  1. Thank you all for your valuable opinions........I've a hunch that new thoughts have come out of this debate and therefore it has been worthwhile.
  2. By changing to PS2 everything basically now works....at least I can switch operating systems now, thank you. I will now try the USB legacy in the BIOS to see if it is enabled.
  3. In every other way the keyboard works, apart from when I'm in the O.S. menu. However I will try using PS2 I was supplied with the adaptor. But the manufacturers did state that some of the special keys will not fonction with PS2.
  4. I have just purchased a new keyboard ......Cymotion Master Express G86-21050. It is an excellent multimedia keyboard which can be configured for both Windows and Linux..................But!!! When I am in the Lilo menu the keyboard does not operate and therefore I can't scroll. Please any ideas?
  5. I've only used Gnome, I'll switch to KDE and see how it fits. Many thanks.
  6. So it is just a matter of taste. Whatever I do on one I can do on the other. Sorry for bringing up such a boring subject. Thank you for your advise.
  7. when I last installed Mandriva I chose not to install all the applications from the three installation CD's. Is there some way of reversing that decision? I attempted to install again using the upgrade option and I ticked the "ALL"box but the other software was not installed only the ones I had originally installed......any ideas? Thank you.
  8. I need my computer for mostly multimedia work......multitrack audio and video editing. What do you suggest, KDE or Gnome...............or does it really matter?
  9. Thank you Ian That did the trick..........yet another problem solved.
  10. I have a flash drive for my camera sdb1. I would prefer the drive to mount when I insert the card.....at the moment it mounts when booted. Can anyone please help. /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-15,ro 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/sda1 /mnt/sharedrive vfat exec,users,rw,umask=000 0 0 /dev/hda2/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swap defaults 0 0 /dev/sdb1 /mnt/removable vfat pamconsole,exec,noauto,noatime,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-15,managed 0 0
  11. Thank you Arctic........Fixed!!! Des Kinsman
  12. I've lost my sda1 drive now /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-15,ro 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 #/dev/sda1 /mnt/sharedrive vfat exec,users,rw,umask=022 0 0 /dev/hda2/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swap defaults 0 0 /dev/sda1 /mnt/sharedrive vfat iocharset=utf8,umask=000 0
  13. I have configured my /sda1 fat32 drive so I can share between Mandriva and XP except...............I can't write to it from Mandriva. Here is the /fstab :- /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-15,ro 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/sda1 /mnt/sharedrive vfat exec,users,rw,umask=022 0 0 /dev/hda2/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swap defaults 0 0
  14. The sda1 (160 Gb) sata drive without partitions is running with a Sata Raid card but not configured for raid.
  15. I don't know but as I said that's how it came directly after a new install. should I take one out?
  16. OK! I have decided to re-install and start from scratch....it's a pity since I was beginning to get things to my liking. However no use crying over spilt milk. I want to use my sda1 drive which is formatted to fat32 as a share drive between Mandriva and XP. So I don't make another fatal mistake please advise me how to edit /fstab. Also is the swap configured correctly?....seems wrong to me, but that is how it appeared after installation. # This file is edited by fstab-sync - see 'man fstab-sync' for details /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-15,ro 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda2 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swap swap defaults 0 0 Thank you for your help.
  17. Thank you for your help. At this moment I am busy with a rather urgent audio edit job which I have to do on ....dare I say it?....XP. Once I've goy that out of the way I can come back to Mandriva and hopefully get this sorted out. Des
  18. Funny thing is John........it's still not saving the fstab.
  19. Thank you BVC for explaining the correct procedure for saving in Vim without using sarcasm.....unlike another member. It's like everything in this world....It's easy when you know how. As you will guess I am new to Linux but that does not mean I'm thick. Thank you again for your generous help. Des Kinsman
  20. The failed message I receive is :- "The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem" etc etc. It goes on to say, "Is a directory while trying to open / Failed to check filesystem" This just loses me completely. I still can't understand why I can't save fstab in Vim. I'm relying on you to get me out of this hole. Thank you
  21. I still can't save my fstab edit in Vim. I have done what AussieJohn suggested but it does not save. After I hit wq and press return should Vim disappear and I carry on with the boot.......or do I need to reboot ?
  22. Thank you AussieJohn and scarecrow. I will now put your knowledge to the test.
  23. Thank you for that, Scarecrow. I'm trying to rescue /fstab at boot. But when I edit it in Vim I can't save the edit even though I press "QM". Apparently it is this line which is giving the problem :- /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1
  24. Thank you Ixthusdan. Since I am not sure of the navigation I will go for your second option. I just don't want to lose all my settings because I was just to a point when almost everything was working to my liking......that was until I did a silly thing.
  25. Thank you for putting me in my place Spinynorman. But I've got a bigger problem now. I was messing with /fstab to try and correct things.....and now I can't boot. How can I get back to edit /fstab? Please help!
