  1. NOTE***** Most of this thread concerns older version of mandrake linux. If you are having trouble getting the psc 1210 working in mandrake 10.0ce, this first part is all you need to read. if you're trying to get it working in 9.0 or 9.1, read everything below the *'s

With the work that came from the begining of this thread, it works nicely in 9.0 and 9.1, and with no work at al, it is automaticaly configured and works great in 9.2

In mandrake 10, you can either use the older 2.4 kernel, or fix and recompile the broken 2.6 kernel they shipped with mandy 10 or you can go through a very simple work aroiund to make it work flawlessly in 10.0 If anyone else see's this thread first and not the one with psc 1210 in the title, before you get impatient and send back your printer, here is the fix workaround if you want to use 2.6 without recompiling.

    1. Let printer drake or the installer set it up for you.

    2. Open up printer drake and delete the printer. This will only delete the cups settings, it will still be listed with hpoj and you can still scan. (You might take a minute after deleteing to make sure scanning still works.

    3. Back to printer-drake and add a new printer, but DISSABLE ALL AUTODETECTION OPTIONS!!!!

    4. Whe asked how it's connected, say usb0

    5. When you are asked if it a "multi-funciton' device frm hp or epson, say "NO!!!!!"

    6. Reboot. (You don't technicaly need to reboot, but it's faster that starting stoping and modprobing for 5 minutes.)

    7. Reboot the printer.

That's it. It will work like a champ. The one bug with this work-a-round is that each time you boot your computer, you must also reboot the printer after the pc boots. It's not an issue for me because I leave my printer turned off when i'm not using it. If you roll back to the 2.4 kernel that's on the cd's, you don't need any fix at all, and it work just fine.

Now, the origianl thread starts here ********************************************************************************

    **************************************************

So I decided to pick up an HP psc 1210 combination printer/scanner/copier. It's compact, and only cost $99.00 at Office Depot.

So I went through printer drake and it was recognized automaticaly as a multi funtion Officejet device, and it configured the scanner portion of it with a warning not to use scandrake, because it doesn't cover multi function devices. Then it configured the printer part and everything seemed to go fine. THen I tried xsane to see if I could scan. I get beautiful images fast. Very happy.

The problem is, the damn thing won't print. When I try to print anything, testpage, text, image whatever, I can select the printer, but I get NO response from the printer what so ever.

Any idea where to start?? I uses the Generic Unix Printing System.

  2. bvc is right, it doesn't work that way. I tried saving the session, and it didn't work. When i rebooted, the terminal was there, and konq was still drawing the desktop. And, the option was not in the menu. So, exactly what config files do I need to edit to make nautilus the default, because I'm realy growing fond of it.

  3. Okay, feeling pretty dumb right now. i just set nautlus to draw the desktop for me, so that it would become the default file manager, all went fine, but i forgot to select save for next login when I reboted, and now, the option is deselected,a nd i can't find it. Can anybody who isn't as inept as me tell me where that option is???

  4. Here is my problem, konqueror is UGLY. It has great functionality, and it's well integrated etc, but it's just plain ugly. Is there any way to make it look like nautilus, or make nautilus be better integrated (i.e. open the "Home" link oon the desktop, import all the file associaciont I've set up manualy with Konqueror etc.)

It just amazes me that on such a graphicaly rich distro, the default file browser is plug ugly.

  5. ......discovered several places where people talk about Creative ModemBlaster's being pieces of crap and not being able to get a fast connection with one. .......

For what it's worth, I have the exact same modem and have been nothing but happy with it. It works well, gives me good speeds and my conections remain stable for ever. I have left it on downloading for 19 hours without any drop in speed.

  6. Don't know what to say, it seems to be fixed. THe first time I had this problem, I realized that the mandrake nvidia RPM's hadn't been uninstalled correctly, so I removed them and it all worked. Some how, the mandrake nvidia RPM was back, I uninstalled it again and now everything works. Any idea how something like that could happen???

  7. All the /dev/nvidia* fields are read-write all users. I tried modprobe nvidia and it givesan error about taining the kernel and fails to load. What on earth dos that mean?

Also, I have tried two different versions. The accelerated driver instaled by the mandrake installer (yes, it installed an nvidia driver, NOT an nv driver) and 4363. I will try one more, whatever was right before 4363.

  8. The thing I hate about HP is the cost of ink is 150% to 300% of other brands. Even the generic cartriges cost more, though, I went shopping today and found HP's as low as $50.00 And one HP, the officejet 12xx (don't remember the xx) it is a printer/scanner/copier al in one and it's realy pretty small, not sure about drivers though.

  9. What I mean by locking up is actualy a couple things and it varies. Some times X just fails and it returns to a linux 3 type prompt. I'm happy whan that happens. Sometimes, X will try to load but the screen will fill with bizare symols and non-sense and then imediately become non-resonsive, to the point that all I can do is hit the reset button. ctrl-alt-dlt doesn't even work. ANd sometimes, It does the same thing, but the screen just goes black and stops.

As for starting linux 3, that's the only way I can boot into X. I start linux 3, login as root, re-instal the driver, logout, loging stephen, startX. When I try and startX before reinstalling the driver, it does just as I described before though I get back to a prompt more often, maybe half the tme. The error log has nothing useful. It either says the kernel module failed to load with no explanation of why, or it says there is an error on the last line that says EndSection and sometimes it tells me that there is no screen configured at all.

Also, you will notice that I have two lines refering to glx and one is commented out, and I also have a line for nvidia and one for nv but nv is commented out. This is just becaus ei have been switching back and forth so much trying to get it to work dependably, that I found it easier to just add or remove a "#" than to retype things. I have tried it without the commentd lines and it did not help, so they are not the problem.

  11. I just went through all the sme stuff. WHat you do, is enter a gateway of 0.0.0.0 or whatever non-sense you feal like entering, and then, once you are up and running, log in as root and open up /etc/sysconfig/network THe last line of that text file will say Gateway=0.0.0.0 just delete that entire line. Then you're done.

Who is your ISP? It may be that you need some customized PP argumentsfor your login. With MSN you have to enter your user name as MSN/username but that's all. Some others that make you use their own dialers in windows, require some LENGHT custom ogin arguments be entered under the custom PPP arguments tab. Also, how did you set up you KPPP? If you just went to KPPP and did it there, it won't work for you. Linux will assum your internet is via LAN and ignore your modem. What you will need to do in that case is go back to the Mandrake control center and open up the network conections tab (after removing the gateway line from you network file) and re-run the connection wizrd. It will configure multiple connections and then ask you whitch one is the one for the internet. After you dod this, you may need to remove the gateway line again, butthen you're done.

Let me know how it goes

  12. I thought I had this fixed, but I guess not. I've even formatted my hard drive and re-installed, not helpfull.

I am using the latest nvidia linux driver version 4363. I installed it via the nvidia self installer running in console mode (X not running). After install, I can startx and everything is great, but every time I reboot the system, it locks up trying to start X and I have to re-install the nvidia driver every single time I boot my system. And frankly, it's getting a litle rediculous. I'm using a Soyo k7v Dragon motherboard with the via chipset and an nvidia GeForce4 mx440 AGP w/64MB video ram. 256MB system RAM. AGP is set to 4x and the apature is set to 128. Iv'e also tried a smaller apeture and 2x in all possible combinations, so I think tht is probably irrelivent.

Any clue what on earth could cause this kind of error???

I was using a different mobo and video card untill a few days ago, and ever since I rebuilt my sys, i've had this problem.

    Any sugestions appreciated.

  13. So, my printer just died, what should I replace it with? I want color if possible. Also, two cartiges are better than 1, (i.e. one for color and one for black and white) And I'd like it to be as fast as possible and have the cheapest ink possible. So, for less than a $100 what do you reccomend? It's very important to me that it have a real linux driver. My old printer that just died, was only "sort-of" supported and was VERY SLOW.

  14. I don't blame you for wanting to dual boot, it just that I tried that, and it's a bit like loaning money to a drug addict. You do it to help, but it's realy not helping anyone. You will learn so much more and so much faster by just diving in.

I have always been considered a computer guru by eeryone I know and make a fair amount of money on the side building Windows machines to custom spec. But untill I tried linux, I never knew how much more there was out there to know. I have re-learned everything I thought I knew about hardware and networking and opperating systems, because I said to heck with it, and as soon as I knew I could boot, load X and connect tot he net, I dumped windows. Of course, I wouldn't switch untill you've got those three down, but I wouldn't wait a minute longer.

  15. I just recently came from windows my self, and you know what? The best advice I can give you, is make sure your hardware is supported and you can connect to the internet, then format your hard-drive and get rid of windows. If you dualboot, you will spend that much longer switching. Some times it's just best to dive in head first.

  16. It should. maybe try reinstalling tuxracer? Don't know what else. Are you using current drivers or the default ones that came with 9.1? you might try updateing.

  17. This is laughable. Even if MS continues the law suite, and even if it gets to a judge, even if they manage to prove to a judge that IBM linux contains source from SCO, there's no point, because Caldera (later to become SCO) PUT IT THERE THEMSELVES UNDER THE GPL!!!!

THe only way MS could make a go of this is to somehow prove that the GPL is illegal.

How many of you think a judge is gonna buy the "We released the source on accident" story?
