Thanks for your quick replies, everyone. I was able to finish I needed to get done. The openasroot-kmenu thing works great as well. However, I found that the gksu command doesn't work. Another question, does kdesu only work with kwrite?

Thanks Greg! The removal process worked perfectly. But since gnash still doesn't display videos properly, I just removed it too and went with the official Adobe Flash-minus-PulseAudio method. Tested out a few videos... nothing so far, hopefully it will stay that way.

Occasionally, in Mandriva 2008 I need to log in as root graphically from my current account that has lower permissions. Sometimes I need to do tasks that I can't do on my normal account, such as removing entries from the GRUB config file if Mandriva decides to add extra entries onto it for some reason, or placing/removing files from protected directories. Yes, I understand the risks with doing things under root, but some things I find would be much easier doing graphically rather than in a console with su.

The thing that frustrates me most about using Linux? Installing and uninstalling programs... :angry2: I decided to keep gnash and uninstall swfdec. I tried, but can't uninstall either of them, as 1) neither shows up in the package manager; 2) can't search for either term in Find Files/Folders, as nothing shows up; and 3) urpmi.removemedia doesn't work. Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks for replying, ffl. Sorry for the long delay in my response, I haven't had the time lately to test the installation procedure. Now that I have, the installation went pretty well. However, when trying to play any videos on YouTube, it causes Firefox to run with so much lag that nothing from the video is displayed. Would this an issue with Gnash, or my computer? EDIT: Tried the 'urpmi gnash-firefox-plugin' method in conjunction with the first one. No more lag, but videos don't play at all now...

Hi, I'm using Mandriva Linux 2008.1 Spring. I have encountered the issue documented here, since going to sites like Youtube will crash any browser I use. I've uninstalled the Adobe Flash plugin, but now I want to install either Gnash or the Swfdec plugin on Firefox. According to both of their sites, they say to install through the package manager. However, through rpmdrake I've only found Swfdec, and it's the standalone player only. So how do I install either of the plugins for Firefox?

I recently reinstalled Windows XP since it reached its "Windows half life". After the reformat, the GRUB screen that lets me choose between Mandriva 2006 installation (yes, I know, it's antiquated) and XP no longer appears, and skips right to loading XP. What's the best way to restore the GRUB screen? Please note that I am willing to lose the data on the Linux partition, but I don't want to unexpectedly erase my XP partition.

:blink: And I thought wasting 4 blank CD-Rs (is that how many I need?) was costly. I only have a CD burner, and blank CDs are becoming more expensive and harder to find than DVDs. I think I may buy a DVD burner first before installing Mandriva. Looks like they're very helpful guides. Thanks!

Hello, My computer currently dual boots Windows XP and Mandriva 2006 through the use of two partitions. I use GRUB as a boot manager. I want to upgrade Mandriva 2006 to 2008, without having to reformat XP. Is it possible to do this? If so, how?

Finallly I got Mandriva working! I just used auto configure, then used the install cds onto hard drive option. I am now using Mandriva right now, although it seems to be a bit laggy at the time. I didn't even need to go through all the steps on that dual-boot thing... GRUB shows both Windows and Linux already, although what does linux-nonfb and failsafe mean?

Thank you for replying, but I'm still having trouble with that method because again, it is for in Linux only. I have tried multiple attempts at it in Windows, but no luck, especially the "$" part, which I don't know what to substitute with. I think it would be wise to just try downloading the isos again and checking those files with the md5sum program and burning at a very low speed. However, I still would like assistance in the installing part. Also, can anyone guess if Mandriva is partially installed on my system, since it went through a fair amount of installation before I had to turn off my computer?

The isos are on the CDs, so I have no idea how to check them. The instructions for checking the md5s are for Linux. How do I get through this?

But I have a few questions: which is the space for other files, such as documents and games (I carved my 80GB hard drive, alotting 50 gigs to Windows, so where do I put the rest of the free space for Linux); does swap have a "/" before it; and how do I do a MD5sum check? I checked its Wikipedia article, I have no idea what to do with the Windows MD5 checker program listed there. Also, I used Fujifilm CD-Rs with jewel cases that I bought in a ten-pack to burn Mandriva discs; I guess yes, 12x is too high, but wasting 3 CDs is just a shame.
