  1. OK then, 3 more to go now. Too bad; I have an awesomely nice desktop this month. Guess you all will just have to wait a bit.

    Will do then.

But there are number of free image hosting services on the internet. I'm just saying this, because I've already ran out of the quota we have here on MUB... B)

    (post a reply, and there's only 2 to go... :P )

    - edit - Oh, just noticed: two more posts and I'm in my fourth centennial (in number of messages).

  2. I have an ATI chipset card on one of my PCs and 3D is working and I can adjust my resolution fine. The card I have is X700 Pro 256 MB PCI-e. You should use the proprietary drivers (made by ATI/radeon - not open source, if still free). I think I have the latest ATI drivers for that in that said PC, BUT: unfortunately, I don't have that PC on at the moment and my wife is sleeping and I cannot turn it on without waking her. Sorry!

Anyway: have you installed the latest ATI-Radeon drivers? I cannot remember the names of the drivers, but if you go into MCC and look for 'ATI' and 'radeon' I'm sure you'll find it.

Oh, just as an end-note, I tested MDV2008 One on my work-laptop and it worked fine. It has (if memory serves me right) an ATI mobility radeon X1300. It was a test I made w/ the new Mandriva and the 3D worked fine on that HW.

  3. First of all, I don't think Nvidia will support that resolution... :lol2:

i just want to change the resolution to 12809*1024

OK, but seriously you should go with esulcer's advice. The name of the package is

    dkms-nvidia

You must have your repositories set up before that. The best way to do it is to check the link at the top of Mandrivausers.org page (easy-uprmi).

If you only want to change the resolution, that can be changed in MCC also. Cannot remember the names of headings and categories in MCC (I'm in Windows-land currently), but they should be self-explanatory.

  4. The shiny black metal/plastic looks very nice, don't you think! I especially like the menus (you cannot see them in this screenshot though).

The theme is called OrangeLinstaBlackPlastic. It's in Gnome-look.org. It goes very well with a dark or quite black background image.

  5. I'm new to this forum, and I'm confused. How do I upload an image? I click on Add Reply and see the 'Insert Image' button, but it asks for a URL. Do I have to upload an image to the web first in order to include it in a reply? I imagine that I'm missing something.

When writing a message look underneath the text box. There should be a section marked "Attachments". On the right you should be able to upload files to the board. Then with the "Manage Current Attachments" drop-down selection (just above that UPLOAD button) you should be able to add (or delete for that matter) your newly added images to the post.

  6. That process must be very slow. Mandriva 2008.0 has Firefox 2.0.0.6, 2.0.0.9 is out now. 3 versions of difference, waiting for approval. i bleieve that QA process is no justification for this delay in firefox updates in Mandriva repositories...

What are you talking about. I've had 2.0.0.8 for quite some time now... These are the two latest items in the changelog.

    		   * Sat Oct 20 2007 Marcelo Ricardo Leitner <mrl@mandriva.com> 2.0.0.8-1mdv2008.1

  7. You should check the MD5sum after downloading the ISO. Also, when you have burnt it you could check the result by checking the CDs MD5sum.

I guess John was mearly referring to the fact that some people (inadverently) burn CD and DVD ISOs by simply copying the files (first extracted from an ISO file) into the disk. Since you know that you should burn the ISO image as an ISO image there should be no problem.

Other than that (it the CD checks out OK), you should check Spiny's link for all the different options to installing MDV2008. B)

I guess there is no other option to install the Mandriva One 2008 than to boot to the graphical environment (KDE, Gnome or XFCE - depending on the version of MDV2008 One). Good thing about the LiveCD type is that it doesn't install anything on your HD until you tell it to.

  8. what is the emulator of choice these days? I never messed with wine in previous years.... so I'm not familiar with emulators at all. Has it gotten better? Are emulators free?

edit: well, I guess since Ixthusdan called them, "commercial emulators", they must not be free...

The commercial emulator Ix was referring to would most likely be cedega. I personally don't have any experience with that nor do I know of any other commercial emulator (which doesn't mean there isn't any biggrin.gif). And I guess that cedega comes with Powerpack MDV2008.

There are a few free ones: VMWare and VirtualBox. There is also Wine which is able to run some windows programmes, but not perfectly and definitely not all of windows programmes. But they say that Wine is not really an emulator. This is taken from their homepage www.winehq.org: "Think of Wine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs."

  9. I've not really "played with" Mandriva One disks that much, but the one I recently had a look at on our company laptop did just that. It started as only a live CD i.e. you boot from CD. Once Mandriva live CD is up and running, you can install the system in your PC. Well, I cannot, as the HDs on the company laptops are crypted, but it doesn't matter. We are not even allowed to do so. :P

I belive you have the option of installing the system once you have the desktop up&running.

  10. I updated to 0.6.2 from 0.5.2 with MCC (from main_backports), but I'm experiencing some major problems with v0.6.2.

I lost e.g. all my window decoration (the window borders) and could not roll the cube or move windows (i.e. with <alt>+LMB). I couldn't change windows with <alt>+TAB or Super+TAB. In short: I lost all 3D effects and some other window managament items. I experienced same kind of problems earlier also with 2007 Mandriva, but they were corrected in Compiz-Fusion in 2008.0. Now these annoying problems came back.

I had to uninstall the 0.6.2 and install 0.5.2 anew to get a working 3D system back. Anyone else experiencing this?

I'm now using Gnome desktop and the graphics card is MSI NX7600GT-T2D256EZ Club 3D LITE (NVIDIA) PCI-e.

  11. This name 'GeForce FX - GeForce 8800' may lead to thinking that GeForce FX is the 'make' or 'type' and GeForce 8800 is the 'model'. And only one at that.

But this is just an idea - I din't have problems getting the latest modules for my Nvidia.

  12. It was named "GeForce FX - GeForce 8800". It kinda amazes me how many people don't understand this fairly simple naming scheme - it means 'any card from the GeForce FX range to the 8800'. I don't really know how to make it any simpler / easier to understand, suggestions are welcome if anyone has any smart ideas.

Just my two cents... I don't know if this is better, but how about naming it 'GeForce FX to GeForce 8800' or 'GeForce FX ... GeForce 8800'

  13. OK, I don't know if this is a problem/bug/nuisance or none-of-the-above, but for some reason the kernel version installed with the 2008 Free DVD was kernel-laptop. This even though this PC is a desktop one and I've heard a report of an installation where the hw was of a server type.

I don't recall having any problems with the laptop-kernel, but still installed and started to use the desktop one and it's working fine. This other dude had his system starting to feel sticky and slow until he found out about the kernel version. He changed it to SMP-kernel and everything was working nice and smooth again. Both these installations were clean installations and not updates from an older system.

What is it with that laptop-kernel? I don't recall any choices in the installation phase where you chose between different kernels...

And what is the difference between the desktop and the laptop-kernel versions?

  14. As I said. I do not have acpi installed on my computer and I have no problems shutting down my computer correctly. I don't just disable it because it creates the problem you mention of closing Mandriva but then waits for you to manually shut down the computer.

Instead of questioning me about what acpi is used for , why don't you just try uninstalling it and see if it works for you too.

I have proved on my machines and on my many friends computers that you do not need it for a desktop computer. You do need it for Laptops though.

    John.

OK, first off, I'm sorry - I misunderstood your point. I thought I did just what you suggested. But now I see that you meant that I should uninstall ACPI... And how do I go about doing that?

And to Greg (thanks for your advice again): I did just that (urpmi kernel-doc), but the cat... -line did nothing for me. It just gave a blank terminal page. I really don't think that I should go meddling with the boot parameters without really understanding what I'm doing.

But for now, I haven't had these weird problems with the boot since a day or two. I guess I'm going to wait a bit and see if the problem reappears...

Thanks all for helping out. Appreciate it!
