  1. But I had odd problems with supermount on, particularly when I was installing software. I use urpmi in a console, and with supermount on, it would spend several minutes checking my cdrom drives before installing.

I had the same problem while updating in MCC, but now I insert a CD beforehand and it's much faster! :)

  2. The magazine Linux Format is pretty good for that in the UK, AFAIK it's also available in Australia and the US as an import (read expensive).

As a newbie, I found it a bit heavy going. My local W H Smith has several linux mags now, including Linux Magazine (http://www.linux-magazine.com) which seems quite newbie-friendly.

I see there is also a US Linux Magazine (no relation, apparently) which seems to be at about the same level (http://www.linux-mag.com).

Click on the current issues for a taster. :)

    No free distro tho'... :(

  3. Found this interesting link on PCLinuxOnline - http://www.divisiontwo.com/articles/barbieOS.htm

Mattel's Chief Software Architect, Maury Cesterino:

"Most girls up through adult women become frightened and confused, often hysterical when presented with a traditional command prompt," Cesterino explained, "therefore the console program available through the B-Menu in BarbieOS features pink text on a flowered background..."

    Order early for Christmas! :)

  4. See http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=8177

In its plenary vote on the 24th of September, the European Parliament approved the proposed directive on "patentability of computer-implemented inventions" with amendments that clearly restate the non-patentability of programming and business logic, and uphold freedom of publication and interoperation
"With the new provisions of article 2, a computer-implemented invention is no longer a trojan horse, but a washing machine", explains Erik Josefsson from SSLUG and FFII...
  5. I haven't used this myself , but according to the CUPS users manual http://localhost:631/sum.html, the following can be used to change your margins -

    lpr -o page-top=value filename ENTER

    lpr -o page-left=value filename ENTER

I suppose the above could mess up your settings in applications, so perhaps you could set up a specific printer instance -

    lpoptions -p laserjet/lprtext -o page-top=value ENTER

    lpoptions -p laserjet/lprtext -o page-left=value ENTER

    lpr -P laserjet/lprtext filename ENTER

    Hope this helps. :)

  6. I really don't want to give BT any more money, any suggestions for a reasonably priced alternative?

PlusNet is great value for money, and I've had no problems with them. Their standard home account offers lots of features for £21.99; but you can get Homesurf for £18.99! :)

Here is a comparison with their main rivals:

    http://www.plus.net/info2/compare/competit...re_res_dsl.html

BTW I bought an Alcatel Speedtouch because I wasn't sure their modem would work with Linux.

  7. If you have enabled your Shorewall firewall (as you should), that may be the problem. You have to download sample files from their website www.shorewall.net, and tweak them before it works properly.

First, disable the firewall temporarily via MCC/Security/Firewall to see if the modem works then.

  8. In that case...

i knew what you meant by spanish inquisition (i've seen monty python and also history of the world) i just didn't understand how it applied here ;-)

It didn't apply here - it's just a device for getting into the sketch. The point was that the Inquisition was unexpected - it interrupted a sketch where Yorkshiremen were discussing "one on't cross beams gone owt askew on treadle".

    A non-sequitar. :)

  9. besides, i was looking for comments on the linux write up ;-)  .

Sorry...but then I do have the attention span of a.... erm...

i might whiten (er, lighten?) the "cracked screen" affect a bit, so it's not so obtrusive.

I think the motion is also a problem... how about a watermark?

I will now shut up... (sidles off to the offtopic discussion)

  10. Thanks for the tips. I didn't realise how delicate these screens were when I bought it!

Does Hansol offer a screen protector? My particular Viewsonic offered one at extra cost which I purchased.

I wasn't offered one and there's no mention on their website (or anywhere else). Can you get generic ones? :)

  11. What's the best way to clean my Hansol TFT LCD screen? There's nothing in the manual or on the Hansol website about cleaning.

I've seen these mentioned: cleaning wipes and Mr Sheen (window cleaner); paper towel and soapy water; lint-free cloths; isopropyl alcohol; anti-static cloths; proprietary stuff like Klear Screen.

Unfortunately, each recommendation seems to warn of dire consequences if you use any of the others. Any suggestions?

  12. If you wanted to confuse everybody by registering under two names, it worked for me! :)

Seriously, was there an error message as well as the error 16?

I'm at work on Windows at the moment, so I can't check it out. I expect somebody will give you an answer before I get home.
