1. Yes, Thank you Cedbor. That is the version of flash that I currently run. I've installed Opera 9.27 today and it pretty much jacked up everything. I will remove Opera again and then re-install it, to see if that helps any. I'll post the results on my initial post.
2. I've had smiliar problems with my WD Mybook(NTFS) would like to know if there is a fix for this. Most of the time, I end up rebooting my laptop and I guess HAL mounts the drive.
3. Has anyone noticed how well Opera and Flash are working now. I don't know what I did but here are the facts. 1. Installed a brandnew 2008.1 Free dvd on my laptop. All i did was upgrade the nvidia kernel and the linux kernel 2. Installed Opera 9.26 3. Installed Flash(don't know what version to be honest, but was found on PLF maybe a month ago or more) 4. Visited Youtube and would get the dreaded GRE(A)Y screen, if I changed TABS, or minimized the browser. Charts on FINANCE.GOOGLE.COM would not appear, all you would get is the gray screen. 5. Installed Opera 9.5 beta, charts on finance worked but youtube would get those screens. 6. Installed the newest flash, and it screwed up vids on both Opera 9.5 and Firefox, it looke like it was rendering a scene at a time 7. Removed newest flash and Opera, and installed the previous versions 8. Enabled compiz(using MLCC it installed whatever packages it need for those cool effects, which I only ran for a day) 9 Opera as a whole just seems to run way better now. Even engadget, which would lag whenever i scrolled from top to bottom, it still does, but its not as bad, I had to resort to using FIREFOX. Any Ideas as to what could have happened? I haven't done any updates or removed anything but the stuff I mentioned. In anyway, Opera is rocking now
4. I'm looking forward to it too. I can't wait for 2008.1 to come out, especially the GnomeOne edition. Although, I will say that the current Hardy (ithink alpha or beta stage) looks way better than any previous ubuntu versions.
5. Vicky, do you have the right video drivers installed? I thought I did, when I first installed MDV2008, and video played fine when the window was small but the moment I went fullscreen the video was choppy. Once I installed the newer Nvidia drivers all went well. Hope that helps some.
6. You're ranting on and on and on about linux. Why? I'm no fan boy of any particular OS, I believe they all have their strengths and weaknesses. But to come on this forum and start ranting about it linux and its failures, how about ranting about YOUR failure to get it up and running. How about asking for some help, instead of running your mouth off. I'm no linux expert, never have been, and never will, doesn't mean I'm going to give up and whine when something ain't working as expected. If you want help how about you post this. 1. Make and Model 2. OS you're using or wanting to use 3. Hardware on your system 4. What exactly isn't working. Maybe then, you'll get the answers you need, with the help of THIS COMMUNITY.
7. Darth Wong I'd say Opera is the greatest browser on Windows. For linux i'd say Firefox, everything seems to work better like "FLASH." OSX, i'd say El Camino even though its FF on roids. Nexus, how is 9.26 handling say youtube videos, i'd get grey/gray screens if i clicked on another tab and came back to it.
8. There's nothing wrong with it being French, I will continue to tell myself that it's BRAZILIAN, nothing wrong with lying to myself :P I read elsewhere that its an opera problem because it doesn't support the newer flash. If you have 9.25(i think thats the latest) downgrade to an earlier version of flash. On the flipside, you could upgrade to 9.5beta and all should work well with the new flash version. I haven't tried it out myself, thats what I read. I understand that the hdlist.cz files are way bigger, but could you explain to me why downloading files using those mirrors were fast but loading the hdlist.cz took ages?
9. Well, when you add the urpmi using konsole you normally do this urpmi.addmedia main ftp://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrakelinux...ia/main/release with media_info/hdlist.cz thats fine and all but, it would appear to me as though konsole would freeze or time out. It would also give me issues using MCC. I understand that one of two things could be happening, 1 the server is slow or 2 MCC is not working correctly. if you imput that link into your browser you'll see that the "hdlist.cz" file is pretty big, over a meg in size. so i figured that if my path to that server was slow then i should pick another and another and another. they all give me a huge problem until i went with this urpmi.addmedia main ftp://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrakelinux...ia/main/release with media_info/synthesis.hdlist.cz if you look at the file its about a third in size(synthesis.hdlist.cz) adding the urpmi repos went a lot faster, and when i began to download rpms i was able to get them really quick. i don't know if this may help you. i think the only difference is one includes a discription and the the other doesn't.
10. Mandriva Users, I've been an Off and On user of Mandriva Linux ever since 2005LE came out. I've tried a handful of distributions ranging from Ubuntu to Mepis to OpenSuse to Mandriva to PCLinuxOS etc. I've never really had a full fledged Linux PC or laptop for that matter, but the only ones I've really considered keeping were Mandriva, Suse, and Ubuntu. They all have their strengths and weaknesses as everybody whose played around with them would say. Here's my story on Mandriva. Like I said earlier, 2005LE was the first Mandriva product I had ever tried. It was an amazing OS, everything worked out of the box on my Gateway laptop, including the 3d acceleration with my Radeon 9600. Amazing. But then, I heard the horrible news, Mandriva, was a FRENCH product. Noooooooooooo! It's true folks, as an American, I could not use this “evil product†ever again. Out it went. Foolish I know, but hey, thats what happened, plus, in order to be on our network you had to have XP Pro. Anyways fast forward to August 07, Mandriva has a Spring Live CD, I figure I should try this out on my brand new HP DV6500LE. From what I could see, everything appeared to work except for my 8400GS and my audio. Needless to say, the CD went into the trash. At this point in time due to kernel versions and alsa, newer hardware wouldn't function properly. Hey 3 years on and off, I'm still a “newb,†thats fine with me. I finally began to read the descriptions found at distrowatch.com, where it talks about the packages included with each distro, I guess I should have done that long ago, but whatever I do it now. Fast forward one more time to February 08, I decided to order me a copy of Mandriva 2008 from osdisc.com(thought it was the powerpack.) The only reason I bought it was because it, to me was the latest and greatest, and is now Brazilian, I'll fight anyone who says its still French!;) So I get my DVD in the mail and decided to install it. Urpmi was a pain in the a**. Konsole was taking forever and a day to set up. MCC sucked, it would freeze all the time. I did manage to get some PLF repos installed and was able to install the greatest browser on earth Opera and Flash, and win32 codecs, you name it, I had a fully functioning laptop. I did have a few problems though, flash wasn't working right and video playback was choppy. On day two, I decided to reinstall Mandriva, and i soon discovered the syntheis.hdlist.cz, wow konsole was flying, MCC wasn't freezing anymore, I had everything working fine within about an hour and a half. I'm afraid to do a system update because I don't know how long it will take to get my system up to date. Only problem I had was 3d acceleration, why wouldn't it work, I mean MCC detects it correctly, what is the problem. I found Adam W's blog and tried his method method, and boy did it fail. Just before I threw in the towel I told myself I had to give it another try. I read his blog entry over and over and over again. This time it worked, I had selected the wrong packages the first time around. My video playback isn't as good as it was in Vista by no means, but its a lot better now with the nvidia driver. For those of you considering Mandriva, Give it a shot. Let this be a lesson to everybody, with a little hard work, google, and the community, you should be able to have a working desktop. As for myself, I've only got a few more kinks to iron out and i should be set, I might even try out gnome. Don't give up on Mandriva or any other Distro out there, believe me, it won't give up on you, all the answers you need are a few keystrokes away.
11. i finally got my copy of Mandriva2006 PowerPack and got it running on my Gateway 7422GX, and it runs awesome. Now, believe it or not but my ATI 9600 was running like a champ then i installed thacs rpm and i don't know it made much of a difference or not. Im gonna go ahead and say it did(so i can feel like "I" accomplished something. Next up was my Call of Duty installation. I downloaded the Loki installer and COD was actually running on my Linux laptop, holy freaking sh*t. So far i've got 3D acceleration and the greatest FPS on earth running, n.ext was dvd and all other video and audio playback. I tried installing VLC a hundred an two times but to no avail. I tried using the test version found on PLF but it would ask me for a different dependency. I'd try to install that missing dependency but it would give me another, so i said screw it and gave in to mPlayer, its alright but i do perfer VLC hands down. At this point I've got 3D/COD/DVD/AUDIOANDVIDEO next on my list is the IPOD. I was thinking about getting BANSHEE but decided not to because hey amaroK has iPod support right? Well i was able to look through the playlists and artists but, for some reason whenever i placed them in a new playlist ml_ipod would show up. now i use ml_ipod with winamp because winamp kicks ass. i decided to let it slide so now i have a laptop that i'm 80 percent satisfied with, the only things getting under my skin are that damn annoying startup sound, keymapping that i havent taken care of yet, COD crashes(rarely happens), and my lack of vlc. now what do i do?
12. as napolean would say "YESSSSS' http://rpm.nyvalls.se/index2006.0.html has just been added to my bookmark.
13. well, that kinda blows.
14. I don't see what the problem would be. But thanks for the answer.
15. I was told that somebody by the name of Thac is the man when it comes to rpms. I was also told that he stopped making them for mandriva and is making them for PCLINUXOS. It is my understanding that PCLinux is like a Mandriva variant, is this true? If so, will Thacs new PCLinux RPMS work on Mandriva 2006. By the way, im a total newb and the proud owner or MANDRIVA 2006, well, once I get it in the mail. Laters.
16. im thinking about ordering this. http://linuxcentral.com/catalog/index.php3...d_code=L000-495 should i go ahead and order from these guys, what do you guys think? one more thing will i be able to get mp3 and video support from these 7 cds? or this. http://www.linuxcd.org/view_item.php?id_di...b03daf7a4936b5c whats the difference, and don't say well one has 7 discs and the other has four. why does one have more than the other? thx.
17. well i reinstalled RC2 and its working sorta ok. my mouse is driving me nuts so i decided to skip it and go onto my ati drivers. i don't have 3d support yet so thats what im working on now. i installed cedega and point2play and they work, i was also able to install cod using loki. i'll keep you posted. ps KONSOLE is kicking my a$$. later AHAHAHA im going nuts, i've installed the latest ati driver yet when i run point2play it tells me my video card manufacturer is MESA PROJECT, type Mesa GLX Indirect, no video ram. i think im gonna ram my head against the wall. i quit linux for the day.
18. I agree about the Easy-Urpmi, but I cannot connect my laptop to my network. Something about mac filtering that won't let me, i've tried awhile back. anyways, when i was installing 2006 RC2 my wireless mouse was working, a bit choppy, but working. when i booted into KDE, all i got was up and down and insane clicking. Im thinking about installing 2005 since i have the dvd. but i rather spend all my shift looking for info on 2006 and its setup. i was finally able to get to the right folder(imwheel) using Konsole, but i couldn't configure because i had not C compiler, go figure, i spent all shift trying to get my damn mouse to work. I just about slammed my laptop on the ground. I was able to install CEDEGA perfectly, i also installed dvd playback, i've just got a couple more things to do. i think i should have gone into this with a plan. i should have set a priority list and try to tackle one at a time, its all part of the learning experience though. thanks for your help and support guys.
19. Nevermind, i didn't read the pop up, it asked if i wanted to install two dependencies, and i hit yes and it installed it. I think i have what i need, so far. Im racking my brain with imwheel right now. playing with linux makes a 12hour shift short. BTW is there a site like PACKMAN for suse but for mandrake instead? I was looking at clubmandriva, is that worth it?
20. alright this is my fourth try at linux, and let me tell you, its been fun/annoying at times. I've tried u(k)buntu, mandriva le 2005, and now 2006. Im not able to connect to the internet with my linux box so i have to download rpms using XP and saving then installing on my box. heres the problem, i got a urpmi from P.L.F. and i decided to download all the files in the directory. i was under the impression that it contained every single thing i would need to have multimedia working properly but needless to say when i went to install the the rpms i downloaded, it said i had several dependencies missing and that i had to get them. Is there a way for me to know what dependencies i'll need before hand? I found a SUSE site that listed programs, and its dependencies, but i haven't found anything like that for mandriva. Should I go ahead and install LE instead of 2006 since its been out for sometime and it would have more rpms? any help would be greatly appreciated.
