  1. I could add a PCI Lan card if that the only problem... do I install following the normal procedure or are their special instructions.
  2. Ramfree17.... visit ours :) Serve full meals and good coffee. The only game in the shop is the solitaire thing MS bundles with Windows :)
  3. While we were preparing to add a few Linux machines... well we wound up investing on Windows XP with OpenOffice instead. A Intenet Cafe named Super Lolo ("Super Grandfather) in the Philippines went all Linux :) (proud) and :( (not us---too chicken) Distro of choice: Mandrake 9.1
  4. I upgraded to a NForce 2 baord (MSI K7N2 Delta-L)... I just wanted to know if I should expect any complication installing RedHat 9.
  5. Microsoft are apparently selling Windows XP and Office for almost nothing in Thailand. A bundle price of $35 for Windows XP & Office suite. Looks like someone is getting worried ;)
  6. gnome/bluecurve is still my favorite...
  7. Actually, this is our second Linux distro ;) The first was based on RH7 and called Bayanihan Linux...
  8. Hhhhhmmm... looks like I would have to pick the same raid level for both even if windows and linux use different raid drivers :( Anyone ever try this.
  9. I have an 8K9A2+ mobo with IC 372 Highpoint RAID controllers and two Maxtor 30GB DiamondMax Plus8 . Highpoint recently released RedHat 8/9 drivers icon_smile.gif So I decided to do a dual boot DUAL RAID install icon_smile.gif I plan to partition the Disks into three: 40% NTFS 20% FAT32 40% ext3 Install Win2K in the NTFS partition running RAID 0 (stripping) than install RedHat 9 into the ext3 partition running RAID 1. Before I do this I wanted to know if it is feasible. If not I will install Win2K w/o raid and run RAID 1 with RedHat 9.

    When adding more RAM...

Doesn't Linux create a partition /swap, the size of which is dependent on how much RAM you have installed. Could the problem lie there?
  11. By the way if I dual boot Windows 2000 and Linux can I put Linux in the first partition.
  12. It's a bit more complicated now. I have decided to upgrade the mobo too and sold my 8K9A and replaced it with an 8K9A2+ . I think they are dumping these ones these days since the KT400A is coming... and I got it cheap :) So now I am going to try to Dual Boot with RAID 1 for both windows and linux. Luckily Highpoint now was RH9 drivers.
  13. Well, thats whats been working for me for the past year... but I am going to have Linux (and its own partitions) in the last 25% or the HD. :(
  14. Can't keep the 10 Gig drive. Need it for another PC. How about: Part 1: Windows Part 2: Linux Part 3: FAT32 Partt 4: FAT32 I like to keep data on a separate partition from the OS so when I reformat, I only reformat the partition with the OS.
  15. Have been running Linux dual boot with WIn98 for a year on my old 10GB HD, which is partioned into 2 equal halves.... Win98 on C and Linux on the second partition. Yesterday I got a 40GB HD and plan to partition it into 4 equal partitions. Windows will go on the first partion, where should I place Linux?
  16. "A windows user switching becuase of licencing, activation or general public good will be detered by the inference that they then pay for more things. " Have to agree. I still use RH9... and will continue to use RH I guess. Will buy a boxed copy every now and than and use RH demo (survey are short enough) and agt-get to keep up to date. Licensing costs vary from country to country... where I am though right now, Windows with OpenOffice looks cheaper if going the paid route. Every new machine we get can come with WindowsXP Home at $80 or XP Pro at $135. Mandrake or RedHat will cost me $60 a year or nothing at all (for now at least, but dont knwo how long this will last)... If they are willing to give it for free... why cant I have a boxed version for $50-$100 with 3 years of ptach support. Why is it free or $180 or higher for 3 years patch support... (and requires that a install a completely new version every year to 18 months to get continued support). I guess its cheaper to go Linux on servers and similar stuff.
  17. Looks like there is a new kid on the block; http://www.linuxandmain.com/modules.php?na...article&sid=351
  18. I use OpenOffice... but I am qualifying my vote. I think MSOffice is still the best office suit available... I just don't think its worth the money. I don't think it is possible to supplant MSOffice completely in a public environment yet (Internet Cafe), but we use OpenOffice in 70% of our PC's and MSOffice in 30% without hurting our bottom line. In a "close" (he he) enviroment... I think OpenOffice can replace MSOffice 100% of the time with the warning that documents you send to MSOffice users may have formatting problems.
  19. In my case, I need something that can search use to read the *.NFO where all the cases are stored. In Windows, it used Folio Bound VIews.
  20. Thats the part I don't get. Linux is supposed to be cheaper, but if I want a RedHat Linux Enterprise Worstation and three years patch support I need to shell out $179 per seat. Win2000 I can get got $80 and get update and patch support till 2007. Savigns can be had by using the free or perosal editions, but those porducts are being curtailed little by little.
  21. JaseP, is correct. In general I (a trial lawyer) do all my work in Linux. But my database of cases only runs on Windows. So while Linux has its advantages, it also as its disadvantages. Unfortuantely, some of these disavantages are show stoppers for now.
  22. Well not like this one.... but you might want to check out http://www.linuxiso.org/forums/
  23. I don't know JaseP. $10 is pretty thin. Migration cost a lot.
  24. "does not have txt " I am with you there. I heard a lot about Linux bein used by companies for thigns like this. Can't wait to see them when they come out. I think the Palm's already have some.
