  1. Well, I tried without Flash and the problem is still there. Took out mplayer-plugin also and it seemed to be OK for a while, but it was just false hope. I still have the problem

I'm thinking, maybe if I rip out the modem and toss it out the window, I won't have this problem anymore

  2. My line was checked recently and it turned out OK. My first thought was the

line or ISP, but that's been checked. This only happens in Mdk, also, it's not something recent (more than a month). I only posted now because it took that long to check the line, which I was sure was the problem

  3. When I'm on the net, every few minutes (anything from 1-5 min) activity freezes for a short time, usually about a minute. During this time I can't load a new page, the mouse hourglass just sits and waits. Doing "stop" and "reload" doesn't help

I'm using Mozilla 1.3, Mdk 9.1. The connection is by LAN, static IP. NIC is IBM 10/100 ethernet. This setup worked in Mdk 9.0 (Mozilla 1.1) without this problem and works without freeze-up in Win98/IE dual boot on the same machine.

I tried using Konq to browse and I experienced the same problems. It isn't site-specific

I'm assuming the problem lies in how 9.1 accesses the NIC, but I don't know where to start looking

    Anybody?

  4. I'm having some trouble getting something simple done. I want to experiment with vi and I want it to be in a text only black full screen (like the dos prompt, for those who remember)

I would like to be able to type something in a console and get to this stage, but the things I've tried haven't worked eg init 3 in console

I'm using lilo with graphics and autologin. If I disable autologin and use lilo text menu, I still have the graphical splashscreen

How do I get a full black screen?

  5. You can buy case fans which are fitted with the same plugs that connect between the hard drive or floppy drive and the PSU. I can't help you as to where to get them from, I don't live in the USA.

If you have access to old computer parts, you can use a PSU fan, cut off the connectors and wire it to one of the HD/PSU plugs. Makes a good case fan

  6. I'm using the Epox 8K3A with 9.1 and Windows dual boot. CPU is the AMD XP1800 and memory is 256 mb PC2700. I'm using the GeForce MX440 with 64mb. BIOS is by Award. There are no frills such as RAID or onboard LAN (actually, onboard LAN is not really a frill anymore)

The board is very stable and had no setup problems in either Mdk or Windows. This is my first Epox (used to buy Asus) and will not be my last

  7. I had font issues with 9.1 which I ultimately solved with a reinstall. I couldn't import msfonts and the standard fonts looked ugly, especially web pages in Mozilla.

Since I reinstalled, the fonts look better and I have msfonts. I have AA disabled in KDE. Right now I'm using Tahoma 12 in Mozilla and it looks good

  8. I had trouble with the 9.1 fonts, which all looked really ugly and couldn't load msfonts no matter what I tried. As a last desperate act before going back to 9.0, I reinstalled 9.1 and everything was OK

KDE seems to load faster at startup and generally looks better to me

  9. Just last week I stopped being able to send or receive email. Internet connection worked fine though. I assumed that if I could connect to internet, all my settings must be right

Eventually I found that my host name in MCC had been changed to something else. I don't remember doing anything to change it, but there you are.

Changed it back and got my email back

  10. I'm having a hard time getting msfonts to work in 9.1. I tried using the font import tool in MCC, but the fonts didn't appear anywhere.

Then I tried copying them one by one, but I got the same result. I've downloaded Texstars fonts with Freetype (don't know if I need it or not) and installed them, but I'm still not seeing ttfonts anywhere.

I made an entry in /etc/X11/fs/config pointing to the directory where the fonts are and restarted x, but still no luck

I need some help, I'm getting tired of these ugly fonts everywhere I look

edit: wrote the font path wrong

  11. Does anybody know of a book or website that gives console commands in a question and answer format?

To clarify, if I wanted to copy a file, I would look under "copy" and there I would find various commands to copy a file or directory or paragraph.

I have "Linux in a Nutshell", but it doesn't help when I don't know the name of the command I need, or that the command even exists.

What usually happens is I just default to the GUI, but I really want to learn command-line stuff
