  1. I'm sorry, that was Jimmy Swaggart, a famous tv-evangelist from the States, caught with a hooker.... The point I was trying to make though, is: judge a product (or an argument) by its merits not by the morality, character or filosophy of its creator. Change because you are unhappy with Mandriva the distro or found a better distro but don't change because you don't like Mandriva company policy....
  2. I understood your reason but your argument is in the same line of dissing Jimmy Swagart's arguments for fidelity because he cheated, ie. his arguments have nothing to do with his personal behaviout, they are 2 different entities, Anyway as for myself I tried Knoppix, (K)Ubuntu and Mandriva and still think Mandriva is the best around in terms of ease of use, available packages and configurability.
  3. Cool B) , where can I find them? (be prepared though to answer my questions after I'll **** up my system....again.... :P )
  4. Why base your choice of distro on the distro's company policy or whoever works for the company rather than on which distro works best for you?
  5. I've finally decided to install Ubuntu (setting it up with Kubuntu proved to be to difficult..) and got xgl and compiz to work easely, some pretty cool stuff but erm.... completely useless too :P

    How to make accents?

My keyboard is already set to us (international) but I´m not getting any accents.... (edit: or rather the dead key method seems to work in some apps but not in my browser (ie. opera))
  7. Just a quick question how can I make the keyboard behave like in windows for writing accents, ie. when : ' or ~ are typed then they are automatically placed on the next typed letter, to make an accent?
  8. Okay, thanks for your answer and the help :) . BTW Kubuntu did not detect the Mandriva install (after all the troubles I had with boatloaders I had decided not to let Kubuntu install one but had manually added the entries in Mandriva before the install)
  9. Okay I saw a line: ´label=Ubuntu´ /mnt/win_c ext3 umask=0,iocharset=utf8 1 2 and changed it to /dev/hda2 /mnt/win_c ext3 umask=0,iocharset=utf8 1 2 and now Mandriva works again. Strange thing though I was looking at the fstab file on hda3 (my mandriva partition) with my installation from Kubuntu (on hda2) but I needed admin privileges in Kubuntu to change the Mandriva fstab file. Do you suppose Kubuntu is using the same fstab file?
  10. It was there when I installed Mandriva, though I then still had XP home on it and was formatted as fat32. I tried to install Kubuntu last week in this partition but had some other problems (see for those problems: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=31072 ).
  11. No, I formatted hda2, mandriva is on hda3. The mandriva kernel boots but gives errors (the one I described) and Xorg refuses to load because of a fatal error....
  12. Today I wanted to expiriment a little more with Kubuntu and reformated and labeled (to Ubuntu) a partition. I installed Kubuntu (6.04) but now when I boot into Mandriva I get the following error : fsck.ext3 could not resolve 'Label=Ubuntu' (or something similar). I then get asked wether I want to fix the error ( choosing either Y or N doesn't make any difference). I can then type my root password or ctrl-d for a reboot. If it type my root password and then startx, x continues to load but encounters the following fatal error; (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1280x1024_60" (II) Loading extension NV-GLX (II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA 3D Acceleration Architecture Initialized (II) NVIDIA(0): Using the NVIDIA 2D acceleration architecture (==) NVIDIA(0): Backing store disabled (==) NVIDIA(0): Silken mouse enabled (**) Option "dpms" (**) NVIDIA(0): DPMS enabled (II) Loading extension NV-CONTROL (==) RandR enabled (II) Initializing built-in extension MIT-SHM (II) Initializing built-in extension XInputExtension (II) Initializing built-in extension XTEST (II) Initializing built-in extension XKEYBOARD (II) Initializing built-in extension LBX (II) Initializing built-in extension XC-APPGROUP (II) Initializing built-in extension SECURITY (II) Initializing built-in extension XINERAMA (II) Initializing built-in extension XFIXES (II) Initializing built-in extension XFree86-Bigfont (II) Initializing built-in extension RENDER (II) Initializing built-in extension RANDR (II) Initializing built-in extension COMPOSITE (II) Initializing built-in extension DAMAGE (II) Initializing built-in extension XEVIE (II) Initializing extension GLX (**) Option "CoreKeyboard" (**) Keyboard1: Core Keyboard (**) Option "Protocol" "standard" (**) Keyboard1: Protocol: standard (**) Option "AutoRepeat" "500 30" (**) Option "XkbRules" "xorg" (**) Keyboard1: XkbRules: "xorg" (**) Keyboard1: XkbModel: "logicdp" (**) Option "XkbLayout" "us_intl" (**) Keyboard1: XkbLayout: "us_intl" (**) Option "XkbOptions" "compose:rwin" (**) Keyboard1: XkbOptions: "compose:rwin" (**) Option "CustomKeycodes" "off" (**) Keyboard1: CustomKeycodes disabled (**) Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" (**) Mouse1: Device: "/dev/mouse" (**) Mouse1: Protocol: "ExplorerPS/2" (**) Option "CorePointer" (**) Mouse1: Core Pointer (**) Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" (==) Mouse1: Emulate3Buttons, Emulate3Timeout: 50 (**) Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7" (**) Mouse1: ZAxisMapping: buttons 6 and 7 (**) Mouse1: Buttons: 11 (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Mouse1" (type: MOUSE) (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Keyboard1" (type: KEYBOARD) (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "NVIDIA Event Handler" (type: Other) (II) Mouse1: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded Could not init font path element unix/:-1, removing from list! Set up does detect the installation but says the disk is corrupted and cannot be repaired :( I copied´n´pasted your entry and changed hd0,5 to 0,0

    LILO troubles

That was just my handwriting anyway I´m starting to believe this partition is beyond hope of recovery eventhough the symantec recovery cd and the windows install cd are still able to read all the files on this partition.

    LILO troubles

I put back the older fstab file, changing hda2 to reflect the changes I made but still I don´t have my windows xp back. I changed the bootloader to grub and get the following error: Root (HD0,0) Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7 chainloader +1 (LILO gives no error but simply shows a blach screen with a blinking curus when I try to boot into XP)

I tried installing Kubuntu 6.04 on one of my previous fat partitions, do you suppose it modified my fstab?

    LILO troubles

I have 1.5 GB of mem :D It was made automatically I have 2 disks, one IDE with 2 ext3 partitions and 1 fat partition and one SATA with 2 ntfs partitions. I have 1 DVD player and one CD-Writer. Actually when I looked in my fstab earlier today there where 16 CD-roms but I deleted those entries.... (BTW: my fstab looked like this a couple of weeks ago: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?s=&show...ndpost&p=224239 but I reformatted one fat partition to ext3)

    LILO troubles

Well I´m back able to get Mandriva booted and have my SDA running but Windows is still not working :( With the windows cd I´m able to logon to the partition, though chkdsk (from the XP CD) says the disk has one or more unrecoverable errors, Mandriva is also not able to mount the partition. Does it mean the windows partition is lost? I get the following errors: An error occurred while loading media:/sda1: The file or folder media:/sda1 does not exist. Could not mount device. The reported error was: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, missing codepage or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so

    LILO troubles

Is there anyway I can install a new MBR on my SATA drive and not my IDE? My system choses the SATA automatically to boot from and I can´t change this in the BIOS.
