  1. :D thanks to all!

    effectively, if you want to urpmi XFree after desinstalling that b.. :furious3: .. update; urpmi tries to use the update source and you have the same problem...

    I dunno if it is correct but i create a local dir for rpms /home/chris/rpms; add this to the urpm cfg as local: urpmi.addmedia local file://home/chris/rpms then urpmi the "old" packages.

    Perhaps there is an easier and smarter way to do it but it worked! I really enjoyed the startx response.

    Note that I had before during boot a strange message:ldm_validate_partition_table(): Disk read failed.

    I asked for help about this message in the hardware part of the forum but got no clear answers...

    Now, no disk problem! If you have any explanations...

  2. Since the installation of these upgrades, ihave a pb with my disks, the same error with startx, is it just an unlucky situation ?

    However, i cannot manage to reinstall the good packages with urpmi XFree86; it returns: all is correctly installed!

    I am sure the solution is not so far but i am lost with all these error messages since these days!

    :help:

  3. yes, i can get in but no way to go for a startx: "execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 2)"

    here is my /etc/fstab

    /dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1

    none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0

    /dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2

    none /mnt/cdrom supermount

    dev=/dev/hdd,fs=iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount

    dev=/dev/scd0,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    none /mnt/floppy supermount

    dev=/dev/fd0,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    none /mnt/zip supermount

    dev=/dev/sda4,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

    none /proc proc defaults 0 0

    /dev/hdc1 /video ext3 defaults 1 2

    /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

    i was looking to move to 9.2 perhaps it's a sign, but i will loose all my personal set-ups :oops:

  4. i used partition magic 7.0; tried to boot from the floppies from partition. It detected an error in the number of cylinders, indicated that it was corrected but nope...

    I have 2 HD (1 40 Gb 6 yo and one 100 Gb 2 yo)

    During mdk booting, i have the error after Lilo and it doesn't go the graphical login prompt but instead switch to the terminal login (i am abble then to log in) :help:

  5. hi everybody,

    I am trying to make proftpd run with mandrake 9.1 behind a netgear router. I want first to fix the proftpd.conf file at the localhost level. Everything work well with standard port 21 but if I change to port 59000 or what ever, I can't connect. The daemon is working in standalone mode. Do I have to modify /etc/services and how ? even in standalone mode !!

    thanks for any help.

    chris

  6. hi

    After reading several post on the topic, I have installed postfix+fetchmail (MK9.1). It seems like running ok for the moment: having fetchmail running as daemon (fetchmail -d 180 -f /etc/fetchmailrc from /etc/rc.d/init.d/fetchmail) so it is looking in the "global" fetchmail pref. So does-it make sense to have a ~/.fetchmailrc when running fetchmaild ? I am tempted to rm the different ~/.fetchmailrc and to add the different users in /etc/fetchmail. Is it correct ?

    sorry if the questions are too "simple"

    chris

    Posted 25-04-2003 at 16:59 I also have vortex sound card. Here is how I got it to work in LM 9.1 (took me a long time, reading various forums etc). I didn't touch anything in alsa sound system - no alsa patches or anything. Instead, I installed the proprietary drivers form aureal as follows:

    1. Installed package kernel-source (from Mandrake installation CDs): "urpmi kernel-source"

    1. Downloaded the latest (CVS) version of aureal drivers from aureal.sourceforge.net - the instructions are there.

    2. Edited the makefile to replace all occurences of /sbin/lspci by /usr/bin/lspci (this is where LM puts this command)

    3. edited the binary files asp*.o and replaced "gcc2-compiled" by "gcc3-compiled" (yes, I did edit binary files in emacs - hope I never have to do it again). This step is necessary, otherwise you will get complaints about using modules compiled with gcc2 with kernel compiled with gcc3, and kernel will refuse to load the module. Of course, the ideal solution would be to recompile asp*.o with gcc3, but these are binary-only drivers, no source was ever released - so no chance that we can recompile them.

    4. as root, typed "make install-all"

    5. Rebooted (this is not really necessary, you can as well just do modprobe ... - but I didn't remeber the options and needed to reboot anyway)

    Enjoy!

    PS: THANKS to the author

    I still have volume pb even with good settings for the sound mixer...humm looking for that!

  8. Hi all,

    I've just installed MK 9.1, but the integrated sound device (aureal 8810) of the ASUS mother card is not recognized. I tried to have a look to aureal.sourceforge.net but it looks like the makefile is not adapted to MK9.1...

    Has anyone installed the aureal 8810 device with MK 9.1 ?

    thanks

    chris
