  1. Guys,

I know this has probably been addressed, but looking at THIS and several other forums I dont see what I'm looking for.

I have a LIVE version that I have installed to my HD, and everytime I add something I remaster it.

Thus if my pc ever dies I only need reboot from my 'most current' live version and reinstall it and I get all my apps, settingsd etc.

well now that we have gone from 2007 to 2007.1 does anyone know of a method whereby I can apply the updates, using a 2007.1 CD.

I'm trying to develop some documentation for a class so once I have the process down I can write a step by step.

Any and all help is appreciated, even if you just point me somewhere else, where someone may have already posted the answer.

I realize that the move from 2007 to 2007.1 may not be big emough to make it worthwhile, but then that in and of otself may make this the perfect test bed.

    Thanks

    J

  2. alternatively before you upgrade you should try:

    http://www.linuxant.com/driverloader/?PHPS...84da5dfefb7767e

I've been using it for 2 years and it is ABSOLUTELY the best $20 ive ever spent.

you DO get ton try it free to make sure it works for you 1st though.

for ME the best part is that the license is tied to your MAC address for the card.

since i like to run 3 different distros on my laptop i get to pay $20 once and use the same driver oneverything USING linux.

ive never tried their MODEM driver, but i would imagine it probably works just as well.

  3. maybe i didnt word my search very well (lernal update/upgrade) but I didnt see what I was looking for, nor in the FAQ, but i'm all about learning, or being redirected.

I am using a "live" install, thats been installed on a hd.

i don this so that everytime i make a change i remaster, that way if i have a failure i can pop the last cd in and just reinstall everything, applications, settings, favorites etc. righht back to the HD.

    however 2007.1 is out!

i havent looked at the spec sheet, but i believe that it has a few critical updates? including the kernal.

is there a "simple" method to do this? the live version that I'm using is a VERY streamlined version, with thunderbird opera, gimp, kds, audacity and 1/2 dozen others) i'm UNDER 600MB

any help or ideas would be appreciated.

    thanks

  4. ive tried it before with no luck,

i wish i could rememebr what the exact issue with itwas, but its been a few months.

HOWEVER i do remember that it could have been related to the MBR/ file format?

sorry the details arent clear however for some information on a GREAT version of mandriva that WILL install to USB check out www.mandrivaclub.nl and look at mcnl

its a VERY stripped down version, but the scripts to do what you want have been included

  5. Thats cause Xandros sucks :P

actually i like Xabdros 4 a lot, matter of fact it was my main desktop for almost a year.

the ONLY reason i came back to mandriva was the foundation my wife and i have established.

we are 'giving away' 10- 20 network stations to schools, churches, libraries etc.

as such we need to be able to have a comeplet OS and sw setup as cheaply as possible.

Now xandros offered us their distro at $7 per pc. the problem is that part of our curriculum is to create "live vrsions" of the OS that can be mounted on USB keys that the students get to take with them at the end of the class.

unfortunately Xabdros halted development of their own LIVER version last summer, and the paragon NTFS driver that they have installed is prprietary and expensive.

So wuith the help of MCNL I have miograted my own desktop back to mandriva and am moving along quite nicely.

but even the haters have to admit that for new folks moving from windows to linux, Xandros makes the learning curve VERY short

  6. did you try

    ./mythtv-setup wherever mythtv directory is

./ means in the current directory this is required if not in the path for executable

also you can do a find or use locate (install package slocate)

    to find where mythtv-setup lives

did you try running it SU?

I'm using 2k6 on my vid server and when the gui wont start, i have to SU/root to get it to run from the cli

  7. hate to say it, but that smells an awful lot ,like a HD issue.

is that a known good drive?

have you used it in anything else before?

did you partition/format BEFORE you started or is this the 1st time its been done?

my suggestion is to dload something small MCNL perhaps? and try an install that (knoppix maybe), or even winblows and see if you get the same slow install.

I had issues with MDV on an SATA drive where my MAIN boot partition was an ATA.

finally i moved everything to the ATA and use the SATA as data, and it flys.

my system is very similar except I'm uning an ECS pm400 MB and a VERY cheap geforce4MX vid card

  8. you guys rock, i spent WAY too much time online and in the store for them to point me to a $200 card that they KNOOW is supported by linux, and you guys all come through with a great solution for the free card!

BTW Soulse: your PnP experioence was that with mandriva?

I use both Xandros and MDV on my laptop.

    Thanks

  9. thanks for the clarification guys.

i kind of suspected that, but I know that certain types of DB's store text as text and some of them use a proprietary format which may or may not lend itself to compression.

I understand that when i install Aducaity I add 40MB (or whatever) to the size of my image, I just wanted to verify that i wasnt going to be losing an valuable size contraints just by updating my sources.

and yes although i do GENERALLY run a boring box, sometimes I like t play with some stranger stuff. and so having a wider vvariety of sources seems like a better idea.

  10. For clarity, hda is the master device on your primary ide channel. hdb is the slave device on your primary ide channel. hdc is the master device on your secondary ide channel, and hdd is the slave device on your secondary ide channel. scsi and sata devices show up as sdx, and generally follow your motherboard's sata channel lables.

If you have additional ide channels, the board native channels will be a,b,c&d, and then the add-in device will pick up the next letters. Older boards set the primary master as the boot device, but new boards can select any channel for boot purposes.

you know that part has always been what i thought but now you confirmed it.

and THAT is exactly why I'm confused.

my 120GB is the FIRST HD on the FIRST IDE channel, and yet somehow it gets labled HDE1

and yet the 1st HD on my SECOND IDE Channel gets the lable HDA1, now these HD's have been used in other systems so my question is, are the lables that MDV is seeing lables that are impressed on the drives from previous installations or are they how the CURRENT install of MDV is seeing the HD's

and IF this is how MDV sees the drives currently with what it believes are accurate lables, doesnt this fly in the face of what we all have been taught about the naming scheme?

    any have any ideas?

  11. Thanks for the info on the link, maybe this one:

    http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/c...tedPhoneId=1821

essentially its the Verizon Wireless PC 5740 card.

as for using my cell phone THAT one i know about, been using my treo for 2 years that way.

i just have aproject coming up that is VERY graphics intensive and using my cell phone as my modem, well i wont LIVE that long.

as for asking Verizon about linux, WOW.

ME: Is your 5740 supported by most major Linux Distrobutions?

    VZW REP: HUH?

ME: My laptop dual boots with WIndows XP and Mandriva 2k7, can I use it on both sides?

VZW REP: Windows XP will be all you need.

ME: Umm well beynod the obvious lack of concentration in that statement I really need to find out if I can use my Linux Partition and distorbution in conjunction with your card.

VZW REP: Umm well you could call Tech support

ME: I could CALL any one of 100 providers and buy a card from them, instead I chose to stop here, taking time from my day, to ask if you, the expert, can answer my question about Linux.

VZW REP: yeah Tech support would have to be called.

    ME: OK I'll wait....

VZW REP: well you can use that phone over there....

ME:So youre NOT going to tell me....

    So being bold I called:

"Thanks you for calling VZW where you get a free Cherry squishy with every question answered correctly"

so i hung up quickly and tried their on line chat:

ME : is your 5740 card supported by the Major Linux distrobutions?

Amanda: Unfortunately, I do not have any knowledge as to this information. Are you an existing Verizon Wireless customer?

    ME : yes

Amanda: What type of plan are you currently on?

ME: unlimited data and regional voice with a treo600, but i may need a 5740 card for a work relate project, I need to know if I can use it in a laptop thats using Linux

Amanda: Is this a program on your laptop?

(this is where it got pathetic)

ME: no its the operating system on my laptop

Amanda: Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess and NationalAccess services allow you to access the Internet, email and business applications with your laptop. A PC card is required for this service. Would you like to find out more?

    ME: right i know that

ME: what i need to know is, is your card supported by Linux

ME: I have been told by my local store that i need to buy the 5740 with a $60 plan, thats fine

ME: now what i need to know is. will your card work with my pc

Amanda: Are you looking to add this device to your existing plan?

ME: only if it will work in my pc with a LINUX OS

after 20 minutes amanda got a POOR rating and she had to ask 3 different people to confirm that they dont officially support linux.

hence my question to the community

  12. Guys,

I havent worked with URPMI as itself much.

usually I go through MCC and leave the defaults, occasionally I have added a single additional site, but i run a pretty booring box.

But reading many posts here, it seems as though a LOT of folks prefer EASY-URPMI and tout many of its benefits.

however since I'm using MCNL (a hd install of a small 'live cd') I was wondering if I followed the suggestions given by the EASY-URPMI process, would it add, considerably, to the space used by my installed OS.

I know this seems like a silly question, but I DESPISE OS drive crashes so I figure that if i run off a version like MCNL and then remaster it, whenever I make changes, keep all my data on a seperate HD, then anytime a crash occurs, I can pop in the cd/dvd hit reboot and boom be back to my EXACT desktop/install in 10 minutes.

because of that I need to keep an eye on the amount of spoace my install requires.

right now I'm working off CD, but i'm quite sure I'll need to move to DVD at some point, but in doing so I'll need more ra.

right now for example using mklivecd, my resulting ISO is 409MB, if I wstep through EASY-URPMI, will that go up?

i know this sounds like a pretty ignorant question, but the think i like about linux is that i always feel like i'm still learning (mostly because i am)

thanks for any and all input and ideas.

  13. Has anyone used MDV with a Cellular broadband card similar to this one being offered by Verizon?

    http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/c...tedPhoneId=1821

A work project is going to force me into spending the $ to buy one, and the more uses I can get out of it the happier I'll be.

verizon of course only supports Windows, and although I wouldnt imagine PnP useage (although it would be great) I'd love to hear from anyone using this specific card or any other like it?

    thanks

  14. In one sentence, what is at issue?

    likewise-- what do you want?

its more of a quirk and a WHY than anything else.

I would asume, that since the 1st HD in my box is a 120GB ATA, and the BIOS sees it as the 1st HD in the BOX and the BIOS is told to boot from that drive (after the DVDRW) that IT should be seen as HDA. But instead all versions of Linux that I install on that BOX, lable this 120GB as something OTHER than HDA (sometimes HDE sometimes HDB but never HDA).

All the jumpers are set correctly, but the lables are throwing me off

  15. heres a comment on your commentary.

I just built a new duocore desktop for my linux systems.

when i started I had Xandros4 as the 1st boot and the MDVPP2k7 on a seperate SATA drive.

well i tried a few 'experiments' and got to the point where NOTHING would boot properly.

ok, i had learned a long time ago to put DATA on one HD and OS and apps on another,

So i decided to start from scratch. reformat and reinstall EVERYTHING.

Its been a week, I have tried every different combination of EVERYTHING I can see and here's my question.

In my BIOS and in my actual HW setup I have IDE0 A = 120GB ATA HD IDE0 B = DVDRW

    IDE1 A = 40GB ATA HD IDE2 B = 200GB ATA HD

    I also have a Promise SUPER ATA 133 controller pci card installed w/ IDE3 A = 160GB ATA HD and IDE3 B = 320GB ATA HD

The MB has a SATA controller, adn I've never used one before, so i was thrilled to find that I could use ATA and SATA drives in the same box! As you might imagine I'm a data junkie.

    SO SATA 0 A = 160GB SATA HD

EVERY TIME I INSTALL and tell the setup tp take over a HD the list looks like this:

    40GB ATA HD = HDA

    200GB ATA HD = HDB

    160GB ATA HD = HDC

    320GB ATA HD = HDD

    120GB ATA HD = HDE

    160GB SATA HD = SDA

The BIOS says the 1st HD = 120GB ATA HD

When I setup my boot config I tell the BIOS to go to the DVDRW 1st THEN the 120GB ATA HD

BUT when I install MDV or X4 they BOTH have labled the 40GB ATA HD as HDA.

Is this an OLD lable from a previous partition? or is THIS part of the issue thats causing me to pull my hair out?

  16. recently i installed MDV2k7 PP as a 2nd OS on my duocore desktop :D .

The pc is pretty standard, duo core 3.4ghz 1.5gb ram LOTS of hd's

    Xandros4 is the 1st OS, its on a 250gb ATA133 HD

MDV is installed on a 200GB SATA device.

Both have been working fine for a week.

Thursday I closed PAN and it wouldnt launch again from the desktop, so i went CLI launched it and had to re setup all the configuratons (?)

Well I did a BUNCH of file transfers between it and my XP pc, things started to get flaky on the XP pc so i decided everyone needed a reboot.

now when I choose MDV from the boot menui get en error message about failing to start X and am asked to CTRL D or enter the ROOT PW.

CTRL D reboots, root PW, drops me down to a CLI that has a succeeding # next to the prompt.

for example LS shows the DIRS in my HIME and the # next to the prompt changes to 2

DFS shows the partitions and the # next to the prompt changes to 3.

it goes on like that. I can maneuver around the partitiopn, but not much else.

    anyone have ANY ideas? :wall:

i was REALLY begining to like MDV again.

    thanks
