  1. I have to post once again: number 1000 in Art & Design

That was my turn! :cheeky: Yes, that's better.

It seems to be a feature of this board that when you quote my posts, it uses your time zone... My quotes are later than your posts...

  2. Mandrake have survived due to the loyalty of folks like me and you while driving off the genius's like texstar ....
Other commercial distro's like Lycoris/Xandros have built easy wizards into the control Centre.  This to me is much more preferable to putting them into the seperate control centre which seems to be aiming to be a poor mans YAST.

Just as an aside, Texstar has recently written a rave review of Xandros.

I'm really pleased with Xandros 2.0, I've tweaked it to my liking (...) and it's going to replace my previous favorite (Libranet) and stay on my desktop.  Xandros is smooth, clean and polished and is the only version of Linux that I've tried so far that I feel is a complete Linux desktop solution, it just works!  It's a mature Linux and ready for the masses.
  3. Thanks for the prompt upgrade - it seems to have solved the problem, and speeded things up.

Unfortunately, a feature that had gone away seems to be back: after being logged in for a few hours, and having read most of the new posts, the new post indicators have been reset for all the threads I've read.

I can live with this if necessary of course, but is there a patch you can apply?

  4. This PCLinuxOnline article is entitled 'Can Linux Save IT Jobs in America?', but should interest non-Americans too.

IBM clones (Compaq, Dell, Gateway) with Windows operating system is what made Microsoft its fortune and also made the desktop computer affordable for the individual. Linux Clones will make the PC affordable again for corporate America and will afford them to keep their American IT staff.
  5. I know nothing about chipsets, but the Italian link mentions the ITEX chipset. On Linux.com, I found this:

IteX PCI ADSL modem based on the Apollo chipset, also sold under various other brand names such as Dlink and ALH110. http://www.itexinc.com/.

The Itex site has nothing about drivers, in fact the company has recently gone into liquidation...

Hope someone can use this information...

  6. I find the file Attachment part AOK as you directed but for the life of me I can't find the  EDIT to click on anywhere on the page...

I think he's referring to the Report Edit Quote tabs on your original post. :)

  7. You can disable supermount -

    supermount -i disable

but you'll then have to mount and unmount your cds manually. You can do this from the command line using mount & umount; or you can use KwikDisk. KwikDisk can be added to the taskbar (right click on taskbar; Add/Application Button/Configuration/Hardware/KwikDisk) and then you can tick/untick the cdrom as required.

If you want to keep supermount, just pop a cd in the drive whenever the chugging is likely to start.

Welcome to the board, by the way. :)

  8. The shorewall configuration files that come with Mandrake don't work for everyone. Shorewall recommend that you download sample files from their website and tweak them.

I'm told the instructions are easy to follow, but I reverted to using iptables itself... :)

  9. In a way, Iraq is a free country now and all sanctions has been lifted sometime ago.

This letter to the US Department of Commerce from the Silicon Valley LUG dated 9 December 2003, explains how proprietary software has been exempted but open-source has not. See paras 9 & 10 ("It is important to note that proprietary...").

  10. The Linux Journal has a report from Adam Davidson of Minnesota Public Radio on Iraq's first Linux User Group.

You could help by emailing a few URLs or offering to provide tech support or help in developing their website. Or you can mail them books, periodicals, and CDs. Or you can send them money, so they can fulfill their ambition to create Iraq's first Linux Center to demonstrate and train.

They prefer Mandrake because it's easy to install and use and Arabbix, because it's a bootable CD, based on Knoppix, that's in Arabic. But they're open to suggestions.

Apparently, trade sanctions still bar US residents from sending current distributions to Iraq...

  11. I don't speak Spanish, but this is a plain English version of the translation...

"I have a Aopen AK-77 8XN board with chipset KT400. Since I installed MDK 9.2 (and now cooker), when I switch on the PC, it can go into power saving mode during normal use, even while I am keying in, playing games, whatever. Pressing any key returns it to normal. It mainly happens when I first switch on, for no more than about 30 minutes (when it can happen 3/5 times). Usually it happens until the PC is rebooted. Any idea what it can be? Thanks"

Apologies to any translators out there - you can deal with the replies... :cheeky:

Perhaps a mod could give this an English sub-title? 'KT400 power saving activates prematurely'?

  12. I'm posting this link to keep people informed, but if everyone already reads The Register, then there's not much use to, is there? So, do you read 'El Reg'?

I read it and post links occasionally.

A lot of board users won't be visiting the Register or similar sites every day, so it's easy to miss something interesting.

    Keep posting! :)
