Also, I ran USB view, and only the SMC slot is shown. And I tried it on a differnt PC with windows and the reader is functional.

I have a 4 card USB reader from Lexar. It has slots for SMC, SD, CF and MS, whitch should be sda, sdb,sdc and sdd respectively.

At install, only sda was recognized, whitch is the SMC slot, (the only one I don't use) THe three I care about are not detected. I tried putting cards in the other slots and re-running hard-drake, but it didn't help.

I checked in /dev/ and there's no block devfices to mount for the others.

I know that i's possible for them all to work because when I boot knoppix fromt he CD, it reccognizes all the slots that have cards in them and puts a link on the KDe desktop. Of course, I don't want to have to boot a different OS every time I need to use my card reader.

So, knowing that I can make it work under a different distro, what info do I need to manualy make block entries if that's possible, and if not, what do I need to do to get it recognized.

Also, while they are recognized when booting fromt he knoppix CD, when I had a hard-drive install of knoppix, it didn't work. What's up?

WHat about periferals? USB devices and the like. Nothing in the hardware you listed would sugest a problem to me. You might try configuring the bios differently. Make sure Plug n' play or "PnP" OS is dissabled in BIOS if it's an option. If that doesn't help make sure that Advanced power management is turned off also.

If none of that does you any good, come on back and those with more knowledge than me can probably figure it out.

NOpe, need a LOT more info than that. In fact, that is some of the least important infor. What is the hard drive configuration?

What brand and model is the motherboard?

what sound card?

what video card?

Wht peripherals?

etc.

I have tried 3.

First: Lycoris Desktop/LX It worked well, and was even easier to instal than mandrake if you can beieve that. It was descent, but it didn't feal like an OS. It felt like bits and pieces of different OS's.

Second: Knoppix. Knoppix runs live from the CD and it is an amazingly usefull tool for working on a computer with a crashed OS. You can also do a hard-drive install (whitch turns it into a custom Debian) and I did so. I loved everything about it except that it used a custom kernel that several things depended on and I hae a few pieces of hardware that require a recompile, so it didn't work for me ultimately. The best part about it was that because it's Debian, you can use apt-get, whitch is WAY better than urpmi.

Third: Mandrake 9.0: My all-around favorite so far. It took a me a while to get it installed because of some cheap four year old hardware from gateway, but now that it's going, it's great. I can use standard kernels with it, URPMI isn't bad, the mandrake control center is what linux has always been missing and ultimately I think this is where I'm staying.

I miss jpad Pro. It is the worlds most user friendly Java IDE. In fact, I have beentrying for days fto get java and netbeans or one of a dozen other IDE's to work, and NOT ONE of them has an install that takes less than a bachelors degree in CS to install and configure.

I also miss the games a little.

An internal HARDWAR CONTROLLED modem for only $9.95 + shipping and their shipping is reasonable. I just bought one of their 400watt power supplies for $10.50. It's due to arrive in a couple days. I'll let you know how it goes.

Of course, the drawback to an internal is the tty is funky, but it shouldn't take too long to fugure out and harddrake should reccognize it.

I want to say first, I realy did search the forums and didn't find my answer.

First problem: I can't connect to my dial=up ISP when I make my own connection, but I can when I use the mandrake control center to connect. I have coppied every setting exactly but what happens is that when I try to connect it dials and connects, but none of the applications i.e. web browsers and the like can tell I'm online. When I use the mandrake control center to connect, it all works fine.

Since it's realy inconvenient to was throught the control center, how do I get to that connection more simply. (from KDE, not a prompt)

Second problem: A good link would be fine here. My experience with netowrking has always been with Windows. Whitch, though flaky and unreliable, is very simple to set up. Let me explain my set-up to you and you explain to me (or give a link) the way you would explain it to an idiot or a child.

*Mandrake box as my "gateway" using a dial-up modem on ttys1with one eth card

*One router. has one "WAN internet" port and 4 "LAN" ports`

My big questions are how do I figure out what IP's and domain names and things to use, and whitch type of port should I connect my mandrake box to? In windows what I had to do was hook my main box up to the LAN side so I could enter the default IP for the router and set it up (it's a wirelss router also) and then I had to discontct it and hook the main box back up to the WAN side and then enable internet connection sharing.

Also, I want to share the CUPS printer that is connected to my mandrake box.

I realize that a lot of this is realy basic stuff, but I could raly use the help.

One more question. I'm compiling a new kernel and I'm using 'make oldconfig' with Steve's .config because xconfig gives me nightmares and his is almost perfect. How do I change the APM option to account for passing 'linux apm=off' at at boot?

Also, I don't suppose you smoke a tobacco pipe do you? If so, I might have a couple I'd be willing to trade.

If nothing else, tel me how much it's worth to you. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a used 750 durn, but we might work something out.

that's what realy sucks. i HAVE registered at mandrake expert, but I am unable to post a help request. I've even sent an email to the mandrake expert customer service, but I get no response. This is basicaly the same problem I had with my order. They just don't answer emails.

It sounds to me like the problem is that you are using a winmodem that has linux support and for whatever reason, the drivers weren't installed with it. So it wouldn't find it. Comm1 (tty0) is the first external serial port on virtualy every ssytem in the world, so that's not it. If win says com3, it's com3. Maybe com 2 or 4, but not 1.

Looked everywhere, can't find a copy. I guess TuxGames was it. Oh well. Maybe it will work with WineX now.....

Son't worry steve, I have every inention of trying your method, but it will be a few days beofre I try to tackle that.

Soyo officialy supports linux, so it should work with mandrake if it's functional, now I just need to get my hands on a cpus and some ram.

Okay, I now have access to what MAY be a working soyo k7vdragon. NOt the dragon+ Should work, just a litle worried because it has LOT of onboard stuff, sound game port, USB, eth, smartcard if you hook it up, DVD decoding, fiber optic sound, opitonal raid......

Anybody successfully use this board? More importantly, anybody recently updrade and have a socket A CPU and some DDR laying around?

If anybody understands not spending money you don't NEED to spend, it's me, but you might consider an external serial modem. I finaly broke done and got a serial modem and it's the easiest thing in the world to configure. I'd never touch drakconnect. Just open kppp create a new connection pointing tty0. I didn't even bother with changing the dev/modem entry because kppp will remember wher eyou put it. I know your modem should work (you used it before) but it's just so mind bogilingly easy to configure a serial modem.

ACtualy I did try that, but it had no effect what so ever.

At this point I think I will try to build a good kernel and .config, it will just be a few days before I have time. I have an exam tommorrow, and lot's of projects going. It's just realy dissapointing that this has all been so difficult. I've tried several distros that all worked on my system and the one distro that I was REALY interested in (intersted enough to buy a boxed set) won't work without a lot of effort. Oh well.

is this modem internal or internal? Also, have you tried a different program to configure your connection? Like kppp?

Also, how do I unpack the RPM on a debian system? Knoppix is, after all, debian.
