  1. It appears that deleting the cdrom directory and recreating it did the trick. Did I accidently copy my home directory into the cdrom directory. From the point of veiw of a person who doesn't know very much I would say this is what happened. Now however, I tried to save my home directory to cd again (using midnight commander as root) and I get this error...'Cannot create target directory '/mnt/cdrom/home' Read-only file system (30). I dug down into my home directory and was able to save another file into my /home/tmp directory. What is the above error telling me?
  2. This made no differance. I put a blank cd in and it tells me I have the one with the home directory. I put a music cd in and the media player did not come up. I called up media player manually and it will play the cd. The cd icon does not come up on the decktop when I cd is put in. When I have a music cd in and browse to /mnt/cdrom it still tells me I have the home directory.
  3. [daryl@localhost daryl]$ ls -l /mnt total 20 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Mar 13 02:09 cdrom/ drwxrwxrwx 0 root root 0 Mar 13 02:13 floppy/ drwxrwxrwx 12 root root 16384 Dec 31 1969 windows/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [daryl@localhost daryl]$ cat /etc/fstab /dev/hda9 / ext3 defaults 1 1 /dev/hda5 /Archive ext3 defaults 1 2 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom supermount umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0 none /mnt/floppy auto dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows vfat umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda7 /usr ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hda8 /var ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hda10 swap swap defaults 0 0 ------------------------------------------------ [daryl@localhost daryl]$ mount /dev/hda9 on / type ext3 (rw) none on /proc type proc (rw) none on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw) none on /sys type sysfs (rw) /dev/hda5 on /Archive type ext3 (rw) /dev/hda6 on /home type ext3 (rw) none on /mnt/floppy type supermount (rw,sync,dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850) /dev/hda1 on /mnt/windows type vfat (rw,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850) /dev/hda7 on /usr type ext3 (rw) /dev/hda8 on /var type ext3 (rw)
  4. I did this... [root@localhost daryl]# umount /mnt/cdrom umount: /mnt/cdrom: not mounted I then put a blank cd in the drive. Browsed to /mnt/cdrom in konqueror and it still shows my home directory. Then I did a 'ls -l /mnt/cdrom' in terrminal and it listed my home directory. No when I type "mount /mnt/cdrom" I get this message... mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc, or too many mounted file systems The Linux Newbie Guide give this info on the mount command... mount /mnt/cdrom (as user or root) Mount a CD as user. The file /etc/fstab must be set up to do this. The directory /mnt/cdrom must not be your current directory. I've edited fstab before, what is needed to be "set up" for this?
  5. I had my home directory stored on a rw/cd. I view it in konqueror or midnight commander or terminal and it shows my home directory. Then I erased the cd. Viewed in all of the above methods it still shows 'home'. I put another cd in and it still shows 'home'. Whats going on? Am I not reading the cds or what? I know how to follow a path to my cdrom. Its like my path of /mnt/cdrom is actually going to / home. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  6. Using Partimage with GUI I am able to choose which partition to "save or restore" but down further where is says "Image file to create/use" I am not able to type anything or otherwise select where I want to "save" to. So, if I go ahead and choose "next" (F5), I get an error saying "The 'image' filed is empty. Cannot continue". How do I go about getting started using Partimage?
  7. I just found this site. Read the "Linux Sound FAQ's". http://forum.skype.com/viewforum.php?f=18
  8. I have my mic working again. I have no echo when I talk. If I blow into the mic I can hear it on the speakers but ordinary speech is not noticed. Is this normal for sounds to go from the mic directly to the speakers such as when I blow in it. I remember seeing people on stage blow into their mic to test it. So it must mean something. I found the 'echo123' listing in the phone book for testing your sound. I am receiving sound but it is badly (very very badly) broken up. Worse than it started out as before I screwed everything up. I messed with the alsamixer. I don't know if this is why I got my mic working. I really can't make any since out of alsamixer. Theres nowhere that explains what all those settings mean. I tried kmix again. Interesting note...in kmix the capture slider WON'T SLIDE. I can mute it with the button but the slider stays in the full up position. Another point...When I was talking to my brother, after a while his wife got on. Her voice was not nearly as broken up as his. She talks a little louder then he does. So he talked louder and his voice improved a bit with less breakup. This tells me that the breakup problem isn't really because is bandwidth, doesn't it?
  9. Very interesting. I will play with this and post tomorrow on results. Thanks for your time.
  10. Sorry, I don't understand that. When I loaded linux I used a driver off the linux disk
  11. Systems sound card which is a soundblaster.
  12. I deleted skype again including ~/.Skype. Reinstalled. No better. Plus, now, although I can hear the other person, they can't hear me. So I reinstall linux and that didn't help.
  13. I was using Skype adequetly with sound breaking up from the other caller. But I checked the 'advanced' checkbox and tried some of the advanced settings. I then put everything back to the way it was but now everything screwed up. When I blow into the mic it comes over my speakers. When I speak it comes throughmy speakers with a 1 second delay. The person at the other end also says that when he blows into the mic it comes over his speakers. I deleted skype and reloaded it. Is there a way to reset kmix back to default settings? What else can I do? What happened?
  14. I want to download a 500mb file(asterisk). This will take at least a couple of nights since I can't tie up the phone line for more than a few hours at a time. How can I stop or pause a download and restart it again later? I'm using wget.
  15. Is there a better way to go than Skype? Or is all voip bad with a dialup line? I just want free voice communication. Whats a brother gotta do?
  16. Well, I got Skype working, pc to pc. The other night I called a number at random out of the skype phone book to try it out. I got an answering maching message that sounded great. Today I talked to another skype user and he was crackling and cutting in and out. He said I sounded great. I have dial-up and he has cable. I use a mic and speakers, not a headset. Don't know what he has. Anyone know how to improve our communication?
  17. I was trying skype. Yesterday I could hear phone ringing at other end but nobody answered. I did hear a answering message. So everything was working. Today I try to call someone and hear no ring and when they answer I hear no voice. I tried cd player and have no music. So I no its my volume thats screwed up. I ddin't change anything from yesterday. Where do I begin to look?
  18. I successfully downloaded and installed "mandriva-doc-Starter-en" and "mandriva-doc-Drakxtools-Guide-en" but when I try to do "mandriva-doc-Command-Line-en" and "mandriva-doc-Discovery-en", they download but they do not install. The complete process looks like this...# urpmi mandriva-doc-Discovery-en ftp://ftp.phys.ttu.edu/pub/mandrakelinux/...6mdk.noarch.rpm. The terminal display does not go on to display installation info and the docs are not install on my system. Any iidea whats happening? Is there a cache that should be emptied?
  19. Whats the most popular internet telephone software. I think the proper terminology is VOIP. I need one that works with phone line as I am still living in the 20th century. Also interested in call management program whether its with the phone or stand alone. I'll try all suggestions. Thanks...
  20. I know that the first set of numbers after a package name are it version numbers but what is the secend set of numbers? As in the package mandrake-doc-common-10.1-0.2mdk, 10.1 would be the package version number but what is the 0.2mdk?
  21. I installed a program (safecopy) from a tar.gz file. There apears to be no 'uninstall' file for the program. If I use 'locate safecopy' will this find ALL files belonging to that program? Or only files with the word safecopy attached? I mean, when you install software does every assocciated file have the name of the program attached to it? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  22. Thanks. You've given me a few more good tips to add to me 'commands and tips' list. The problems I speak of occured when I used the RPM manager to download them. Heres another example... I just got done downloading mandriva-doc-Drakxtools-Guide-en-2006-6mdk. Previously I had problems with this and after multiple attempts I finally got it. Those attempts were through the rpm manager. This time was similar but resolved itself faster. This time I clicked on the rpm manager 'help' button and since the package wasn't installed, the download proceeded automatically. The download took about 1/2 hour. When download finished I had an error message saying, 'installation failed' and I think 'curl failed'. The package was not installed. So I clicked on the help button again and the download started again. This time It took about 3 seconds. I assume, because the package was really already in the system. Anyway, this time it installed and works fine. I have a lot of problems when installing rpm and I just don't get it. I have just uninstalled 'curl' which will make my default downloader revert to wget(?), I think. I'll see if that makes a differance. I'm in the process of reading up on urpmi and will try some downloading through console, hopefully tonight. Thanks...
  23. I had to reinstall AGAIN last night. After I install my system I install packages containing documentation and also I usually find some cool sounding packages to install. Somewhere along the line I glitch my system by causing a freezeup or 'missing package' errors or some other bad thing. Before I screwed up last time I had some Mandriva Documentatio install, I think I install some man page packages and then I attempted to install an info package. I got a installation error and from then on I couldn't access MCC. The info packages available were 1) info-4.8-1.1.20060mdk, 2) info-4.8-11.20060mdk, 3) info-4.8-1mdk, 4) info-install-4.8-1.1.20060mdk, 5) info-install-4.8-1mdk. I don't remember which one I installed that caused the problem. Questions... 1) If everything isn't safe to install way doesn't the system let you know? 2) Some packages contain discriptions and titles that don't explain very well whats its purpose is or how it fits into your system. How do you read a packages information and determine if its safe to install especially when there are multiple similar packages?
  24. Solved!! I accidently got xfishtank running. As I said, it was not present in the screensaver configure (MCC) window, but it was present in the screensaver-demo window. However it would not run on its own. I decided to try 'xearth' and so I downloaded and installed it. It too appeared in the demo window but not in the MCC window. But lo and behold, when I left my pc and returned a while later it was running. So I went back to the demo window and selected xfishtank again. Prosto!!! It now works. Don't know why but it does.
