  1. Thank you John for your help,

As the kernel-source stripped was already installed, I installed also the corresponding kernel-source; reinstall the nvidia driver but it's just as before :wall:

    [root@corti Desktop]# urpme nvidia-kernel-2.6.17-5mdv-8774-1mdkdésinstallation de nvidia-kernel-2.6.17-5mdv-8774-1mdk.i586

Error! There are no instances of module: nvidia

  2. Thank you for your help Ian,

In fact, the problem came from my nvidia driver and my geforce fx 5600xt. I have installed the more recent one (9629) (from a plf nonfree backport source). It was more stable but I was stuck in 800x600 (I have an iiyama prolite e430t with a max resolution of 1024x768@75Hz). The problem is that there is not a good communication with my monitor (it's what I suppose...) -> the EDID (Extended Dysplay Identification) is not correct. Then , the resolution is set to the minimum. To change that:

    1. configure correctly your screen (via mcc)

    2. add : Option "UseEDID" "false" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

    3. reboot

The resolution is correct now ;)

ps: I just can't get rid of nvidia-kernel-2.6.17-5mdv-8774-1mdk

    [root@corti Desktop]# rpm -qa|grep nvidia

    nvidia-kernel-2.6.17-5mdv-8774-1mdk

    nvidia-9629-1plf2007.0

    dkms-nvidia-9629-1plf2007.0

    nvidia-devel-9629-1plf2007.0

    [root@corti Desktop]# rpm -e --force --nodeps nvidia-kernel-2.6.17-5mdv-8774-1mdk

rpm: seuls l'installation, la mise à jour, rmsource et rmspec peuvent être forcés

    [root@corti Desktop]# urpme nvidia-kernel-2.6.17-5mdv-8774-1mdk

    désinstallation de nvidia-kernel-2.6.17-5mdv-8774-1mdk.i586

Error! There are no instances of module: nvidia

error: %preun(nvidia-kernel-2.6.17-5mdv-8774-1mdk.i586) scriptlet failed, exit status 3

If anybody knows how to desinstall that package !

  5. Hello,

I am installing mandriva 2007 pwp. I had problems with the display (geforce fx 5600xt) and I think it was because I installed leaving my /home directory intact. Now, it looks great :D

Unfortunately, I have strange freezes (I need to hard reset, ctrl+alt+bckspace is doing nothing).

I looked at the memory, tried to load linux with noapic, no plugandplay in the bios... but with no results.

The worse situation is then I try to load KDE: I can't even go to the desktop. Gnome and IceWM are a little better, I can work a little but after a while .... :wall:

Note that when it freezes, the mouse is moving ok but everything else is out.

Any Help Appreciated, I will open a new thread for that problem.

    Chris

  6. Thank you Ian for your help,

In fact, as I was suspecting that all came because I performed a fresh install (but leaving my /home) even with a new user, I erase my /home partition and reinstall 2007: now the display is ok. Unfortunately, I can look at a clear display but I have strange freezes (I need to reset, it's like a hard freeze :o ).

I looked at the memory, tried with noapic but with no results. The worse situtation is then I try to load KDE I can't even go to the desktop. Gnome and IceWM are a little better, I can work a little but after a while .... :wall:

  7. I was not even accessing to lilo. In fact, I know now that my dvd was not correctly burned even if all was ok with k3k. I will now perform a md5sum before burning the iso and after on the iso burned. Perhaps it was because k3b speed is on auto by default. I used then successfully nero at 1X speed.

I can boot now but have problem with the display (gotta nvidia NV31 GeForce FX 5600XT card) It was ok with the nvidia drivers on my 10.1... The configuration seems ok ( I choose NVIDIA GeForce FX (generic) ). I'll have a look on the forum and perhaps open a new thread.

  8. Thanks for your reply,

As it was impossible for me to upgrade, I performed a fresh install leaving my /home intact. Anyway, there are problems detected for many packages. Does it mean that I had a problem when burning out the 2007 pwp dvd but md5sum was correct and k3b didn't complain of anything !

What is the "normal" duration for installation ? (1h, 2h..10 hours..?)

The problem is that now, it seems to be difficult to access to my home partition

  9. OK guys, this week-end, I installed mdk 9.2, mdk 10.0, mdk move and still have no network :wall: but the rest of my LAN (XP, mdk10.1) is working all right :cheesy:

I have concluded that it is a hardware problem on the 3Com module on my ASUS motherboard.

I have looked for a tool that could test the network hardware but I couldn't find any...

    Thanks for those who helped

    Chris

  10. have you changed accidently your bootproto from dhcp to static, while your router might ask for dhcp? have you applied any patches/updates? try to ping your router. are any packages transmitted?  have your played around with your firewall?

check your ip settings again... all of my routers use 192.168.1.1, not 192.168.0.0 as base ip.

    Thanks for the help, artic

I have not changed anything in the settings (at least knowing that I was changing something!). The router is OK, I plugged in the same cable in my laptop running mdk 10.1 and everything is working all right :D . If I ping my IP, it is OK; but I can't ping the rest of my LAN.

I would like to have a mean to check the network hardware but it is integrated in the motherboard (ASUS P4P800) and I don't know how to do that.

I have tried to insert another PCI network card but then I have no display at boot time just at the moment of activation of eth0 (incompatibility ? ).

  14. Sorry, I should have written 2.6.3-7 as it is in lilo.conf. After reading a previous and having added "devfs=nomount" I have succedeed to go to the login. 2.6.3-7 is loaded but my dvb application (vdr) is not working anymore (no more /dev/dvb/...). Since I do not understand devfs and udev (in 2.6.3-7, I thought that defvsd was automatically creating the devices for me..) I can't make any progress

    Ooops...

    Any Help Appreciated

  15. Hi all,

I have tried to migrate from 10.0 to 10.1 official with lot of difficulties (more than all the previous migrations...exemple:10.1 found that my PC has 2 processors now !!!). Anyway, it seems now that everything works more or less except my dvb applications (vdr...). It seems that there is a problem between kernel 2.6.8 and the DVB drivers or the firmware of my dvb-s card. So, I want to boot back to my old 2.6.7 kernel.

I thought that when you choose upgrade during the installation of 10.1, you can still have access to your old kernel. But when I choose 2.6.7 at lilo prompt, I can't go up to the login process...

Please, I will appreciate to boot my old 10.0 :help:

  16. hi all,

I have a dvb-s card and want to load the firmware at boot time. I put the firmware in /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware and added the modules to be loaded in /etc/modprobe.preload.

    But it doesn't work

    [chris@tuxedo chris]$ dmesg |grep dvb

    saa7146: register extension 'dvb'.

    dvb-ttpci: cannot request firmware!

However when I load the modules with modprobe after the boot, it works perfectly well ...

    What am I doing wrong?

    tia

  17. I put it in modprobe.conf but it doesn't load the module bttv. So I added bttv to /etc/modprobe.preload. Then the module was loaded at boot but not using the good options, I had to put all the options on one line

    #grandtec multicapture card

    alias char-major-81 bttv

    options bttv card=77 tuner=4 radio=0

    Then it worked ...

I really nead how the modules are loaded with a 2.6.* kernel, I mean a step by step doc... :juggle:

If anyone has got one, it is welcome :D

  18. I want to install a grandtec multicapture bt878 card on my mdk 10OE distro.

    modprobe bttv card=77 tuner=4 radio=0

works fine, I can see a video input with xawtv

    here is dmesg ouput:

    Linux video capture interface: v1.00

    bttv: driver version 0.9.12 loaded

bttv: using 8 buffers with 2080k (520 pages) each for capture

    bttv: Bt8xx card found (0).

    bttv0: Bt878 (rev 17) at 0000:02:0a.0, irq: 22, latency: 64, mmio: 0xf7efe000

    bttv0: subsystem: 3f3f:ff3f (UNKNOWN)

please mail id, board name and the correct card= insmod option to kraxel@bytesex.org

bttv0: using: GrandTec Multi Capture Card (Bt878) [card=77,insmod option]

    bttv0: gpio: en=00000000, out=00000000 in=00ffffff [init]

    bttv0: using tuner=4

    bttv0: i2c: checking for TDA9875 @ 0xb0... not found

    bttv0: i2c: checking for TDA7432 @ 0x8a... not found

    bttv0: registered device video0

    bttv0: registered device vbi0

    bttv0: PLL: 28636363 => 35468950 .. ok

but I want to have the module automatically loaded at boot (I know very simple question but I didn't find a doc dealing with module & mandrake other than just lsmod,insmod...)

    /etc/modules.conf

    probeall usb-interface usb-uhci ehci-hcd

    alias eth0 sk98lin

    above snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss

    alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0

    #grandtec multicapture card

    alias char-major-81 bttv

    options bttv radio=0 card=77

    options tuner type=4

    # I2C module options

    alias char-major-89 i2c-dev

    /etc/modules

    bttv

    what can I do ?

    TIA

    chris
