  1. Thanks everyone.

    1) poweroff and reboot are softlinks to halt so, what i actually cant use is that.

    2) i dont kept the sources so im not able to use the "make uninstall" , what should i delete (manually i assume) before compiling/installing the new version? i mean where do i find the installed program... or should i just go on and compile the new version and install it over the old one?

    3) I didnt installed the Alsa drivers becouse when i was root i tryed sound and worked so i stayed with the " dont fix something aint broken" thing, but i know its better and all... i will try to install it then. But it should work without it, it does as root so.

About /dev/dsp it does exist and i checked all the permits and are all correct. but it keeps saying

** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): Permission denied

so i dont understand whats the problem.

    now, tyme wrote:

By default, the ''users'' group is not allow to use sound. To change that, add the following lines in your /etc/devfsd.conf file (the second one is only needed if you are using alsa):

    REGISTER sound/.* PERMISSIONS root.users 660

    REGISTER snd/.* PERMISSIONS root.users 660

Alternatively you may consider creating a new group called ''audio'', and adding permissions only for this group instead of the ''users'' group. This will allow you to easily permit or deny sound usage by adding/removing the user from the audio group.

This is in Arch as you sayd, but in this system i dont have the devfsd.conf, also, im in the "audio" group, wich is the /dev/dsp group. so i dont get whats going on.

    4) About Xfree i think im going to send an email to the list at beyondlfs to see if someone knows how.

I had a typo, its one slash /dev/ttS0

but the problem is with Wvdial, not with the X, im trying to make work an X front end for wvdial, but the actual problem is that if i type wvdial as normal user i get this:

    [code[

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.53

--> Cannot open /dev/modem: Device or resource busy

--> Cannot open /dev/modem: Device or resource busy

--> Cannot open /dev/modem: Device or resource busy

    [/code]

Its not a problem with the port becouse i su to root and run wvdial and works ok.

  2. Hi everyone.

Well i have some stuff that i would like to see working or a bit modified, so im going to enumerate them and dont be afraid of answering only one ;) its good enough for me!

    1) I have several "permission denied" problems, and dont get to solve them with the chmod command. for ex. i get the command not found for poweroff, reboot, shutdown -h time and such.. in the other hand, i get Must be superuser with the /sbin/poweroff and i cant get sound working when im in normal mode (user), it gives me this:

** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): Permission denied

thats for the first one! i really would like this one working!

    2) Keeping in mind this is a LFS system:

i would like to update, uninstall and move files around, i usually do the ./configure --prefix=/usr thing so i get everything installed in the /usr dir and not in local or others, as these are compiled from source i was thinking if that means its "kept" in its own directory, i mean, i know it creates some links and docs over there and over here, but the main part where is it?? What i want to do, is to update, for example Gaim, do i uninstall the previous version (and how do i do that?) and compile from scratch the new one, or can i update it somehow (not Gaim in particular, i mean in general, but i know there are exceptions like Mozilla who have some sort of trouble with previous versions so its recommended to uninstall them).

In short, is there any way of uninstalling source compiled soft and/or update it?

    3) I installed XFree4.3 and i have Fluxbox-0.9.4 running as my WM. i really like it, its fast and all. but i have this... "issue" (i dont call it problem becouse im starting to like it!) with my desktop --i think its something with my XFconfig-4--, its like a virtual 1024x768 when the display its actually 800x600 so i have to scroll with the mouse to see al the screen... i hope someone gets the idea... i have two questions for this thing:

    a) Im starting to like to have 1024 of space in my desktop, but what i dont like is that i cant maximize any window without getting it "fully maximized", i mean, it expands trough all the virtual desktop, what i would like to do is to have a "partial maximize" wich would expand it to the current 800x600 screen im seeing --got it? ;)

    B) if the above cant be accomplished how can i make it a normal desktop when i want to? (i mean having the option of switching back and forth)

    4) while im working at making X-Wvdial work, i have a few problems with executing wvdial from a console, the first and most upseting is that i have to be root, or else it will start saying : cant connect to /dev//ttySX several times until i do a CTRL+C, i think this one is related to the audio one...

and the second is, that i cant close the console from where i connected (wvdialed), so, how can i make it dial without me being root and also, someway i dont have to keep a console around..

I think this is something to start with eh? well, i know its a lot, but i really appreciate your help!! .. "im all ears"..

  3. Although its not as complete as i would like to see,

and that (as always in such tests) Linux runs in disadvantage

becouse its never updated from the base install

thought Win always gets its SP1 installed,

and games are always "optimized" for windows,

however, Linux (and its drivers) does quite a good job...

lets hope it only gets better...

  4. Be damn! i just love the effect! (on the pic ;))

I think i will copy and send my self that code so i can try it as soon asi i get back to my Linux Box.

Thanks James! i will have to research a bit to fit it to my liking but i think i will find it very pleasing...

  5. Oh god, im inlove! thnx for the dockapp link! i was eagger for one of those!!

I've been using this devel version since i got LFS - Xfree working, and works flawlessly, except for a strange thing, its constantly throwing errors on VT1, i mean, i use it it works fine and all, but when i exit or do CTRL-ALT-F1 i see plenty of errors/warning most refering to the theme i think... james, what about yours??

  6. Well, actually its for both of them! (MDK and LFS, and might for Arch)

I didnt knew Mandrake had a firewall included (actually, i supposed, with 3 cds is the least they can do! --but didnt know where) so i decided to go look for one.

by upload yours, do you mean, the config files??

well, if you think they have something that can help, i really would like to see it.

Also, if you tell me where i can find it, i will try it. Thnx!

  7. Hey, this would be a POLL if i knew how to make one ;)

This is the list i have:

    1) Kmyfirewall.

    2) Easy Firewall Generator.

    3) Firewall Builder.

    4) Shorewall.

    5) Guarddog.

    6) FireStarter.

    7) Smoothwall.

    8) IPCop.

as far as i know they are front ends to Iptables...

i have heard of some, like Guarddog, but almost anything about the others....

so, what do you think, what do you use? also, give some details on why and so...

  8. Yes they are"!!!

im going to check real good whats going on, anyway, i like using KDE in MDK, and i just do that when i m going to use it for long times, 6-8 hours or more...

But i like playing with my LFS, and once i get everything i want it to have, i guess MDK will be my second distro, for now, i can stand the loading times... there's always something to do!

also im planning on trying SuSE as a friend downloaded the hole FTP tree

    so who knows!?

hey, im thinking about a poll about, how many hours does linux let you sleep 8)

any way, yoper was something like "your own personal distro" , similar...

  9. Hey,

I was going to try the above DNS as they where with the ones i thought i was connected, any way, it seems it works with several DNS, so i called my ISP and asked what where the ones that they knew it should always work, and they gave the 2 of them

So i replaced the others with the ones i got, and everything seems to work.

Now all i have left, is to compile Mozilla, and XWvDial, so i can use them on Fluxbox.

Im not going to do anything on MDK, as i was thinking that i wont be using it in console mode much, so if the need arises, i will try, but for now, im OK.

Thanks very much bvc, i know you sayd it was the DNS and resolv.conf long ago when the problem appeared, but i couldnt understand why, neither i do it now... Mostly due to Kppp working without having one.

I guess that would be all with that.... thnx again.

  10. Hi

My main distro for now, is still MDK9.1, but i like trying everything i can.

So ive tryed MDK91, Slack9, LFS and Arch, and soon i will try SuSE.

i liked all of them, mdk was the first, so it has that special thing of being the oldest (also the one that ¿costed? most to download --dial-- and its pretty customzed...

I was going to try Yopper, but i had such bad comments on them (just like the one above) so i decided to skip it for now, there are plenty of options to replace it ;) just take a look at distrowatch.com

Anyway, although im happy wioth mdk after downloading all those patches and making it sort of stable, im really happy with my LFS, and i think its worth the work, mostly for speed, i have a p3 550@733 and well, heck, KDE on MDK takes about 2 minutes to load and Fluxbox about 30 seconds or maybe a bit more, while my LFS (havent tryed KDE yet, due to the big packages) with fluxbox takes about 4-5 secs to load.

Also is nice to have everything compiled and optimized at full speed for your hard.

anyway, if you want some hard work, but a real nice feeling when done, go with LFS.

otherwise, try Arch, altough its young its very promising, and without ppl helping in what is wrong or what can be better, there is no way for improvement. so, give it a try, also its optimized for i686, and speed, is always welcome.

  11. Hi bvc.

    well,

as i sayd before its actually a peer DNS, so

the server has to send them and then somehow, the conection begins to use them

    on mandrake my

    /etc/resolv.conf

    says the following

    domain localdomain              #kppp temp entry

    nameserver 200.45.191.35        #kppp temp entry

    nameserver 200.45.191.40        #kppp temp entry

the one on /etc/ppp does not have the kppp temp comments neither the domain localdomain

so im guessing that i cant get wvdial to work with peer DNS...

    but why!

well, im going to try those address, and see.

also im going to see if i can get some static DNS.

i will post later. thnx for the help

  12. Here is all the information i could find in my system refering to the

problem im having with wvdial. For what i see, it should be working.

But it isnt, after running "wvdial", i get that pin # thing, and thats

it, so i try to use a browser, and it says it "cant find the host"

the first i had for console was Lynx, now i downloaded

-links, elinks, dillo- to see if it was a browser problem,

it wasnt, or all of them suffer of the same illness ;)

So, i hope all this compilation of information helps and someone can see

    where i screwed up...

I have this problem with Mandrake also, but i didnt had all this info at that point.

With mandrake it goes even further, becouse i had to copy the wvdial.conf file to it

from the LFS system becouse MDKs wvdialconf didnt even find the modem

  13. Sorry to double post,

im posting my config files so you can check them.

    wvdial.conf

    [Dialer Defaults]

           Modem = /dev/ttyS0

           Baud = 57600

           Init1 = ATZ

           Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0

           #Init2 = AT S11=50

           Init3 = ATM0

           Auto DNS = on

           Modem Type = Analog Modem

           Phone = myispphone

           Username = myusername

           Password = mypass

           Stupid mode = yes

Well as you see, i have 2 init2 thats becouse i dont know all the AT commands and well, the first one is the autogenerated, and the second is the one on the man pages as example.

with both of them, works until the pin#.

Also i have tryed with and without the stupid mode, and the Auto DNS, that i must say, it doesnt recognize it as a option like the rest of them (color coding)

    --

    also, my resolv.conf is empy.

    no lines at all, zero.

i didnt know how to try that suggestion about

    search mylinuxisp

and do you think i should ask for some ISP DNS??

becouse, Kppp is working, and i didnt set any other option besides the ones i did with wvdial.

...i need my console online... well... actually, i want my console online... ;)

    thnx for the help.

  14. Hey bvc.

I tryed that, in all posible combinations for this 2 days...

    without any positive results...

I was thinking if it may not be a lynx problem...??

but it works offline, so i dont know.

the thing goes like this, i do wvdial and then it works like i sayd.

    till the pin thing.

then it just stays there, so i go to another console

and open lynx, by default it tryes to go to its homepage.

but its instantly, that i do the lynx ENTER thing, and

it displays it self with a couldnt connect to host site!

or something similar. but it does it as soon as i press ENTER

so i was thinking if this damn thing is actually checking if im online....

    any ideas?

  15. Hey,

I like Fluxbox, im currently using it on my LFS, becouse its light and fast. Also, its almost no-dependable so, you can have it without almost any dep-problems.

Also as mentioned, Enlightenment its pretty good, actually its the "prettiest" of them all...

the CVS version is the pre 0.17 wich is supposed to be a DE from now on.

Also XFCE is going to get the DE title in its next version, for what i read.

Anyway, for heavy GUI i like KDE, its very complete, and i like loading all kind of applets and extension bars...

And like i sayd, when i want something fast and light, Fluxbox... Also there are plenty of plugins and such...

  16. Well, actually, i have dynamic DNS, so i dont specify any, what i do is to add this lines to options under /etc/ppp/options

    lock

    noauth

    noipdefault

    usepeerdns

the first one i dont know what is for (i didnt added it) , then the 2nd is for no authorization required, the 3rd for dynamic IP and the 4th for dynamic DNS

I dont know if its called dynamic DNS but i know that my ISP doesnt use an exclusive one and i dont have to set one.

the problem is, if wvdial uses this options file or it doesnt? kppp does.

  17. Well, thanks for the tip. I will make good use of it,

The problem i had was that i want to make some of the RPMDrake updates concerning security and bugs issues in the future ( i hope they will keep releasing packages for 9.1 fixing and updating...a question about this, would be necesary to install 9.2 when it cames out? or im going to be able to update the packages i want trough Mandrake Update???)

By the way when i have a specific package that i want i use urpmi. But for system files..nope.

  18. Hi all,

well, i have been trying to use wvdial (so i can conect outside X) and well, i dont seem to make it work, i mean, i made all the configuration needed, the modem is detected, the program works i mean, it says calling, dials ok, sends user ok, sends pass ok, but then, says"iniciating pppd" and thats it, then shows a "pid --a number--" , and its connected, (i checked when i do CTRL-C it disconects with a "!trying to quit nicely" or something like that and the modem goes "TIK" so it gets disconected....

The problem is, that after the "pid #" it doesnt allow me to browse... or at least LYNX does not detect the conection.

    If anyone can help!!

  19. Just my opinion

I think its fare to release a new version, when is actually the 9.1 updated.

I have dial-up and damn i did a huge effort to get the 3cds, and then the updates i thought were necesary, (or affordable due to bandwidth) and now they are releasing these same thing under the 9.2 name just becouse they fixed WAY TOO MUCH stuff.

And i agree with this becouse of the same reason im angry for, and that reason is that i would like --being a user of another distro or whatever-- to download a working version and not the download-install and dowload-again-all-the-patches that i got.

I mean, why did they released 9.1 in first place if it was in such a bad shape?

At least with 9.2 new users (or ppl how can/want to download all the 3cds again) can enjoy some sort of stability/security---

Any way, im happy with my MDK, its has been working flawlessly till now, but as i sayd i had downloaded the +200mb in updates i though necesary.

Also i think it would be fare enough for all of us (9.1) users, if at least they gave a save downloaded updates option and not an instant delete of those hundreds of precious MB.

Im actually doing the copy-before-this-thing-deletes-them thingy. and im not happy with it, i cant be waiting until it downloads all the packages and then copy them as fast as i can before it erases them. At least not with dialup....

  20. Hey, well, im actually a member of two!.-

    www.cafelug.org.ar

    and

    www.gupos.com.ar

and i thinks its pretty cool to be a member of a LUG, its like this forum, but with ppl.. yeah i know you --including me-- dont like live interaction, but hey! we are humans after all.

Also, a couple of weeks ago there was a Open Source Jornades (i dont know if thats the correct translation, but well) and Miguel de Icaza came to talk.. it was pretty good...

  21. Hey, Im using the optimizations for my Linux from scratch, but i have a Pentium 3. so i made a couple of changes, here is how i do it

    $ export CFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -O3 -ffast-math -funroll-loops -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -msse -mfpmath=sse"

    $ CXXFLAGS=$CFLAGS

    (the $ is your....that.)

But be aware, when you optimize a program --depending on what you do-- it may or may not work on another PC, so if you are thinking on cross compiling, read the instructions..

Another warning, as you see i renamed de -march flag to my corresponding procesor, also i took off -malign-double becouse it implies some things that may make a loss of performance, so read carefully the GCC_Optimization document posted above....

And last but not least, this flags, at least for what i know (and thats not much!) are only for compiling programs from SOURCE, not already compiled (like RPM or Debian or whatever kind of "package"), generally, you get sources in a "whatever.tar.gz" or "whatever2.tar.bz2" then you decompress it and compile it...

well hope it helps a bit

    cya around

  22. mmmm....crap.... it just crossed my mind that you might (ed?) be using the old couple of files...

Well i can think of this:

try running glxinfo in a console, for what i saw in the frame rates you have (damn, yours is broken and throws twice FPS than mine ;)) the drivers seem to work ok, at least the GL part of it.

Im adding mine so you can compare it may help...

if everything seems to be ok, it may not be the drivers... but some sort of misconfiguration.. no?-

    :wq!

  23. Hi everyone...

Now that i have my system running nice and smooth....

well, i would like to ask someything about partimage, and its seems this is the thread for it!

Does partimage only do an image of a partition (yeah its a dumb question) or can i make it do an image of the-important-file-system-tree...??

I mean, i dont want to burn 2 or 3 cds just for a backup, i have plenty of wasted MB on different stuff, including not wanted stuff, i want "the files that matter" backedup... its MCC backup utility better for this?

    Thanks in advance.
