  1. It isn't a BIOS issue, as far as I could tell. The BIOS recognized the 160GB HDD and Harddrake allowed me to partition it to 160GB. However, once I tried to put anything on it, I ran into the problem on it only showing 700MB. I used 'df' and the same result...700MB.
  2. I have a successful implementation with http requests a proxy, however, ftp requests do not work. I am using NetProxy 4.03 on a WinXP box with an ftp gateway on port 21. However, when I try to access any ftp site on MDK 9.2, I get a response that the server name could not be resolved. As I said http works fine. I have set the ftp proxy in KDE to ftp://192.168.0.1 and even tried it with the http:// prefix. Where am I going wrong?

    gkrellweather

I have recently installed Gkrellweather and configured it according to the recommendation in this topic. However, the machine it is on connects to the internet through a proxy. Gkrellweather never updates and when I do a basic 'GrabWeather CYOW', I get - 500 Can't connect to weather.noaa.gov:80 (Bad Hostname 'weather.noaa.gov') at /usr/bin/GrabWeather line 51 It seems that I cannot connect by ftp through my proxy even though the ftp port is enabled. Any ideas on how to access the GrabWeather through http?
  4. I am having a similar problem that I have had in the past, in that I cannot connect to the internet with XMLTV. I have tried using a dialup connection but even though I connect, I cannot surf using the direct connection. I have even set the network setting in Configuration-KDE-Network Proxy to direction connection and still nothing. Additionally, XMLTV states that the grab function can be done through a proxy. I have set the Konqueror, Galeon and KDE network proxy settings to the proxy server I have and XMLTV still doesn't connect. I have exported the HTTP_PROXY setting in the .bash_profile file as well. Still no connection. This is not to say that I don't have the ability to connection to the net through the proxy. I can get my mail, and surf using Konqueror or Galeon and am even doing Folding@Home through the proxy. Any idea of how to setup the http_proxy environment variable and or allow surfing by my KPPP?
  5. Thanks for the replies. The 160GB HDD did not need any special jumper settings to be able to be recognized. It's just set as the primary slave on the Mobo IDE controller. I am using an ECS K7S5A Pro board. Out of the box doesn't support 160GB drives, however an updated BIOS version did. I flashed my new BIOS and the BIOS recognizes the 160GB drive. In MDK 9.2, diskdrake sees the whole drive and allows me to make a full 160GB partition. However, when the partition was mounted, I get a total of 700MB. It seems at the BIOS level and on the partition table it is all fine and recognized. It seems to be at the diskspace level that there are problems. At the moment I'll live with the two partitions, but it is annoying to not be able to have the drive fully supported. :(
  6. This 160GB drive is not the system drive, that is /dev/hda. This drive is to be used for video capture and TV recording, as the 2 x 30GBs I had just weren't big enough. I see no reason for the issue with 160GB, but I know what I was given...700MB :(
  7. Is there any support for 160GB HDD in 9.2? My ESC K7S5A has had its BIOS updated to recognize and accept this size of drive and even Diskdrake allows me to make a partition that big and format it. However, I get out of space errors on the drive with anything more than 700MB? And using "df" I get that it only has a size of 700MB. Any ideas on what can be done if anything? I prefer to keep it all as one partition.
  8. I have recently acquired a SB Live 5.1, mainly to give me noise free recording that the on-board sound or a SB Ensoniq PCI was giving me. It does, so I am happy. Now I would like to use some of the capabilities of the SB Live 5.1. I have a second set of powered speakers and I wanted to hook them up to the rear speaker connector. Now in KMix under MDK 9.2, there are about 30 items that can be turned on or adjusted. I can get the main speakers the way I want them, but have yet to get the rear speakers to make a sound. Does anyone have an example of what they have turned on in KMix and to what level? Kevin
  9. I've just finished upgrading my KDE 3.0.3 to KDE 3.1.1a by doing a compilation install. I have tried numerous times in the past to upgrade my KDE 3.0.x to 3.1.x but have never been successful due to missing dependencies. I find it funny that the whenever I've looked for KDE 3.1 RPMs for MDK 9.0, that I can never install them. There is always a circle of missing RPMs which is different than the Out-of-the-Box 9.0. This shouldn't be if I understand. Anyways, I got fed up and used the KDE 3.1.1a source files from the latest Linux Format DVD and compiled and installed them. Now that I have KDE 3.1.x running, I would like to clean up my drive a bit by removing some of the old KDE 3.0.3 files. However, I just can't remove the files without another circle of dependencies being broken. Does anyone have any ideas about removing the old KDE 3.0.3 files without leaving a huge hole in the RPM structure from just deleting the files. BTW, I can't upgrade to MDK 9.1 as it does not allow the use of my ATI All-in-Wonder card. The GCC 3.x compilers still have issues which cause problems with the drivers done for 2.9x compilers.
  10. Actually, to tell you the truth, I've never used ATITV successfully. I tried almost 2 years ago, then got on the Gatos forums and found the most up to date software. Using ATITV is like using a 2.0 kernel. ATITV was likely not compiled with the MDK 9.1 kernel, XF86 4.3 or the GCC 3.2x. I recommend going to the gatos.sourceforge.net site and getting the ati.2 drivers. You can then use the standard xawtv to view the TV. There is more than the ati.2 drivers at the Gatos site, if you want more than just TV viewing. Kevin
  11. I finally got it working. I removed every last possible reference to sane or scanning and then compiled and installed the latest files from the sane site. A few tweaks and then off to the races. Thanks for the help! Kevin
  12. I finished checking the recommendations. The /dev/usb/scanner0 is there. I checked to see if the sane daemon was running. It seems it isn't. When I run saned, it runs and then closes. I am going to download an older version of sane and try again.
  13. I have seen many posts on getting USB scanners to work and the problems that Scannerdrake has when configuring a scanner. I feel my problems are classic, but it seems that fixing them have not been as simple. My scanner is recognized as a USB device, the scanner modules are properly loaded, if I use SANE-FIND-SCANNER, it will find the scanner but when I try to use any application that accesses the scanner, they all say that no SANE devices have been found. I have checked in the 'snapscan.conf' file and made sure that the device was pointed to the /dev/usb/scanner0 device. I have done the recommended firmware uplaod and I have compiled and installed the newest sane backend. Neither Xsane and scanimage find any SANE devices. Any ideas?
  14. Yes the viewer that comes with GATOS is AVView. ATITV is very old and there have been many improvements since that time.
  15. Good Day, I've been using the Gatos drivers for my AIW Rage 128 Pro (plus an older AIW 'Classic'. Gatos typically uses /dev/video0 as its main device. It is likely that you will have to create the /dev/video0 yourself. I do not know what version you are using of Gatos, but it is best to get the most up to date from the gatos.sourceforge.net site. The files you'll need for tuner support is 'ati.2'. You'll have to pick from the list as there are different versions compiled for the various XFree86 versions. These files are normally just untarred into the /usr/X11R6 directories overwriting your default XF86 drivers (remember to backup the original directory). From there you should have direct access to the tuner from Xawtv. I recommend against trying to get the AIW to work on MDK9.1. I have tried in vain as there is a conflict between the compiler (GCC) used by MDK and the one used for Gatos. It works great with MDK 9.0. Now, there are a few other hints for you. If you want video capture as well, you'll need the 'km' code which needs to be compiled and installed. If you want a GUI to capture with and access the TV and tuner, you'll need AVView. All the instructions for installation are on the gatos site. Lastly, do not be surprised if it seems that Gatos will not work with most TV and capture applications. It will currently only work (some with partial functionality) with Avview, Xawtv and mp1e. This is because most V4L applications have implemented the tuner coding based on an improper implementation of V4L in the BT848(?) tuner chipset. Unfortunately, this is the most prevalent tuner chip around and most apps were written to it. Gatos was written to work with the chips in the ATI cards which is not the BT848(?). The lead in the project, named Vladimir, has written to the V4L standard as best possible. I hope this helps you. I have been pleasantly surprised at what I can accomplish with Gatos. It may not be as complete at the ATI apps in Windoze, but it is a far cry from not using any of the AIW functionality.
  16. I have had the same problems, though I do not have Windows at all on my machine. With MDK 9.0, whenever I reboot, I lose my mouse, that is the /dev/psaux is not detected. This is consistent, and reproduceable. If I shutdown and restart, no problems. Just rebooting. As you can see from my profile below, I have a completely different system that the originator. By the way, I have tried using both GRUB and LILO and both are the same. I think it has something to do in MDK 9.0 as it never happened with me in MDK 8.0 or 8.2 Kevin Foss Ottawa, Canada
  17. I finally made it work. It seems that during installation, the setup files for kppp, that is the .kppprc files were configured for a local DNS. I just copies a kppprc file from a user that was not created during installation and voila, I can browse the net through my dialup.
  18. I've tried just using kppp and although I can connect and the dialup settings are the same, I cannot browse any websites and the host names cannot be resolved. From what other posters have stated in previous messages, MCC sets up the networking during install and for the most part, it is irreversible. Kevin
  19. I know that this post is similar to a previous post, but I thought I would separate out this question to stand on its own... How can I override the configuration that MCC sets up for my network? Can I somehow remove all profiles and start the network setup from scratch? Kevin Foss Ottawa, Canada
  20. I spent a couple of hours last night trying to get my dialup to work. I went through as many files as I could find under the /etc/sysconfig/network directories and removed/commented out as many instances of Gateway or DNS IP as I could find. Even then if I used KPPP or GnomePPP I get no results as Galeon or Mozilla both state that they cannot resolve the destination host. So I created a new profile under MCC, and funny thing is it looks pretty much the same as the old one. The old profile brought up kppp to dial. The new profile brings up a "network monitoring" window which has a connect modem button. When I used this button I connected and could access the net properly. However this seems really complicated to dial up as it takes 7 clicks to actual start the dialing process. From a human factors point of view that sucks. :( As well, it never was this bad under MDK 8.x What can I do to my system configuration to allow me to dial and surf just by using a dialer like kppp. If we can't use these dialers, why are they in the distro? Kevin Foss Ottawa, Canada
  21. I will try this once I get home to the machine, though I did look last night add there was no gateway entry in the /etc/sysconfig/network file. :( BTW, I also tried setting up a connection through MCC and I still have the same issue. I will reconfirm though. Kevin Foss Ottawa, Canada
  22. I am using MDK9.0 on an AMD XP2000+. I have been having problems with dialup internet. When installing MDK9.0 there is always an issue when configuring the networking as the installer only does one connection. The LAN connection which I set up first requests information which is not valid for our network, such as the default gateway. Now I have setup a Kppp connection to my ISP which uses both automatic IP addressing and automatic DNS provision. I can connect no problems to the ISP but I can never access any sites/servers through my ppp connection. I have been through the /etc/sysconfig/network file and have run netconf to ensure that there are no extra gateway settings. Both Galeon and Mozilla do not allow me access any sites under this setup, as if they are looking for a DNS and never finding one. As a method of troubleshooting I have setup a proxy on a WinXP Pro machine and temporarily run all http/ftp/ssl/pop requests through the proxy and it works fine. Any ideas on where to look for the problem? How can I remove/change the default profile under the Mdk Control Center connection app? Kevin Foss Ottawa, Canada
