  1. Thats basically what I've done. I added the group "share" and put everyone it it. I would like a way to force automatic correct ownership, i.e. assign group "share" to all files in that directory. Maybe a script file that executes on log out? Where would be the best place to do that?
  2. Solved - it was related to a bad installation of kde3.5.4. I have downgraded back to 3.4.2 and the problem disappeared.
  3. Yeah, I can do all that. The issue is to have these directories/files readily available to my dumb users without me having to log in and move/chown/chmod all the time. I added my new "MyWhatevr" directories to the selection list so they should be able to see what's going on. I did have to reconfigure openoffice to default to "MyDocument" and I'm sure other programs will have to be changed this way. I could have left the private directories alone and used "SharedWhatever" as the new directories, I guess...
  4. After launching and trying to quit kdetv (it won't), all the "drakes" wouldn't launch. What was happening is if I click on the icon in the menu the program loading box appears in the panel as usual, the hourglass whirls around for a minute or so, then disappears. Launching from the konsole as normal user just sits there. As superuser from the konsole, they launch fine. HOWEVER, A reboot fixes the problem. The issue seems to relate to launching kdetv and the subsequent crashing of same. This is happening everytime I try and launch kdetv. It either locks up when you try to quit or kded crashes. Restarting X doesn't fix the problem either. I'm just now learning about backtracing, but the crashing seems to occur from kded.
  5. Yeah, did that. Nothing. What was happening is if I click on the icon in the menu the program loading box appears in the panel as usual, the hourglass whirls around for a minute or so, then disappears.Launching from the command line as normal user just sits there. HOWEVER, A reboot fixed the problem. The issue seems to relate to launching kdetv and the subsequent crashing of same. This is happening everytime I try and launch kdetv. It either locks up when you try to quit or kded crashes. Restarting X doesn't fix the problem either. I'm starting a new thread...
  6. During my latest 2006 install - many upgraded packages and so on...somewhere along the way launching any of the "drakes" from kmenu will not work. They all worked fine at initial install. I can open a konsole and as superuser launch no problem, but trying it as regular users results in nothing.
  7. I have five family members that regularly use my system. There are a lot of file I'd like everyone to have access to easily (none of them is even remotely computer saavy save my 15 year-old). I want 1000's of music, video and picture files to be accessed without difficulty. Using file sharing via nfs works, but it still leaves music files (for example) scattered over each persons personal directories making them hard to locate for some of my users. I want a single location to save and read these files. Here's the experimental method I'm trying right now... I have created a user named "share" and put all the other users in the share group. I then created a share home directory. This worked to a point - letting everyone find files, but it still resulted in many files left in each home users locations. So I renamed each persons personal directories as "MyMusic", "MyPictures" and so on and create symlinks to the shared directories using the default names of "Music", "Pictures" and so on. This way it's fairly obvious to my least interested user where the file are and should go...MyPictures are for me only and Pictures are for everyone. This allows my to keep all users directories private and still allow everyone to find what they want to AND save pictures and so on to share with the rest of us. So the point of this post...I'm somewhat of a linux noob. I'd like to hear from the experts on better plans for my needs or other solutions that work. Also, what caveats I should be looking out for using my method. [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  8. Yeah, I guess I'd better wait until I have the time to compile the official release myself
  9. I tried to upgrage to 3.5.4 on my 2006 installation using the Seer-of-Souls rpm's and had lots of issues. I have now donwgraded back to 3.4.2. Anyone else been able to get 3.5.4 working alright? Some of my problems are the same as I am having with my 2007 install which means maybe kde 3.5.4 is the culprit. These include kdetv locking up, crashing, and causing ksysguard and various "drakes" to fail. One problem unique to 2006 was the package "libkdec1" was used in 3.4.2 but wasn't available for 3.5.4, although some dependancies tried to install it - which failed because of other file incompatabilities. I found other kde3.5.4 rpms at http://rpm.nyvalls.se but I haven't had the time to attempt the upgrade. [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  10. Here's my latest weird problem; On a new 2006 powerpack installation. Updated KDE to 3.5.4 and dkms-nvidia-8776. This caused my keyboard to not work after booting. SOMETIMES if I restart X it will work for a few seconds up to about two minutes, but no more. No changes were made to the keyboard entries in xorg.conf and the system works normally booted to 2007 powerpack. I suspect the newly installed nvidia driver (the 2007 installation that works uses 8774) so I will downgrade to 8774 on the 2006 install and see if that fixes the problem.
  11. Yeah I did that. It seems my issues with the drake tools has something to do with kdetv or the tv wonder card. If I cold restart and DON'T launch kdetv - most of the problems above dissappear. Once I launch kdetv, it seems to run ok, but then if I try and close it or quit - it refuses to quit, all the drake tools won't launch (actually once printerdrake opened up 10 full minutes after launching it) and ksysguard when opened shows all 8's in all numerical fields and the process windows never fills. I say "never" meaning too long for me the watch. The printerdrake behavior noted above makes me think that the drakes may be actually launching, but so sloooowwwly as to appear to not be working. If I have some time to kill I may try and repeat the behavior and just let it sit for a half hour and see what happens.
  12. I finally got printerdrake to work - but I can't find any reference to a print queue or how to delete it.
  13. Ok, I had a bad ide cable - so that fixed a lot of transient boot/install problems. Still having the problem with the "drakes" and sysguard BUT I have traced it to a problem with either my ATI TV Wonder VE card OR KDETV software.
  14. Ok, did total reinstall. Most problems returned. Seems either kdmrc or xorg.conf is part of the issue. Lets find out...
  15. More on the "GUI as root" topic... It's more correct to refer to running a GUI application as root, rather than running the GUI as root. I don't think anyone is suggesting we launch music or video as root and browse the internet. What I very occasionally do - especially when I setup up a new linux system - is update urpmi, edit kdmrc, fstab, xorg.conf, sensors.conf, setup user directories and avatars, move files from one location to another - and so on, all in one session, until everything is close to what I want. I have five regular users on my main system so there's lots of home directories and such. Sometimes over the last few releases, kdesu, sudo, or running an app as another user options fail. KDEinit fails (well reported but never repaired) - this is happening to me with 2007 when I try and launch konqueror from a konsole window after doing "su". The non-gui option can be very time consuming because I do ten things at once with the GUI. Not to mention the vi and emacs command structure are not intuitive and require a somewhat large learning curve. As an old DOS 3.1 user, I tend to use the GUI when it's something I rarely mess with or - in the case of kwrite vs. vi - when it's actually faster. Once I grasp the command line equivalant - in my case urpmi over MCC packager - I prefer the command line because I feel I have more control and better error output. And my final point (let the rant begin) - The lack of control over MY system - i.e. some programmer deciding what I should or shouldn't do - is EXACTLY why most of us (IMHO) use linux in the first place. If I wanted big brother telling me how my system should run, should look, should be - then why bother learning to setup linux at all? Micro$oft has made billions from all the computer user robots who don't care if it works right or fast or their way as long as someone else is to blame when it crashes. Me? - I hate being a victim. I'd rather be in charge of my own destiny and blame myself if I screw it up.
  16. I had this exact problem when I was using "mona" (beta 2 or 3 I think). Believe it or not it fixed itself when; after having many problems I thought were related to 3d-desktop, I uninstalled the 3d-desktop nvidia packages, mesa-demos and compiz packages. When I restarted x and logged in VOILA! instead of the cups error I got "Installing Packages" and then it never came back, even when I later reinstalled the 3d-desktop stuff. My best guess is there is a dependancy conflict that requires the cups packages to be installed first but the install program (I my opinion buggy in almost every release of mandriva since mandrake 7.0) doesn't do it in the right order. Another good reason not to install so many packages at initial install. To bad there isn't better error messages in this regard. I too sometimes find it expediant to log in as root, usually when I am first installing and setting up a system. I get tired of continually entering the root password (the "remember" box doesn't always work as advertised and logging in and out or restarting X defeats it anyway) and frequently kdesu or launching from the konsole results in errors (years of documentation on this issue haven't resolved anything). You may be able to allow root logins by editing kdmrc - I'll let you know if I figure it out. I'm not sure what you mean by "proper" driver but my AC97 imbedded card works fine. I have trouble with arts once in while but I don't think it's driver related. Also, I have an nvidia 6600 and 3d works fine. If your using a "free" version of mandriva the drivers are not included because they're not "free". This sounds like you have "X" issues that you could look into (you mentioned pther X problems with previous versions of mandriva/mandrake). The easiest solution to the nvidia driver for free versions is to update your urpmi sources (easyurpmi.zarb.org) and then install "dkms" and the "dkms-nvidia" packages and nvidia kernel source (should be a dependancy). THEN READ the readme file. You'll need to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to activate the newer driver and openGL. Could also just be your card is too old to support 3d - there are web resources that will tell you what cards support it.
  17. wow, why such an old version? anyway - you should be able to get the missing cd for free via download. These sites had some older iso's but not 8.1 gaming edition. ftp://mandrake.redbox.cz/Mandriva-old/iso/ ftp://mirror.fis.unb.br/pub/linux/Mandrak...x/official/iso/ I don't think the gaming edition had much special except for the sims cd which you have. Have you tried a newer more stable release and tried to install the sims? 8.2 might work out of the box and maybe with some work you could get it working under an even newer release. Sorry I can't offer any more help. It would be cool to get sims working under 2005le or 2006/2007.
  18. I didn't do individual package selection. The printerdrake started after like ten minutes but didn't respond after that (or was too slow responding for me - like 10 minutes after). I can't find any error messages anywhere yet. UPDATE: 100 dpi fonts and mscore fonts installed, Seer-of-Souls added as urpmi source, New issue: ksysguard launches but doesn't have any data in it.
  19. So far I have done: Copied rpms from dvd to hard drive and updated urpmi Added urpmi sources from easyurpmi Edited xorg.conf to add support for my dual monitors and 100 dpi Installed 100 dpi fonts Current issues: drakes still fail, launching konqueror as root from konsole results in "can't talk to klauncher", todo next - add 100 dpi font to font list, add windows fonts, edit kdmrc note on drake problems: attempted printerdrake form konsole, window popped-up very briefly and disappeared. ten minutes or more later printerdrake window reappeared "searching for new printers"
  20. I got my powerpack i586 dvd and did a new install from it. I have read through the errata and did those items that applied to me. My biggest issue right now is it appears none of the "drake" tools will not work. They all worked under RC1, but something is amiss now. When I launch harddrake, diskdrake, printerdrake I get a blank window or nothing at all. No errors just a blank window that won't close without a "not responding" error window. Some of the tools I have tried work - fdisk for example, but the drakes aren't. I like the drakes for tools I haven't yet learned how to command-line properly. For example - printerdrake fails so how am I to fix the hp scanner issue in the errata? It calls for using printerdrake to remove the printqueue using printerdrake.... Note I have JUST done this install and am just starting to set up my system. I will report back to this thread as I fix/discover problems. I hope that anyone else with more knowledge (just about everyone!) will chime in and help me out and those with problems of their own will report then and their fixes.
  21. I'm too noob to know where to find the de-bugger output. I did start amarok from the konsole to capture output but it never showed any errors. It just "spun" until I canceled it BTW - I can tag files just fine. I'm trying to get MusicBrainz to do the tagging...
  22. Thanks - I've decided - after much work and trials - that the best partioning scheme for the average user (meaning me..lol)is to have all the system directories on one partition except for /usr on it's own partition and for /home to be on it's own partition. This seemed a good balanced setup. I read a Linux Magazine article on giving each major directory it's own partition for speed. So on my dual drive system I had a separate partition for /, /boot, /etc, /home, /usr, /var, /usr/local, and I use a pseudo user named "share" to simplify sharing of music, photo and videos on my network - totalling nine partitions if you count swap, plus two more for experimenting with new releases/distros. I found that predicting required space for each partition was very difficult and if there were any speed gains I couldn't see them. I spent too much time working on partitioning and had way too much wasted HD space. Now I use the primary partition as /, 1st extended as /usr, 2nd as swap, 3rd as /home, 4th as backup and duplicated this setup on the second drive. On the second drive, /home becomes /share and / and /usr exists for my secondary or experimental operating system. This allows space for backup and data duplication while still using both drives for a little speed gain. It looks like this: sda1: / ->main (stable) OS (2006 powerpack)....sdb1: / ->secondary OS sda5: /usr ->secondary OS (2007 sunna).............sdb5: /usr -> main OS sda6: unused emergency swap replacement......sdb6: /swap sda7: /home ->stable OS only.................................sdb7: /share ->stable OS only sda8: /sharebackup ->both OS................................sdb8: /homebackup -> both OS Note that the /usr is on the opposite drive from it's "mother" / for speed. I also backup /usr to the backup directories on it's opposite drive. The goal is to be able to bring the system up after a disk failure without losing any data. the /home and /share partitions are only for the current stable OS. When I swap OS's, I update files for all my users as necessary and redirect the partitions to the new OS. Anyone else have a better scheme? I guess my next powerhouse will have raid with hotswap-able backup drives.
  23. Did the install. packages conflicted with task-3ddesktop requiring uninstall of that package. When I rebooted, 3ddesktop was not enabled. When I went to the Configure Your Computer and selected 3ddesktop, it re-installed task-3ddesktop and enabled it. BUT no change in behavior. Maximize still spans both monitors and "shade" by double-clicking on the title bar causes maximize.
  24. I uninstall task-3ddesktop and whatever package the error ,essage was looking for it found and installed. Error gone
  25. My 2007 rc2 install always opens up with an error box in the upper left that says "Could not install CUPS system" or similar. My usb hp printer works fine. I just noticed trying out x-sane for the first time that my printer is listed twice. Could this be related?
