  1. Jeff, you got my point exactly! Man Dribble, bleck.

I also agree that they don't have enough marketing sense to pour piss out of the commercial boot.

On what planet, do you take a well established, reasonably successful product, and change the name without lot's and lot's of public discussion? I can't imagine what they were thinking.

So, do you guys think that Mandrake Limited Edition 2005 (another stupid name) will still be called mandrake, or do you think they'll have time to change the name to ManDribble?

  2. Why do you have AOL? is there some reason why AOL is the only option?

DSL is only $5.00 a month more than AOL.

AOL is the most expensive dial-up in the United States.

AOL is the worst rated dial-up in the united states as rated by dial-up customers.

Just not sure why anyone still uses them.

  3. while I"M thinking about it, I should point out that if you're using a current version fo mandrake, then XF86Config-4 is just a linked file. The real file is /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Why don't you take a quick look at that file and make sure it's the same. You never know, something wonky could be going on.

Also, on thing you could try on your own, you could download one of the older drivers from nvidia, and install it instead, see if maybe X is more stable with another version

  4. Just seems like a realy dumb name. It's a shame to see such a good distro call itself something so bad....

I understand changing the name, but good lord, couldn't they have found something more palletable than mandriva? It sounds like, well, it sounds like something I can't explain on a pg13 message board.

You know, I just read the press release, and I am now as uncertain about the future of 'mandriva' as I am excited about the next release of mandrake.

Mergers like these often equate to much more than simply adding in some new tech.

I remember when HP and Compaq merged. At the time I was a big PocketPC buff, and I remember the way that went. The best minds at HP got together withthe best minds from compaq, and together, they produced a line of PocketPC's that was generaly disliked by Compaq fans and HP fans apart.

Maybe I'm making too much of all this, but somehow, changing the name makes this feal less like buying out a company to take some tech, and a lot more like another bad corporate merger.

  5. Don't forget, if people give you advice or instructions that you don't understand, you should ask them to clarify.

If you don't know how to install the RPM with the kernel source in it, you should ask. I'm pretty sure it's already well covered if you search the boards, but don't be affraid to ask if you can't find it.

Anyway, you realy need to install the source code for the kernel before the driver will work. It needs it.

  6. This may not be the most helpful post I've ever made, but I've never had serious problems with RPM dependencies. There have occasioanly been a few things that didn't come off too well, thoughy I usualy found that they were solved by updates.

I've also not had any great problem with nvidia instalaion. you just make sure you ahve the kernel source installed that matches your kernel, which is on the CD's, so that's a no-brainer, you download the file from nvidia, and you run the file as root, from a console with no X running.

Personaly, while I agree that this isn't a 'stupid user' type of probloem, I don't think it's a distro problem either. If it was, then we'd all have these kinds of problems wouldn't we? I can install mandrake, nvidia drivers, and every piece of non-free software that I care about, configure my desktop, configure my rather complex home network, and check me email all in about 90 minutes, and i'm not alone.

I think what we have here is a problem of fit. One of the beautiful things about linux is that there are so many flavors. There is certainly one to fit most any person, all the way from windows clones like linspire, to those brave folks that bootstrap their own distro from scratch. One of these days, I think I'd like to give that a try, but not today. ;)

Clearly, aspguru, Mandrake is not the distro for you, and that's okay. Lycoris and Redhat weren't the right distro's for me. I just hope that you can redirect your current frustration with mandrake into a more fruitful attempt at another distro.

  7. That's too bad. I used to use unison to sync my Zaurus to my desktop. I didn't like using the pim that was built in, and kdepim for the Z had no sync option, so I would unison the files back and forth. it was realy great. Maybe there is a way you culd get compatible versions running?

What kind of errors did you encounter? If you could run unison, you'd realy like it. I don't know if it's still there (and can't check since I'm on my wife's laptop at the moment) but unison used to be available as an RPM in the Contrib. If it's still there, I'd bet there's a version for those evil apple thingie's lol.

  8. btw, it wouldn't be the 'no partition table' bug, as then it wouldn't get automounted (this has *just* been fixed for 10.2

WOW. I hadn't read your reply closely enough before now. My wife has a pen drive that REALY doesn't like having a partittion table for some inexplicable reason, so I have to leave it just formatted, and mount the stupid thing manualy every time. This alone is enough to make me buy a limeted edition 2005 powerpack. I was going to try and stick it out, or maybe play around with a new distro until 2007 came out, since it will be the first true 1 year release, but this is worth it for me.

    Thanks for the info.

  9. dang you adamw, you just beat me to it. lol Though I wouldn't bother pointing kaffiene at the new codecs.

You should realy consider just using RealPlayer. The latest version is realy fantastic, and IMNSHO, it's better than it's windows counterpart, and not just because it's running on my linux box. It's much more stream-lined, and doesn't have all the ad-ware built in.

This is something I've seen a lot in the linux community, and I don't realy understand it. There seems to be a resistance to using the right programs for things. Lot's of people use kghostview for PDF's and mplayer or xine for RealMedia files, and those horrible PLF swfcodecs for flash, when all of those things are freely available from the manufacturers.

I wonder if people realize that by downlaoding the real apps, from the companies that make them, they are realy supporting the entire linux movement. It says, "Yes, there's people who actualy use linux and appreciate your software." That means more native ports.

  10. If you're using KDE, you can also open up Kmix which is infinitely more user friendly than alsamixer. I found that with many drivers, including emu10k1, the default volume is 0 and PCM is muted by default, both bad. Open up a mixer, and will do, and just start checking boxes and turning things up untill you get sound.

My current sound uses AC'97, and I had to make some very specific changes in my mixer to get the sound on, but I'm pretty sure emu10k1 will work with everything up.

  11. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that befroe you unload the nvidia driver, you'd have to kill X. That is, the graphical server would have to be shut down, before the graphics driver could be unloaded, so you'd have to shut half-way down, and then restart X after it came back up. Not exactly a great solution.

A big part of the problem here, is that while nVidia has been marvelous with their support of linux, they have chosen, for many reasons, to not release the source code for their drivers. So, it's hard for the people working on projects like ACPI to get things like suspending to the hdd to work properly.

your script would have to do a copuple things. First off, it would have to run as root, so you'd need to be using sudo.

Then, it would need to kill the display manager and everything that depends on X, so with the default mandrake setup, the command would be 'service dm stop'

Then you'd need to unload the driver, which I believe would be 'rmmod nvidia'

I'm not the best at writing scripts, so if that all looked like giberish to you, or if you're just not a 'script person' perhaps some more skilled person will finish helping you.

  12. Just one more reason that I've never been abig fan of ABIT mobo's. Everybody thinks they're hot shit, but I just haven't had good experiences with them. Give me a Soyo over an ABIT any day. Next time you upgrade mobo's, give them a try, the bios is VERY explicit. If you look at a soyo bios screan and don't understand, you have no bussines monkeyibng with the bios on your own.

  13. I'm glad I could help.  Yet I'm a mere Linux newbie myself  .

That's the way it's supposed to work. It's nice to help isn't it? No matter how much you feal like a n00b, I was at least a big of a n00b just a couple years ago, and I've helped countless people. And beyond that, there's people on this board who have help many times the number of people I've helped.

In no time, you'll no as much as me or more, and you'll be answering questions every time you come here.

  14. I have had problems in the past with pen drives that are claimed to be supported, but to be honest, this is a new one on me.

One of the most common problems, which I suppose 'could' be the problem here is the way they are formated. Let me explain as best I can, and hopefully someone else can pick up the slack.

In windows, things like pen drives are normaly formated without patitions. Iin linux, that would mean it would be, for example, /dev/sda/

That's different than how linux would format it. In linux, it would be formated as sda, and then a logical volume would be created 'inside' sda. This would be /dev/sda1.

Your hard drive is the same way. The drive is hda usualy, and the logical partitions inside are numbered hda1, hda2 and so on.

What you might try doing in linux is formatting it 'properly' Windows will still reccognize all the data, but linux will mount it with less hassle. It's a stretch, but being mounted incorrectly 'could' be the problem.

Another possible cause, is that the stick itself has bad data on it, and formatting will fix that too.

This is where I get fuzzy, haven't manualy formatted in a while. Perhaps someone else can help you with that, or tell you how to do it through the Mandrake Control Center. I know it's possible to do that way, if nobodyhelps by tomorrow, I'll figure it out and let you know.

  15. The OE / CE split was pretty much welcomed by everyone, actually, internally and externally. I'm not sure where the idea came from but the marketing guys and the technical guys both like it (tech guys because they can make a really good stable release, marketing guys because they have twice as much opportunity to sell :>). As I said, I'm *fairly* sure it's going to continue from 2006 release onwards, but I'm still waiting on official confirmation of that. I know that was the situation internally in February, but hey, things change fast

I just want to take a moment to say that even if I'm in a small minority, that I think the CE/OE split is without a doubt the absolute dumbest thing I've ever heard of or seen from an OS publisher.

It's confusing to new users. I can't count how many posts there were on this site alone reguarding "what the hell is CE???" For a very long time, there was much heated debate as to what the new names realy meant, before we figured out that......

It's dishonest. It means alternating between a release than in the past would have been considered a testing version or at best an RC in terms of quality and a version that is more stable than past releases because so many people were tricked into testing the RC.

It's harder to support. If more releases = easier to support, manrake wouldn't be moving to a yearly cycle. End of discussion.

It's harder to market. Increasing the number of releases, in addition to the problems listed above, also makes it virtualy impossible for retailers to stock. I realy amazed that mandrake would consider keeping this double release program now that they seem to have figured out that less is more with this yearly schedule.

Personaly, I will never install another CE. Nor will I reccomend one to anyone. I think that the new retarded release schedule is the best thing I've seen mandrake do in a long time. However, I will laugh if they stick to this idiotic CE/OE split. The only thing that could make the anual release schedule better is if it was a TRUE yearly release. 1 year=1 release. Leave EVERYTHING else for updates and patches. As someone (I think gowator) said, releases are for new installs (and I'd add, updates too big for non-uber users, like kde versions).

    my $.02

  16. I understand what you're saying, I'm just not sure why it would be that way for you. Maybe someone else can help more. I'll see what I can find this eavening.

Personaly, I've always used the main branch of mozilla rather than mozilla firefox, so it may be a problem unique to firefox or to the particular version of firefox you're using.

If you can't solve the problem with ff, you could always try just regular or mozilla. Of course, you should be able to fix the ff problem. I'm jsut not sure how.

MAybe you could tell me a couple of things.

    1. Describe EXACTLY what happens when you try to launch ff witht he icon in the kmenu.

    2. open up the menu editor, and open up the edit screen for ff, and tell me EXACTLY what each entry says.

    3. Last, tell me exactly you are entering in the cosole that does launch it correctly.

With that, I can probaby get you aquared away.

  17. if the icon doesn't work, you can simply delete the icona dn make a new one that does. If you don't know how, just ask.

Also, it's very easy to make it your default browser.

    kmenu>system>configuration>configure your desktop

components>file associations. here you can assign your default programs. simply set mozilla or firefox as the default for .html, .HTML, .htm, .HTM, .shtml and .SHTML

  18. First, let me sidestep your problem and give you some advice. I've been trying to get my ather in law to follow this advice ever since I got him turned onto linux and for whatever reason, he also refuses to follow it.

My advice is this. Stop using konqueror. It's not a good browser. It's fine for browsing local files, but beyond that, it sucks. To my knowledge, there is nothing it will do that you can't do with mozilla or moz firefox, and those can do many things that konq can't do.

Also, many websites, will reccognize and work with mozilla that will not reccognize or work with konq. Setting up pluggins in konq is hit or miss at best.

If I haven'e convinced you to stop using konq, first, may God have mercy on your soul, and second, click on the kmenu>configuration/configure your desktop. once you're there, click on internet options in the pane on the left, and look for the option detect pluggins. it's in there somewhere. It will scan the mozzilla plugin directory and isntall anything that is compatible with konq in the right directory. Chances are, flashplayer and realplay will not work, even after doing this many times, but it's worth a shot if you insist on punishing yourself by browsing the internet with konq.

  19. I had a similar problem a long time ago, and I had a very effective, but round-a-bout way of fixing it. The way to fix it without actualy doing anything with linux, is to open up the case for your your computer, switch the drives so that the dvd is primary and cd is secondary.

I'm sure there is a software way to do it, but I'm a hardware guy, If I can fix it by monkeying insside my computer, I will.
