  1. Found this on an ubuntu forum. . . now if I can just find my kernel source. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvNetInstallation
  2. Sounds good. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.
  3. so I need to have a NIC to install that has drivers that work? unfortunate.
  4. Ok, did that . . . saw some nvidia legacy kernels. . . but they were compiled for mine. Didn't see "source" kernel. Any other places they might be? Is this what I am looking for? ftp://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake/2006...86_64.delta.rpm
  5. I am running the 2.6.12-12mdk. Should the source files be on the install discs? Or do I need to download them? If they are on the source disk, I am assuming I can install from the MCC? Thanks!
  6. I got the drivers from nvidia. . . http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_...4_1.0-0310.html I figured out how to run the shell script (./name of file) Now I am running into the problem of the driver install package wants to recompile my kernel (scary!!!) and is looking for some source files? Not really sure what that means or how I can help out the installer. . . it fails once it recognizes I don't have these source files. Here's what the documentation says . . . The installer contains pre-built drivers for major Linux distributions. In the event that the installer cannot find a pre-built driver for your kernel, the installer will attempt to build the driver. In this case, it is necessary to install the kernel source corresponding to the kernel for which the driver will be installed for. My distro is Mandriva 2006 Discovery. . . not sure where I can find the source or where I should put it?
  7. So I just got Mandriva 2006 up and running, looks like most of my hardware was detected, even the SATA III drive. But my networking (sigh) does not work. I have the integrated Nvidia nForce 430 chipset that has a gigabit controller on there. I downloaded the appropriate drivers, but they are .run shell scripts and I have no clue what to do with these (total noob). Any suggestions? I would also love to know what to do once the hardware is configured. Thanks!
  8. Not sure how I know if its "serial" its a PCI card. . . also how do I determine what the ttySX number is? Thanks!
  9. I still don't understand where I find a driver for this modem that is supposedly "Mandrake" certified? Anyone have this modem? I am a complete noob so I am not even sure if I know how to load the driver/module when I find it.
  10. So I couldn't figure out my existing modem and how to get it working in Mandriva. . . so I bought a new hardware modem. 1x #NSPIRE 536EP/4743 Nspire Modem Intel chipset V92 Data fax Voice 56K PCI Now, even though its says supports Mandrake 9.2, I can't seem to find a driver for it, nor do I know how to install. Anyone?
  11. I solved it! Here is what I did. 1. I went to the remove software GUI console in configuration and removed all instances of OpenOffice both versions. 2. I then installed J2RE since it wasn't installed 3. I then ran rpm Uvih *rpm in the directory where I had my RPMs 4. Finally I ran the destkop integration RPM for Mandriva 5. A quick log off and log on to load up the menus 6. Voila!! Thanks to everyone for your help. Truly appreciated!! Now I can enjoy the sweet office interface.
  12. Anyone have any suggestions?
  13. I will run the java check. As for the installation. . . not sure what the steps should be. My guess is they go like this? 1. Uninstall Office 2.0.2 - How do I do this? 2. Uninstall Office 1.x 3. Reinstall Office 2.0.2 Again, not very familiar with application installation in linux. This is only my second week here.
  14. Here is my error. Looks like I have two issues! /etc/openoffice.org-2.0/program/javaldx:error while loading shared libraries:libuno_sal.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory /etc/openoffice.org-2.0/program/soffice.bin:error while loading shared libraries: libvc1680li.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I downloaded the JRE-less package. . . so maybe the first one is due to the fact that I am missing JRE libraries that I thought were loaded on my system? Not sure how to check that in Linux. Any other thoughts?
  15. Okay, so I installed OOo 2.0. . . farily simply, love the long list of RPMs. But now when I click on my sweet new icons, nothing happens? Any idea of why that would be? SOLVED!!! THANK YOU! [moved from Hardware - arctic]
  16. Ok, here is my Modem Data. . . Modem_info.pdf
  17. Thanks! I will run the tool as soon I as get home and upload the info later tonight. I appreciate all you help. Counting down the days till I get broadband. Josh
  18. FIRST POST!!! GLAD TO JOIN THE BOARD. Okay, so I recently moved into a brand new subdivision and even though I have a fiber drop in my front yard and some brand new cable lines neither AT&T or Charter will turn up the services until 80% of the homes are built. We are no. 1 of 400. So needless to say, it will be a while before I go back to my wifi setup with broadband. So before I decided to give linux a try I went out and bought a brand new Diamond Supramax PCI modem from Circuit City and popped the sucker in my PC. When I installed the LE version of Mandriva from Linux Format Magazine it failed to load the drivers for my modem. I figured it was a winmodem and that I needed some linux based fixed. I headed over to linmodems and found all the documentation. There was an error message that said that Club Mandriva versions have SLMODEM drivers included and since I have ordered a version from there, I though I would wait until I get those disks, but I am not sure if that's wishful thinking. The point is, if I have to install these drivers, I am not sure how that works, and I have already tried once and ran into several errors. So my two questions are: 1. Does the club mandriva version have software to properly load winmodems included on the disk? 2. If not, what are the best steps in order to properly load . . . what will I need (i.e. additional packages like make and gcc). Thanks!
