  1. Hi! My actual situation after some tests of yesterday eve are these: the Realtek nic which is the only nic in the comp behaves correctly, i can ping it and if i ask an ifup through console or using the tray icon i see it going up. I can ping it and i have a good feedback. When i try to ping the router i get an "host unreachable" mesage even if everything is well set up in the mcc: gateway ip, static ip for the nic, simply host name for my comp. What should i check or config now for override this problem? (I mean let's start from this point: nic ok, getting host unreachable message). Also the router shows the connection led with the nic stable green while i get the host unreachable message.
  2. Im taking away the 3com. In my bios there is no entry PNP OS yes or no, but ive disabled the resource handling from auto to manual then leaving the choice of the IRQs to PnP. Then updated the ESCD. Im reading the plug-and-play HOWTO for Linux found online. I also set as enabled the wake up events related to pci and is set to S1. Also adding in /etc/init.d/boot.local the modprobe eepro100 and disabling the ipv6. Ill keep you posted, Thanks, Ric
  3. Hi! The option Pnp OS doesnt exist in the bios, there's only how the resources are handled, so ill try to disable everything is PnP and manage the IRQs by myself. Also ill reset the ESCD and restart from this point.
  4. Ok guys dont jump on your chairs...it's keeping doing the usual thing...uff Sorry also for making here ppl mad, but i have really tried all the solutions posted here in the forum but nothing. The event that makes linux go mad is the comp switching off: hard or soft doesnt matter.
  5. Hi to all! Speaking with my dad he gave an idea that if will turn out to be true would sound incredible...my motherboard is the Aopen one with the Tube sound, a thermoionic valve which is very close to the nic cards. All the behaviour makes think that this is the random external agent that prevents the nic to be brought up in the correct way. And this would explain why after a while the nic works properly: the valve when warming up crosses diff frequencies and a particular range could influence the nics. Im doing tests and if so guys i think u can jump on your chairs for this!
  6. So what? That's natural: every onboard component disabled within BIOS does not exist for the OS! HardDrake can be safely disabled, since other hardware detection scripts are present (hotplug, or in newest Linux revisions udev without hotplug- thank god for that!). <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yep it's normal, nobody wants to see it. Please give a look to the whole post than the situation will be more clear to you.
  7. Nope but Mandriva stopped to see the eth0 after have disabled in the bios.
  8. Ok guys just for end the topic: it works but once in a while happens that the comp boots without the eth1 up so the best is to delete and recreate the entry using the mcc. Anyway when it's up has outstanding performance. Too bad in a way coz i wanted to use the wake up on lan services for remotely control the comp. Ric

  10. Id like to leave it as last chance :P , anyway other tests today and then ill report the result. I know the topic became big and long but id like to give the max feedback possible after have seen that two diff distros react in the same way with my hardware.
  11. Hi to all! News of the day: put the bios in the default setup values, disabled the realtek and Mandriva still see it and i had a nice ifcfg-eth0 all shining in the folder...pretty invasive hardware probing i could say... Anyway, with no apic, disabled in the bios, but with the ifcfg-eth0 seen for the realtek and used with dhcp (which is disabled in the router) the...ehm...3com worked a whole night perfectly. Other tests are in programs.
  12. Speaking about how a nic is used i think the politic is the first comes the first has the access and the possibility to handle the device. Anyway there should be the call to the chipset that handle the ip and the negotiation with the operating system. Honestly Linux is perfect, there's only this thing that should force a bit more the nic use. This is the idea i got readin the other posts in this and other forums. Anyway i just added to possible "resolving configuration" the disable of the Apic and local Apic. Ill try when at home. Then it's left to delete the ifcfg eth0 and to disable the ipv6.
  13. Hi here im back with some news. Best behaviour reached by the comp: leave the realtek enabled but with no use under mcc, static ip on the 3com, router always on, pc switched off but never unplugged. I could work so with many boots. Linux Mandriva and also Suse really dont like this: only one eth. When i tried to leave only the realtek (honestly with apic and no explicit not use of ipv6) but with a simple static ip i get the usual behaviour. Last test in program: leave realtek on in bios, no entry in Mcc and no ifcfg-eth0, no apic, no ipv6 and 3com with static ip. To notice that every declaration of static ip under mcc it goes written inside the nic eeprom of the card and mcc itself even if the realtek is switched off (means yes in bios but no use under mcc), it shows the ip is already in use but another nic. In mcc the wizard related to the lan/dsl etc setup has a priority compared to the other wizards like the config tools and the reconfigure link in the mcc. Just as info: suse 10 eval dvd cannot even bring up the realtek. Also checked with full 9.3

Ah got it you mean to leave all the changement under MCC but related only to the card and no super wizards about the whole networking setting...nice...also coz the eth must find all from the router. Ok will do some tests during the weekend and post all here.   15. Yep i think ill do so at the end. The fact is the case is so uncomfy and big which isnt easy to work on it. Sorry but can someone suggest the best commands to use in cascade for avoid possible mistakes?

Im undecided what to do for the next installation if to leave enabled the realtek but use the 3Com under Mandriva (deleting all the entries, aliases and so on of the eth0 = Realtek), or instead take away the 3Com and use only the Realtek. A correct procedure for install the eth card is to do it durint the OS installation or better leave it when everything is set up?
  17. This is coz when i do the tests i switch off and on in the bios the realtek. I thought about the hotpluggin also, i want to keep it disabled anyway. Never like the PnP since its introduction on the market. You know more than me honestly how an alias can affect all this? This will be done as soon as i will receive the dvd from Mandriva coz for now im working with the 2Gb download, it's not the final installation as i intended to do. This u can feel it on your skin as soon as you face a problem in Linux.
  18. Linux likes the "server" approach :P :D But would be nice to hear something from Mandriva Team also about all this. Also to know some sure hardware combination like: mainboard + eth card(s) + router that always works. Mine is: Aopen AX4B 533 Tube, Realtek 8139 onboard eth and 3Com gigabit eth, USRobotics router/modem mod13950 4ports switch.
  19. Ok will do, thanks! It's still left to force to disable the ipv6 but honestly i dont see trace of it in any configuration but will do for sure. Also i have seen that as soon as i enable from the bios the realtek it appears the sit0 in Mandriva. Another thing is this: for make all work as it should be i must leave switched on the router and i can switch off the pc but leaving the ac power on in order to have the mainboard under charge (i mean with the voltage). I did different tests and in this way at every reboot every works.

If i bring down the eth1 (i only disabled the eth0 - Realtek from the bios) then i cannot bring it up anymore. This corresponds to the switch off behaviour with the power button. After a non working scenario i enabled the eth0 onboard card from bios and i got suddenly the eth1 brought up too. Now the eth1 is working under static IP while the eth0 is down coz it's trying to use dhcp and the router has the dhcp server service turned off. So seems that i have to create a particular big I/O event for be able to use the network card and then reach the router and so on. There's to notice also that when the card doesnt work Mandriva shows the ethxx up during the boot while isnt. and the ifconfig ethxx up and the ifup commands are accepted and the icon in the task bar changes coherently while instead isnt real. Any idea? Is it a kernel bug? Shall i call Mr.Torvalds? :P Call a priest?
  21. Wait a sec...u mean u have disabled the card from bios then used the suggestions and u got the realtek workin? But it's kept disabled in the bios?
  22. I agree i bought it some time ago when i thought the realtek was broken. I left WinXP never did a combination of it with Linux.
  23. Yep seems so. Need to check with some reboots honestly. I brought the topic also to Suse. Till tomorrow i wont be able to post here the result of other tests coz i cannot reach my comp now. I do really hope to be able to get rid of all of this asap.
  24. :) Right question: it's just for test which one works better. Also the 3com covers the Gigabit eth while the old realtek stops at 100. I only wonder how all this can happen coz i think the combination of a network card a router and a Dsl connection is so wide spread all over the world...maybe new motherboard? But i dont think so coz in the past WinXP was working well, also the cards cannot be coz when i can use them (not at the same time of course), they do really work well. Can someone here tell me how has filled the configurations inside MCC or their experience about the network config under Linux?
