realize that noth these solutions will destroy and and all data that you have on the key.

  6. Well if youve seen any of my posts you know that i bought the flash an immediately had issues.

they were resolved but ONLY with the help of other users mandriva support was useless.

that being said I am currently experiemnting with 3 versions of mandriva on USB devices.

    1) the mandriva flash. once i got mine back to zero i immediately tried to put it on a 4GB key, and it worked. My original is on a shelf and i work ONLY with the 4GB key. #1 more room and #2 if it blows up I still have one working

    2) I also use MCNLive. This is AWESOME and if i had seen it before i pulled the trigger on the M-flash i would be $70 richer today. i never would have bought the Mflash. MCNL allows you to 'roll your own' and gives you all the tools needed. Dont speak Galeic? then why have itinstalled? The 1st thing i did was remove 300MB of languages that i DONT speak(who knows yiddish i mean really?). The Author is a HUGE proponent of running this version in RAM. If you have 1GB of ram (512 will do) you can load the OS and apps into RAM and it FLIES.

However there is a major limitation, if you are impatient. You MUST remaster the CD (key etc.) when you make systemic chanhes. For example it comes with Kmail installed. I prefer Thunderbird. So i install it setup my mail accounts and remaster it. Now everything is where it should be. Otherwise you lose it on reboot.

    3) The Author OF MCNL has a version that include virtual city VM software installed. From your flash key boot linux and then from within THAT you can create as many VM's with as many different OS's as your RAM will support. My goal, load a DVD with that version , load XP on THAT and then load my companies VPN on THAT. Instead of carrying a laptop all the time. I just need the DVD. This version ALSO has the ability to install to a USB Hard drive. So mine is on a 60GB WD Passport, powers from the USB and has LOTS of room.

Again this has the same remastering issue that MCNL does. SO you must be patient.

I guess you can tell which one i like more, but heck spend $100 and try them all, you'll STILL be ahead of windows vista. You know Windows XP SP3

  7. HOWEVER the MCNLive project from NL now has a version that A) has VirtualBox VN software installed (run XP in your Mandriva!). AND has the ability to be installed on my WD passport 60gb HD.

    :g-balloon::r-balloon:

I should come here more often ...

    --chris

please do, if your 'kris' from mcnl, please take your bows and tell us more, i know i;m only scratching the surface

  8. This is like an update.... I guess....

I just made a post there, we'll see what happens. All I'm trying to do is burn Audio CDs with K3B using FLAC files. Everyone here has given me all kinds of ways around the issue but not how to get K3B to burn using FLAC. Now I just learned from my brother Ixthusdan that in his 2007 ver. he can burn audio CDs using FLAC. I may have to upgrade, for now I would like to keep 2006 and modify K3B... if possible.

As far as I'm concerned, Mandriva Club is off my list, I received 1 reply. That's it... 1!!

Mandriva Users did what they could do. We didn't get the results I hoped but the gang is still trying. That means a lot to me. :D

    ACTUALLY

I did get my flash up and running again. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have the time to write the howto, its rather simple, but i want to make sure i get everything correct.

HOWEVER, it DID depend on having a KNOWN GOOD DD of a mandriva flash. Which i didnt have.

thanks to the linux community i have a working copy, which BTW i found you CAN dd to a 4gb device.

When i get the spare $ i may yet get an 8 or 12, they are just SO expensive right now.

HOWEVER the MCNLive project from NL now has a version that A) has Virtual City VN software installed (run XP in your Mandriva!). AND B) has the ability to be installed on my WD passport 60gb HD.

I thought I had the flash version working from it. Turns out it only worked from the PC that I did the dd from (go figure)

in case i neglected to mention it earlier, Mandriva sales said that the reason I hadnt heard anything was because 'their guy' was out sick.

everyone who would like to get paid to work on linux all day raise their hands!

whats with "the guy" sheesh even MY compan can afford more than 1 and we dont have NEAR the customer base mandriva does,

  9. take him to www.mcnlive.org.

walk him through rolling his own distro on a USB flash key and that he has the advantage of carrying his OS, his email, his bookmarks and everything else, in his pocket. And that ANY pc that will boot from USB is HIS pc.

A few weeks of that kind of power and he'll want to learn more. Trust me.

My wife LOVES the speed and flexibility of a FLASH boot, and of course if you keep it small enough you can run it all from RAM and FLY!.

Plus Kris has just released a version of MCNL that has the ability to 'host' other OS'es inside it (VMWARE like)

Lets see XP or Vista do THAT!

Arguing OS's is like putting a dress on a pig. When youre done , you both feel silly and the pig is REALLY mad

  10. does anyone even have a phone number for mandriva?

I have friday off, I'm willing to make some phone calls!

I'd have to dig out my documentation, but when you buy Power Pack there's a toll-free number for customer support in the manual.

If you get through to a human being, ask them to return my call from from four years ago.

    ;)

    HEY NOW.

i DID buy power pak 2k6

good tip, let me look in my emails from that and see if theres a Number in there.

    I'll let you know.

but i'm SURE that by then CORP will have swooped in and immediately claimed responsibility for EVERYTHING and resolved my issue completely.

    :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :wall::wall::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

    AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA

I slay me sometimes.............if i werent so pissed this would actually be amusing!

  11. I bought my first Mandrive (mandrake 8.1) It promised 30 days free technical support. I posted two questions and neither were answered. Fortunately I was able to figure them out myself.

so (i just want to make sure i understand)

you PAID $ to mandrake (this was before the name change) which would have been at least 2 years ago. for a product WITH paid tech support.

enetered a support request, and NEVER received ANY reply from TS?

see this seems to be WAY to common for a company thats asking us for $ when there are so MANY distros out there w/ 100% user supported tech service.

does anyone even have a phone number for mandriva?

I have friday off, I'm willing to make some phone calls!

this is really a shame because there REALLY is a LOT to like about mandriva

  12. I just made a post there, we'll see what happens. All I'm trying to do is burn Audio CDs with K3B using FLAC files. Everyone here has given me all kinds of ways around the issue but not how to get K3B to burn using FLAC. well mine has been in "expert " for almost 48 hours and the only one who has even LOOKED at it , is me, and that to add more to it.

however in the forum i do have one offer of assistance which if it works will be heaven sent.

  13. I wanted to ask if there is any interest in a magazine by Linux users, for Linux newbies (people new to Linux).

Since Tuxmagazine will not be free anymore, I think that created a void that should best be filled as soon as possible. Also, Tuxmagazine was good, but could use improvement as well. For example TuxMagazine didn't have any Gnome coverage at all. And even though I'm a KDE user, I think that's a shame.

But before starting on anything, I would like to poll the members of some forums:

    - are you interested in such a magazine

    - would you willing to contribute and if so, how? (and how regularly)

Some goals for the magazine (I'm just brainstorming):

    - frequent: at least bi-monthly

    - unbiased: Gnome & KDE, vi & emacs :P

    - sustainable: should be relatively easy to transfer tasks to other persons if this is really necessary

    - focus on the end user: the total newbie and the more experience "Linux n00b"

    - a number of recurring popular features (e.g. distro reviews)

    - freely downloadable

    - collaboration between different forums/distro users

Your thoughts and opinions are very welcome!

    Darkelve

I think its a GREAT idea, and yes i agree their is certainly a need for it,

there are so many minute differences that folks encounter when they move to linux, and so many people WANT to help others butperhaps are speaking a few notches ABOVE whats needed

  14. mindwave, You didn't receive help from Mandriva Club either?

I AM aware that this is not a mandriva employee forum, trust me.

i get a WHOLE lot more help from this and other forums that I do from mandriva empoyees.

I am a memeber of the M-club, and actaullay was a paying member for about 18 months.

I posted the review here, for several reasons.

#1 to let anyone who is considering buying one of these that there are issues with the device

#2 it is not exactly as advertised (the space issue)

#3 there ARE free alternatives out there

#4 in hopes that MAYBE someone has had similar issues and was able to resolve them WITHOUT returning the device (if mine goes back its going for good)'

#5 on the off chance that an employee of theirs peruses the site and would see the issues being had.

this site has a GREAT deal of useful information, and it would seem logical 'to me' that the corp would keep an eye on sites LIKE this for the GOOD information being passed, as well as for the BAD experiences that some folks may be hving.

I have about a half a dozen posts in the club forum and have 3 help tickets open with tech support right now.

as of THIS moment i havent received ANYTHING from corp other than the 3 emails that were mentioned previously.

the 1st was the one that came back marked "refused" when i realized that it was backordered and i tried to CANCEL my order and the other 2 from what is apparently "commercial" support, who instead of forwarding my information TO the right people, instead replied back that it wasnt their area and i should seek help elsewhere.

someone on one of the other posts had issue with the fact that i was being impatient 'since its the weekend' well that may be true, but since the english corporate forum was unavailable most of the weekend, it certainly compunds my aggrevation.

now here we are on monday morning, still no response and i dare anyone to try and defend them by stating that paris is observing MLK day.

heck if anything I should be at home.......

  15. Yeah, some xenophobic ones and some that are not xenophobic. Same goes for any other country. ;)

    let me rephrase that

maybe i'm coming off as a stereotypically xenophobic american.

i'm a gun toten flag wavin reagan votem republican card carrying citizen of the good ol u s of a.

and unfortunately sometimes people feel that we all are like the good ol bubba boys, but is not liek that, heck one of my best friends name IS bubba (well actually its ralph, but ya cant play football wih a name like ralph)

the idea being that i have become accustomed to a certain level of service and or satisfaction.

the reason that i moved away from windows was because i got tired of paying bill gates to allow me the honor of beta testing his software.

so in the Linux world when a small group from the netherlands can out perform, out program and out customer service an international company that wants my $, i have a problem.

not with MCNL they are awesome, and if you havent tried it you owe it to yourself BEFORE you buy the M Flash.

But having made THAT mistake i now want i to WORK, plin and sinple. I dont expect perfection, but i dont expect a series of compunding errors that lead to complete unuseability and then to be denied service by the e people that sold it to me.

this thread for example. was moved from whereveer i posted it, to here. awesome, someon felt that THIS Was a better place for it and that perhaps better discussion and better responses would ensue.

how much EASIER could it be in a corp to take my FIRST email, from thursday, and instead of telling me i'm in the wrong place, to say, "hey heres a better place for ths, but as long as i have it, let me sen it in the right direction for you, so that you get faster service"

i work in a building with 10,000 people in it, if ANYONE on my team EVERY declined to assist someone, even by merely patching them through to the people that they need, they would rapidly find themselves counting ONE of the THREE strikes that my company allows.

    its all about managing expectations.

wel that and a product that works

  16. Oh but it gets worse.

yesterday morning i got an error about no room on device EVERYTIME I tried to shut down.

THIS MORNING i started getting a SERIES of the same error messages, over and over, to the point that now it will no longer boot to the gui.

i havent tried a cli boot yet, but i'm not holding my breath.

i HAVE however attempted to boot it from 6 diferent pc's 2 laptop and 4 different desktps.

    no go.

wow i REALLY hope tha on monday they post that recovery iso. otherwise i think a call to the CC company is in order.

maybe i'm coming off like a xenophobic american, but it just amazes me that the .NL club can produce a product like MCLN and provide amazingly fast support, for FREE.

and yet with several more dollars 9francs wahtever) mandriva closes on saturday

  17. Ok, if you've seen my other posts you know that I’m NO expert, but I’m not 100$ stupid either.

But even I am beginning to doubt that now.

I bought the Official M FLASH on impulse. After 2 weeks and it didn’t show, I tried to cancel my order, only to have THAT email refused.

    It FINALLY arrived yesterday.

    1) The packaging is a joke, its is a piece of cardboard that’s folded over 3 times with about 1/2 a roll of packing tape holding it all together. I was truly disheartened when I saw that it had come from France that way. BUT not to judge a book by its cover I dug in immediately, and found FOUR copies of the same receipt all showing a retail value of $8USD, with a statement that that was not its value but only for tax purposes (fraud anyone?). After the 4 receipts I pulled everything else out and laid it on the table.

Unfortunately 'everything else' consisted of a subscription form for Linux Magazine (a GREAT mag BTW, just VERY expensive here in the states) and a pre packaged 2GB Dane-Elec flash key. For a minute I REALLY thought I had been sent a blank key.

I opened the package and on the side that you CAN’T se, its stamped Mandriva, so there was a little hope.

But ONE thing was glaringly missing. The ad states a CD is included to allow you to boot from devices that don’t support USB booting. NO CD. Looking in the Mandriva.com Flash Forum, I'm finding that I’m NOT the only one who didn’t get one. But so far no one has heard back from support.

    2) I plug it into the same AMD-64 3.8ghz laptop that I have been working with MCNLIVE on, reconfig the bios and boot away, and wait, and wait, and wait. Good thing I was feeding my son at the time, if I had to stare at the screen the whole Time I would have thought it was broken.

But lo and behold after several minutes a 3 or 4 page setup screen opened up and was in business.

Oh except it can’t find my wireless netw. So I load the same drivers from the same source as when I setup MCNL and it found the network and started cruising the net.

    3) I started poking around to see what the $35 was for (I figure the key is worth $35).

There is a complete install of open office, which I like VERY much. Firefox is installed and the default, Another plus for me! But Thunderbird is not? That one was a little perplexing. I am learning to work with KMAIL and KPIM, but I really DO prefer thunderbird, and everywhere else that I can use it, that’s what I AM using. Oh well I can add that later.

GIMP is loaded, very nice. Plus the usual assortment of games and themes and 'pretties' I don’t care for these things much. The biggest thing I do to 'personalize' my desktop is once a week I swap out the photo of my son I use as wallpaper. otherwise I usually turn EVERYTHING off, as I find things tend to move faster that way.

K3b is installed, but not where one would expect it, you kind of have to look in order to find it.

    4) I reboot and log in as root, or should I say TRY and log in as root "root logins not allowed"

ok I can set the root PW, but obviously I’m not trusted enough to actually log IN as root. OY!

So I reboot, log in w/ my user account and start cruising the shell, turns out that the advert isn’t EXACTLY honest. The image is 1.3GB and takes 1.4B of the stick so you don’t actually have an entire gig to yourself. Not a HUGE difference, but those folks that are finding it fills up pretty quick, now we can see part of why.

    5) I open the CC to see what I can pull out, just for grins to see how slim you COULD get this if you wanted, and having just gone through this with MCL I decided to look for LOCALES I wouldn’t use.

Folks there is over 400MB of language paks here. Now I KNOW I must sound like the stereotypical American xenophobe, but I tell ya there are countries listed here that I haven’t heard of since I 1st played RISK as a kid! There are MANY countries that I would have told you, you were making UP if you stopped me on the street and asked me if I knew where upper suboria was (note: lower suboria didn’t make it in the distro - sorry guys!)

    6) now the bad news. I've rebooted a total of 1/2 a dozen times. I went into the CC to try and do an install of audacity (not from the CLI, but I wanted to try the GUI 1st)

an error message states that its impossible to run 'unknown program install' you press ok and hit installed or installable and the next error is 'program has exited abnormally'

    sigh.........

I haven’t tried URPMI yet, I will this evening, I REALLY hope it works. I prefer the GUI method, but the CLI

worse yet, I JUST tried to shut down, I got stuck for too long, hit ESC and have about 6 different "DISK FULL errors"

    wow, this is bad.

There is a posting on the mandriva forum that they will be releasing a CD that will allow you to restore you flash to factory original, but if that doesn’t come out this week, this is going back.

you know I saw the ad for the flash and almost IMMEDIATELY pulled the trigger.

I DID wait 6 hours until I got home, and then sent my order in.

I should have listened to my inner voice the FIRST time.

if I had it to do all over again, I wouldn’t have bought it. especially now that I have several different MCNLIVES running.

    live and learn.

    Hopefully this will benefit SOMONE
