  1. Silver Surfer I thank you for your continued support - I am really puzzled (not that it takes much)as I did have this system running successfully with the wireless card on a earlier version of Mandriva (2007 I think it was).

I visited the Belkin site and the driver download appears be a one size fits all for XP and Win 98.

    I have found a ArchWiki page on Broadcom 4312 - 43xx cards.

when i enter the command lspci| grep BCM43 I get confirmation that the network controller is BCM4306 - which does not appear to be covered by this wiki page but suggests a web site where I may find the b43 driver....my next stop.

If you don't mind I may come back to you for assistance..

    Regards to you

    erniev

  2. I'm not sure but if when you do Ctrl+Alt+F1 you see "for x86_64" at the end of the top line it's probably 64bit and if you see "for i586" it's probably 32bit.

Thank you K Bergen, I carried out as suggested get i586 in the top line. I thought so but it is good to confirm this.

    Thanking you

    ev

  3. I hope this makes sense to you.

SiverSurfer Yes - it does make sense thank you - however still some difficulty

I tried a number of path options to the inf file for the ndiswrapper -e but always got the message "No such file or directory exists"

however when I tried it with ndiswrapper -i with the same path ( /home/ev/WiFi/bcmwl5a.inf) I get the message already installed.

So it reconises the path (I am assuming) for the install command but not for the -e command.

However I am sure there is something I am not doing -

    Thankyou

    ev

  4. Thank you - the result from ndiswrapper - l :

    bcmlw5 driver installed

device (14E4:4320) present (alternate driver ssb)

    bcmlw5a driver installed

device (14E4:4320) present (alternate driver ssb)

I'm reading this as the driver and the device are identified ...but for some reason I cannot get them working together to give me internet access.

Is there anything else I can do?

    thank you

    ev

  5. Yes I have tried using ndiswrapper and pointing it to the location of the xp drivers but get various messages:

Unable to find the ndiswrapper interface...

Unable to find network interface for selected device (using (ndiswrapper)

The card I have is F5D7001 uk -

    I welcome any further suggestion

    Thank you

    ev

  6. I bought a copy of Powerpack 2010 but have failed to get wireless connectivity.

The card I am currently using is a Belkin Wirless G Desktop Network card - and I have now given up trying to get it working.

Can anyone suggest a wireless card that they know to work with Powerpack 2010?

    Thank you,

    erniev

  7. I have purchased the 2010 Powerpack and will install on a 70gig hard drive with XP.

I got a little confused with the installation and may have made a wrong entry somewhere - the installation is not yet complete...

I can resize my hard drive giving approx half to XP and half to Mandriva.

I had previously used Mandrive and it had set up the directories automatically but for some reason I am asked to set up the directories individually.

Can you advise what directories I need to get started and how much space to allocate....

or would I be better cancelling the installation and starting from the beginning again?

    Thanks

    ernie

  8. to being with I am very much a know nothing newbie

I had Mandriva 2007 running and could connect through Wifi - I have just upgraded to Mandriva One 2009 and when I bring up the Network Centre the wifi network is not showing - indeed there are no wifi networks coming up in the select network window....is there something I should be doing - with 07 I just clicked on my wifi network entered the password and gained entry ...but now nothing.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thank you

    ev

  9. With your system already booted, plug in your walkman. Then please open a terminal and post the output of
    dmesg | tail -n 15

Thank you - here is the output....

  10. Thanks to everyone who helped my previous post on installing LAME to hep with creating mp3 files.

Now If I could ask another question - having created some mp3 files - how do I now copy them to my mp3 player.

I get as far as connecting the USB cable but then I am lost - I cannot find the mp3 player on the desktop and my Linux knowledge is such that I would not know where to look in the folders. Is there something I should be doing that will allow me to view the mp3 players and copy files to it?

My mp3 player is a Sopny Walkman NWZ-A818

    Thank you

    ernie

  11. Make sure in MCC's "Install & Remove Software" that you have the leftmost button set to "All" and not to the default "Packages with GUI".

    David,

Thank you that sorted my problem -

  12. Than you everyone who has helped me to regain sound,

I have followed the suggestions above - which gave me sound on the interrnet - and by adjusting the eslider control in KMix for VIA 8235 have now sound with CD players.

Without your assistance I would still be bumbling around in the dark....one more questions..what is the best way to increase my system knowledge ...

    Regards

    ernie

  13. I presume that you are trying to use KSCD to play your Music CDs.

Open kscd (don't insert a disc just yet) and click on .....Extras.......Configure kscd.......CD Player.......Settings and behaviour.

Go down to ......CD-ROM device...and make sure there is a tick in.......Use Direct Digital Playback...

Then in ....Select audio backend ....make sure to select......alsa.

Then click on ....Apply. Now try your disc and see if this has done the trick.

    Cheers. John.

    John,

Again thank you for your time

I tried that and still have no sound - the KSCD volume is showing a 40% - and for some reason I cannot move the slide bar to increase this volume - I converted one of the tracks to Ogg Vorbis and with Amorak it play but even with my speakers on full volume it is just audible.

The info below I tried in response to an earlier suggestion - it appears I do not have also set up....I am right in thinking this ....where do I go from hear...

    [root@localhost erniev]# urpmi alsaconf alsa-utils alsa-plugins

    no package named alsaconf

    no package named alsa-plugins

    [root@localhost erniev]#

    Regards,

    ernie

  14. Open KDE Control Centre and go to .......Sound and multimedia.....then.....Sound System. Then go to General.

Make certain hat there is a tick in the .....Enable the Sound System.....And especially a tick in.....Enable networked sound

Then select the ....Hardware tab .....and ensure there is a tick in....Full Duplex.

I hope this helps. Cheers. John.

    John,

Thank you - I followed your insturctions and now I have sound when listineing to radio on the internet - but not if I try to play a CD?

Questions - what would I have done to shut off the sound in the first place and what must I know do to get sound when playing CD's?

    Regards to you

    ernie

You have just the alsa installed as a kernel module, it seems. Do as root

    urpmi alsaconf alsa-utils alsa-plugins

    and try again from console.

    Scarecrow,

here is the output from your suggestion...

    [root@localhost erniev]# urpmi alsaconf alsa-utils alsa-plugins

    no package named alsaconf

    no package named alsa-plugins

    [root@localhost erniev]#

    Regards,

    ernie

  15. Camelrider is right. Before you do something that might add to complexity, run alsaconf as root. make sure that the channels are unmuted. If everything is set, type as root

     aslactl store

this will save the setting. Now check if you have a working sound again. If not, then we will have to check if there is yet another problem occuring, but let us take one step at a time.

Thanks you for the suggestions here is the result of trying alsaconf - am I getting something wrong here??? Further suggestions gratefully received..

    [root@localhost erniev]# alsaconf

    bash: alsaconf: command not found

    [root@localhost erniev]# aslactlstore

    bash: aslactlstore: command not found

    [root@localhost erniev]# aslactl store

    bash: aslactl: command not found

I had a problem similar to this one and it turned out that I had inadvertently changed a switch setting in the kmix mixer. The setting in question was marked Exchange Front/Surround, and I set it to on. I only found this out by setting and re-setting all the switches. So if you have a via 8XXX mixer it may well be worth while having a look.

I had a look at Kmix but do not have the VIA8235 option - as shown on your example

I checked Kmix help for hardwars used and

Sound drivers supported: ALSA + OSS

    Sound drivers used: ALSA

however from a previous suggestion I tried as root alfaconf and got the following

    [root@localhost erniev]# alsaconf

    bash: alsaconf: command not found

    [root@localhost erniev]# aslactlstore

    bash: aslactlstore: command not found

    [root@localhost erniev]# aslactl store

  16. Yes the sound was working well initially,-----

  17. Have you launched Amarok recently? If you have, you need to exit it properly (click right on the Amarok icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen - then quit) or you'll hear no sound.

    Jimtim,

thank you for the suggestion - and yes the amorak icon was in the tool bar - I quit as you suggested, mno sound - restarted the system and still no sound.....

  18. Hi,
