  1. I have actualy reinstaled mandrake now to see if that would fix the problem and it has made no difference.

As for bastilleInteractive. I can't find it anywhere.

On a hunch, I threw in a different nic, no dice. Then I swaped out the cable for the 3rd time, no dice. There must be some simple explanation to all of this. I can connect to my WiFi router with another device and ping my desktop. I can even enter it's IP in Opera and get the Apache page, but I can't get the damn thing to share it's internet. I've even dissabled my firewal, just in case.

  2. another much simpler possability is that your CD rom is not correctly installed. It may read Data just fine, but you need to have an audio cable running from your CDrom to your sound card or motherboard to play CD's with most linux apps. There may be some that just play through the ide bus, but none that I've used work that way.

  3. Well, some of it helps a litle...

First, putting in two nics would not help at all. I already have a router. i connect to the internet via a DIAL-UP MODEM, don't know why, people always seem to miss that. Anyhow, this is the only option short of buying a $1,000.00 router that has a built in modem or serial ports and built in sofware for dialing a ppp connection.

I will rty the uninstall everything network or internet related and start over method, but I competely fail to see how that could possibly be the best option.

  4. Let me explain my set-up.

I have my linux box set up as an internet gateway useing a dial-up modem. It is the gateway for all theother computers in my house. It's IP address is set to 192.168.1.1 in mcc.

it is connected to the WAN port on my router, whitch happens to be a WiFi router.

I ran drakGW to enable connection sharing between my ppp+ and eth0.

I can connect to my router just fine from anywhere in the house, but I can't connect for the internet or my linux box.

In the past, this configuration has always worked fine, but after my most recent re0install, it's not working.

When I check my connection in mcc, it shows an 'up' connection for eth0, but the IP field is blank. When I try to re-configure, the IP is correct there.

Also, when I try to re-run drakGW, it tells me shareing is allready configured but dissabled. If I choose to enable, nothing happens and if I choose to reconfigure I'm in the smae place.

I have used drak-sec and dissabled my firewall and I'm not running any new software.

here is the result of 'ifconfig'

    eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:50:2C:00:88:CD

    Any suggestions appreciated.

  5. Well, yes and no. I don't have a 2110, but I DO have a 1210. It's the cheaper version.

What I had o do was uninstall ALL of the hpoj drivers installed by mandrake, then I had to download and manualy install the latest version of the hpijs (HP in jet service) whitch is now at version 1.4.1 THat meant manulay compiling from source.

Once I had that, I had to compile the latest CVS version of hpoj. If you search for your printer at www.linuxprinting.org, it should cover all this. Anyway, once that is downloaded, compiled and installed, you need to set up the connection to your priter without touching the mandrake controll center, whitch will try and install the mandrake packages for hpijs and hpoj. THe command to do this is

     ptal-init setup

follow the prompts and it will register your printer with the hpijs and hpoj.

Now all you have to do is set up CUPS and you're off and running. If that was all over your head or if you have trpuble let me know. The 2110 is a litle differnt (Like I think it connects via lpt OR USB instead of just USB like my 1210) but I will help however I can.

    notes:

    1. you do NOT need to uninstall the hpijs drivers that are dfault. 1.4.1 can go right over the top.

    2. Use checkinstall. If you don't have checkinstall, GET checkinstall. f you don't know what it is, when you install software from source, at the point you would normaly type 'make install' you type 'checkinstall' and it will install it as an RPM, so you can remove it easily with mcc later on. Also makes .deb and one other.

  6. As we are trying to save the data, no, it has NOT been formatted in any way since the crash.

As for the MBR, that was basicaly my first thought, so, I through in my mandrake instalation CD and tried to 'f1 -> restore windows boot loader' and it all looked like it was going to work and then it said "input output error'

I tried the program mentioned earlier for restoring the partition tables, but it gave me a similar error, I'm thinking that the controller on the drive may have gone bad.

If anyone else has another idea, I'd love to hear.

  7. If you are thinking about getting an iPaq and installing linux, I'd say no. THe SHarp Zaurus already has linux on it with better hardware than the iPaq . Frankly, unless you already owned an iPaq, that is just a stupid way to go.

I personaly own a Zaurus and I like it realy well. Syncing with linux is hit and miss evenw ith it, but setting up networking through USB to the Zaurus isn't bad and then you have all sorts of options.

If you want full 'out of the box' sync support the only way to go is a Palm OS device. Period. Personaly I think you'd be happier with a Zuarus.

As for the BE-300, I would avoid it. It has it's advantages, but it runs windows CE, and CE is almost totaly incompatible with linux. The same goes for PocketPC's. (THey run a pretty interface on top of CE) THere is a program out there called SynCE that is made for syncing it with linux, but it is half way finished at best and I spent MONTHS trying to get it working and never could get anything. Even compiling it was a nightmare and you MUST compile a custom kernel to use it at all unless you have one of 2 models of PPC, and even then, it only might work. Also, I'm not sure if it works witht he BE-300 at all.

  8. Yes, the jumpers are correct. For the record, I build and sell custom computers, so you can probably skip human error on my part. This is a drive that was functioning perfectly in ihis computer. And it did not fail as a result of any changes that were made manualy.

Yes, I'm sure it's hdb. I'm sure of that becuase when I put it in my box I switched the jumper from master to slave and installed it as the primary slave with my primary master still in place so that I could run mandrake and try to retrive the data. Of course, I have not been able to do that yet. In the mean time he has bought another har drive and I've convinced him to go mandrake instead of windows.

  9. I'm not sure if this should be here, in hardware or in OT, but here it goes.

A firend of mine who is still useing Windows ME, just had his hard-drive crash, It 'apears' that the drive is still functional but badly corruppted. Of course, I could always fdisk it for him and install a real OS like mandrake (whitch I have him almost convinced of), but he REALY needs some of his personal files fromt hat drive. He of course didn't have a CD burner to backl up with, well, you get the point.

Anyway I have put that drive in my mandrake box as hdb and the comp knows it's there, but diskdrake won't recognize it. It has 2 partitions, a 20 gig and a 40 gig, both fat32. Are there any tools I could install on my mandrake box to retrieve his data?

  10. I have recently realized a few things.

    1. While most games are better on PC, my life is simpler if I just get them for a console and use the PC for important things.

    2. The slightly better graphics on a PC just don't make up for the ability to throw any game in the drive and know it will work instantly. (personal preference, and it helps to have an Xbox)

    3. While I hate MS< the Xbox kicks the crap out of the competition in every single concievable category with the one exception of game selection.

Just some stuff to think about.

  11. Yes, I saw that page, but it does not tell me anything useful. I have done what that page said, but I have not accomplished anything at all. neither the computer or the zaurus can see the other.

    I have a SL5500 running sharp ROM version 3.10

Unless I can get it to sync, I won't be able to install anything on it untill I get the time to recompile the kernal on my desktop so the card reader will work. Let's just say I'm not looking forward to spending 2-5 days fruitlessly trying to recompile a kernel that may or may not funciton at all......

I am planning on using kichen sync, but even there, I'm not sure what all I need to do.

Also, I have a WiFi card for the Z but all I can ever get it to do is say initializing, it won't ever make a solid connection. I can't tell you how frustrating that is. I have it set to non-specific essid and everything auto, and my router is set to provide all the tcp/ip info, yet it does not work.

  12. My Z arrived today. I'm having a lot of trouble wih the directions for setting up a connection with linux. It's not one particualr thing, it's just that all the instructions I've found assume a Master's degree in CS with decades of experience.

Can someone explain the following in PLAIN ENGLISH?

    1. How do I set up the desktop for a USB connection?

    2. How do I set up the Z?

  13. It looks like I'll be the proud owner of a sharp zaurus in about 30 minutes (you know ebay) and anyway, since this thread has been quiet while I was wondering what the final verdict is. Is it possible to use multisync with kde apps? will the zaurus work best with opie OZ or QT? ANy further discusion would be REALY appreciated.

  14. I have an all in one printer scanner copier that I like realy well, but it has it's drawbacks.

    Pros:

    $99

600dpi scanner (adequite for anything short of professional photographic work)

    printers very fast on draft

    prints very well on high

    one touch photo copying

    Cons:

it is a biatch to set up. (Well, it's not actualy that hard, just WAY more complicated than most printers, if you go with it, I'll help you out though)

not a stand-alone fax, so you will need a modem and third party software to fax, but that's realy not such a big deal.

    HP psc1210

If you're going onto a windows box, seting up the rpinter is a breeze, and like I said, I'd be happy to help you with the setup if you need it, or you could just find my printer threads in the hardware forum, the answers are all there.

  15. I'm not familiar with that particular mobo, so I can't help without morte info, but I can say this: It's almost certainly because it's using the wrong driver. Find out what soundcard you have (yes, I know it's built in, but it's still a sound card. My built in is a C-media somethingorother)

Once we have that info, it's probably pertty easy to fix.

  16. I also use mandrake, and as others posted, my biggest reason is, it works. BAsicaly I had tried a couple other distros, and had trouble. THe last one before mdk, was a hdinstall of knoppix debian. THat was great, and I loved apt-get, butI had other problems. A guy over at http://www.knoppix.net/forum suggested mandrake and actualy sent me some CD's for an older version, whitch insprired me to order the 9.0 power pack and most reacently the cheap-bytes 9.1 3-CD set. I also like the default theme realy well. seems very unified, very 'together'

  17. I love it. The idiot's forgot they stole the code then sued when they realized there was overlapping code. What a bunch of retards. You know, there's a halfway house on my street for the mentaly disabled, and there is one particularly disabled gentleman there who drools a lot and likes to stand behind the screen dor naked, and I don't think he's that dumb.

  18. No, not quite, I want people on the local network, running windows boxes, to be able to share printers WITHOUT any login or password. i.e, I want to allow annonymous conections.

Let me explain why. My girlfriend's laptop runs XP and her login is her full legal name with punctuation and spacing. So, to set up a unix login on my box with the same name is impossible, so I would have to set up a new user on her computer, transfer all the files and settings she has now to the new user and then delete the current user. That's kind a of a pain in the ass.
