  1. I am perplexed as to what has happened to your system. I personally at this point would reboot my machine with the first CD in it and do an upgrade of 10. This might not be the best thing to do but I have come to the end of my experience in this direction. Someone out there may have a better solution. As far as I know an upgrade will replace the missing bits, but I offer no guarantee. It shouldn't take very long to do but don't rush into this option. I've got to go to work now but I'll look in a little later.
  2. Hi terrencethecat get a listing of the files in /usr/bin/ (using konqeror or whatever) and check if the file drakconf is listed, it is a PERL Program. If it's there, check its permissions eg mine is rwxr-xr-x.
  3. Check out this http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=16364 It occurred to me that you must be almost exactly opposite to me on this planet, the internet sure makes this a small world.
  4. We've become a little side traked here java script:emoticon(':P') We can come back to menudrake What about trying this in a terminal window? (as root) /usr/sbin/drakconf
  5. try typing in the full path name /usr/bin/menudrake
  6. try this Open a konsole window - Star /System/Terminals/Konsole (Terminal Program) and become the root user by typing "su" and enter root password. As root run "menudrake". You may not get any further than before but you may also get some feedback as to why the command fails to run.
  7. Which bit did you try before nothing happened?
  8. Have you tried looking in "menudrake"? Press Alt & F2 at the same time to bring up the "Run Command" window and type in "menudrake", click on the "Options>>" button and run the command as root. Click on "System menu" and check to see if the "Mandrake Control Center" option is still listed there. Let us know how you are getting along.
  9. Hi Cristjan I use my own icons for each user and I store them in each person's home account. So for user1 I place their icon in /home/user1 (or wherever you like). I use the the KDE Control Centre - System/Login Manager (you need root access to make changes here). On the "Users" tab at the right side is a box "User images" click on the drop down list and choose the user you wish to change. Click on the icon which will bring up a window that allows you to choose an icon or navigate to a new location where you can choose whatever icon you want. I place my icons in the user's home accounts so that when I upgrade the user's icon stay in their home directories and are hence not lost. Also each user can modify their own login icon without needing root access. Hope this helps.
  10. This may sound simple to people who are hardened emailers, but how do I send the same email to several people so that each on of the recipients do not know that the others have have been sent the same email. I am using KMail 1.6.1 in M/d 10, can this be done in KMail? I have seen something about a folder holding mailing lists but I don't understand how (if) I can use this. I realise that I can us the BCC but I want the recipient to see their address in the "To" line so that they don't think that they are receiving spam. Thanks for your help.

    Xscreensaver

I use xscreensaver and have for several years. I have a file in my home directory "~.kde/Autostart/start-xscreensaver.sh". Make sure it is executable , mine is rwxrwxr_x. This file contains one line "xscreensaver -nosplash" (without the quote marks). Disable the screensaver in kde and you should be in business, it starts with KDE. I use the run command (Alt-F2) xscreensaver-demo to set preferences. Much better (imho) than the standard KDE screensavers
  12. Problem solved a line in my XF86Config-4 had been changed by the installation of the fonts Section "Files" # Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together) # By default, Mandrake 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of # the X server to render fonts. FontPath "unix/:-1" EndSection The Fontpath line had been replaced with a couple of new lines detailing other paths to various font directories. Thanks for your help bvc it put me on the right path to a solution
  13. I am using Mandrake 10. Last night I installed a new font from Windoze after clicking on the font file with Konqueror ad clicking on the install button, it reported back that the font had been installed, no problem. This morning when I tied to start the computer it logged into a command line mode, (after showing the Nvidia splash screen three times instead of the usual once). When I tried to startx it came back with the message "could not open default font 'fixed' ". I have not made any changes to the XF86Config or any other files. I assume that the two events are related. Can anybody shed some light on this problem, I haven't a cue where to start looking to fix this problem. (apart from a re install which seem OTT) Thanks for any help you are able to give me (I currently logged in from my work place computer)
  14. I've used Pause/Break at boot up, you can pause the bios start to read whats on the screen ans esc to restart it
  15. Problem solved. I reconnected the mouse using the USB connection instead of the PS/2. I've had no problem since (so far)
  16. Hi mdg /dev/mouse is simply a symbolic link to /dev/psaux. I assume Mandrake have just made a minor change here. My XF86Config-4 in 9.2 was /dev/psaux. Thank you for your suggestion.
  17. Thanks for your response John. Originally I used "Generic PS2 Wheel Mouse" which gave me an entry in my XF86Config-4 Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection The same as I used in 9.2. I took your suggestion to "use any usb/ps2 mouse"' that gave me : Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7" EndSection ...but alas still the same.
  18. I'm having trouble with my cursor movement. When I boot the system sometimes the cursor moves just fine for the amount that I move the mouse other times (and this happens sometimes and not others) it is like the cursor is in treacle. Normally I need to move the mouse about 25mm to get the cursor to move from the bottom of the screen to the top but when I goes "odd" I need to move the mouse 400mm to achieve the same movement. Sometimes it is fine for four or five boot ups and then its not until I reboot once, twice sometimes three of four times. I have tried different configurations Generic PS2 Wheel Mouse and Microsoft Explorer (which is what it is) but both work sometimes and then the same problem has occurred. I've only experienced this problem since installing Mandrake 10, I've used every release from 7.2 and not run into this problem before now. I recall reading somewhere that problems can occur when using a USB mouse with a PS2 connection but I don't know. If anybody can help with this I would be extremely grateful as I am finding this very frustrating, its so random.
  19. Thanks for the quick reply cannonfodder. I'm heading for a terminal window now. :D
  20. Hi Can anybody tell me if there is an easy/quick way of converting file names from from upper to lower case letters and vice-versa. I have some programmes that run on both Windoes and Linux but the data files have not been set up correctly to deal with case sensitive file names. Its a bit of a fag having to retype each one individaully. Thanks for any help you may be able to give. (I'm running Mandrake 9.2, if that makes any difference)
  21. Thanks for sharing your experiences with me I have a much better idea of what to expect now. It would be a pain to be locked out of the system because my numbers weren't right. I just have to do it now. :D
  22. I currently have a partition scheme: hdb5, empty (3.8Gb) hdb6, empty (7.9Gb) hdb7, /home hdb8, /data hdb9, / hdb10, /swap What I want to do is to spilt the hdb6 into two partitions. What do I need to maintain my system? Will I have trouble with the new partition numbers or what? How should I go about it? Do I need to alter my fstab or any other files to cope with this change? Thanks for looking and any answers are much appreciated
  23. Thanks for the quick reply :D You are right ramfree17, qnr's reply was very simple and when I saw it I realised I had used the inittab before to do the same thing. (how one forgets these things...) Yes bvc SuSE is very nice, this is the first time I have looked at it and I'm impressed. So nvidia drivers now installed and away I go, thanks once more.
  24. I feel really stupid asking this simple question but I have been unable to find the answer myself so far. I am looking at SuSE 9.0, I want to boot into the command line rather than gui but I cannot find where to tell SuSE that I want to do this (such as the control centre in mandrake). I gather I can do this at the boot prompt in GRUB somewhere, but again I don't know where/how. A few pointers would be much appreciated and welcome. Thanks
  25. Thank you for your help everybody :D I feel alot happier about going down this road after what I have read here.
