Stateful firewalling included in the 2.4 kernel. :)
This article gives a basic explanation of how it works...

Try here...
This list is not exhaustive. If you can't find somewhere near, try www.google.com/linux and search for LUG and your locality... :)

The magazine Linux Format is pretty good for that in the UK, AFAIK it's also available in Australia and the US as an import (read expensive).
As a newbie, I found it a bit heavy going. My local W H Smith has several linux mags now, including Linux Magazine (http://www.linux-magazine.com) which seems quite newbie-friendly.
I see there is also a US Linux Magazine (no relation, apparently) which seems to be at about the same level (http://www.linux-mag.com).
Click on the current issues for a taster. :)
No free distro tho'... :(

Found this interesting link on PCLinuxOnline - http://www.divisiontwo.com/articles/barbieOS.htm
Mattel's Chief Software Architect, Maury Cesterino:
"Most girls up through adult women become frightened and confused, often hysterical when presented with a traditional command prompt," Cesterino explained, "therefore the console program available through the B-Menu in BarbieOS features pink text on a flowered background..."
Order early for Christmas! :)

Can't recommend anything personally, but http://lintraining.com lists lots of LPI certified training centres, including several in South Africa. :)

See http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=8177
In its plenary vote on the 24th of September, the European Parliament approved the proposed directive on "patentability of computer-implemented inventions" with amendments that clearly restate the non-patentability of programming and business logic, and uphold freedom of publication and interoperation"With the new provisions of article 2, a computer-implemented invention is no longer a trojan horse, but a washing machine", explains Erik Josefsson from SSLUG and FFII... -
I haven't used this myself , but according to the CUPS users manual http://localhost:631/sum.html, the following can be used to change your margins -
lpr -o page-top=value filename ENTER
lpr -o page-left=value filename ENTER
I suppose the above could mess up your settings in applications, so perhaps you could set up a specific printer instance -
lpoptions -p laserjet/lprtext -o page-top=value ENTER
lpoptions -p laserjet/lprtext -o page-left=value ENTER
lpr -P laserjet/lprtext filename ENTER
Hope this helps. :)

oh man - don't stop there! I've been readin through this post - willing Brit to get everything working (kind of like some geeky movie where Brit is the hero(heroine?))
I know what you mean. I've been pacing up and down outside the delivery room...
Hang on in there, Sue!

Thanks, pmpatrick, for that clear explanation. :)

I really don't want to give BT any more money, any suggestions for a reasonably priced alternative?
PlusNet is great value for money, and I've had no problems with them. Their standard home account offers lots of features for £21.99; but you can get Homesurf for £18.99! :)
Here is a comparison with their main rivals:

BTW I bought an Alcatel Speedtouch because I wasn't sure their modem would work with Linux.

The PCLinuxOnline daily summary has a story about a venture capital company investing in Microsoft, SCO and Drugstore.com (director: Melinda French Gates)...
I don't follow it all, as I'm a simple public sector worker :) but it looks fishy to me.
Perhaps someone with financial/business background can tell us what it means? :?

If you have enabled your Shorewall firewall (as you should), that may be the problem. You have to download sample files from their website www.shorewall.net, and tweak them before it works properly.
First, disable the firewall temporarily via MCC/Security/Firewall to see if the modem works then.

A man with three buttocks? :?

In that case...
i knew what you meant by spanish inquisition (i've seen monty python and also history of the world) i just didn't understand how it applied here ;-)It didn't apply here - it's just a device for getting into the sketch. The point was that the Inquisition was unexpected - it interrupted a sketch where Yorkshiremen were discussing "one on't cross beams gone owt askew on treadle".
A non-sequitar. :)

It's just that I've taken your thread off topic and when I try to stop, you ask me a question.
I must be in a silly mood. :?
-
Sorry, I'm showing my age. At one time, it was difficult to have a conversation without quoting Monty Python. :)
-
This is my last comment (no, really!).
I admire the skill involved... but do you want visitors to admire the special effects and forget the text?
If you must answer this, don't ask me any more questions! I didn't expect a kind of Spanish Inquisition...

besides, i was looking for comments on the linux write up ;-) .
Sorry...but then I do have the attention span of a.... erm...
i might whiten (er, lighten?) the "cracked screen" affect a bit, so it's not so obtrusive.I think the motion is also a problem... how about a watermark?
I will now shut up... (sidles off to the offtopic discussion)

It does make it hard to read the text as I'm distracted as I scroll... but then I do have the attention span of a.... erm...
Could you decorate the side panels instead? Nothing ostentatious! Just a little colour, perhaps...
-
I think it looks very professional... but I do find the 'cracked screen' effect a bit annoying! :)

Thanks for the tips. I didn't realise how delicate these screens were when I bought it!
Does Hansol offer a screen protector? My particular Viewsonic offered one at extra cost which I purchased.I wasn't offered one and there's no mention on their website (or anywhere else). Can you get generic ones? :)
-
What's the best way to clean my Hansol TFT LCD screen? There's nothing in the manual or on the Hansol website about cleaning.
I've seen these mentioned: cleaning wipes and Mr Sheen (window cleaner); paper towel and soapy water; lint-free cloths; isopropyl alcohol; anti-static cloths; proprietary stuff like Klear Screen.
Unfortunately, each recommendation seems to warn of dire consequences if you use any of the others. Any suggestions?

If you wanted to confuse everybody by registering under two names, it worked for me! :)
Seriously, was there an error message as well as the error 16?
I'm at work on Windows at the moment, so I can't check it out. I expect somebody will give you an answer before I get home.

I had the same problem while updating in MCC, but now I insert a CD beforehand and it's much faster! :)
