  1. Closed out any sound devices that I know of (mixer) and went to MCC, and this is what is listed for the sound card. SB Audigy LS Module: snd-ca0106 I stopped and started the alsa service, went to "sound system" in desktop configuration, disabled/enabled sound and when I clicked "test" I got the error message listed in previous post. The window "locked up" and I had to kill that. **sigh** That's where it is now. [copy of preceding post removed by spinynorman - please use 'add reply' button]
  2. I took a "Creative Blaster Live! 24 bit" out of my other computer and put in this one. Disabled onboard sound in bios and did a clean install of 2005Le. Just now booted up and there is an issue with this one now. Here's the info so far on what I know of this one. When it booted to desktop I got a "Short Description" message that said, "The application sound server (artsd) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV). " I have no clue what that is. Have no clue where to start looking yet. Still have to check the printer to see if that works. Will post what I find and if there are any suggestions on present sound card, I'm open for them. Thanks
  3. O.k..here's where it's at now. I pulled up a console as root, typed in fuser -v /dev/dsp and it said "No such file or directory" If I run "alsaconf", then go to sound system and disable then enable sound then apply, I have sound. If I simply do a reboot, the sound will be there but if I shut down or reboot into windows then come back, no sound.

    Printer Problem

spoke too soon. When I rebooted and tried to print, back to square one. I deleted and added printer again through cups, still nothing.
  5. Renaming the file did nothing where as the sound is concerned. I've been to the Mandriva tools and changed the sound driver back and forth of the 2 that it originally gave me a choice for. It's listing my sound card as ICH2 810 Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller and for Driver it has"Module i810_audio" listed now with and Alternative drivers: snd-intel8x0 Where do I check for a newer version of "arts" ? Thank you

    Printer Problem

This problem seems to be resolved at this point. Actually I don't know what I did other than: 1. In trying to work on sound problem mentioned in other post, renamed .kde file and rebooted. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. 2. Did what you said, but I did absolutely nothing while I was there. When I tried to click on "Set as Default" under "Printers", it gives me Prompt to put in a user and password for cups. I typed in my user and password(s) and it didn't accept them. I've run across that elsewhere so please give me an idea what that is about and how I can change something there if I need to. Thank You

    Printer Problem

New install of 2005LE. Printer is an HP Deskjet 940C attached to Parallel port. Printer is attached to parallel port. Linux sees it and has installed it. When I try to print from any application or a test print, it goes through the motions of sending to the printer, but it doesn't print. I checked it in KDE>Peripherals>Printers and when I do a "test page" from there, it says "Test Page Successfully sent to Printer HPDesjet940C" I've gone to the Mandrake Control Center, removed it, added it and the "State" says it's Enabled. Printer does work. I've had a couple other distros on this machine and it printed o.k. as well as in XP Pro on the other boot. I have done searches regarding this issue, but haven't found what applies to this situation. Thanks,
  8. Preliminary info: Fresh install of Mandiva-Linux 2005 LE on a dual boot system with XP Pro absolutely no known hardware problems in XP Pro Board: Intel Corporation D845WN AAA64181-203 2.40 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 1024 Megabytes Installed Memory SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio No sound when booted up. If I do "alsaconf", choose the snd-intel8x0, then go to Menu>System>Configuration>Configure Your Desktop>Sound System and then uncheck and recheck "Enable Sound System" and apply, then I'll have sound till the next shut down or if I reboot and go to Windows and then back to Linux. The only reason I knew what to do about the above was that the first distro of Linux I tried, "Mepis" I had that problem and I had help to get as far as I did, but it never got resolved. I have since installed Kubuntu and I had no problems at all with the sound in that distro. When I boot up, I do get the message as soon as the desktop comes up, " Sound Server information Message, Error while initializing sound driver. Device can't be opened (no such device). The Sound Server will continue using Null Output Device" So for I'm liking this version and would like to solve this sound issue. Please keep in mind that although I have used a few other distros, I am still very very new at this, so please be specific in any instructions that you may offer. I have done searches for this problem and found quite a few posts about sound problems, but nothing that I felt pointed me in the direction of resolving my problem although I am continuing to search more. Thank you.
  9. Whoops.... one last one. Do I want the i586 or the x86 or does it make a difference? Again, I'm running a 2.4 ghz processor on an intel board (P4)
  10. Thanks everyone... "I'll be back"
  11. I thought that one wasn't free? Maybe I read wrong.
  12. Thank you for your reply I think I will give this a try. I've been doing a bit more reading on it. One last question. Is it the "Mandriva Linux 10.1" that I should download and install? I am using an Intel based board with an Intel 2.4 ghz processor.
  13. Hi, I'm pretty new at Linux. Though I am very well versed in MS OSs, I know very little with regards to Linux. Over the past week I've been trying some different distros of it. So far I've installed Mepis, Ubuntu and presently have Kubuntu. I have mixed emotions about all of them at this point and can't say that any of them are reaching out to grab my total attention. I really want/need to learn Linux and I'm looking for one that will be "The One". Right now I have my system set up as a dual boot with XP Pro using the "Grub" that came with the Ubuntu/Kubuntu distros. Question 1: Ease of installation. Would the Mandrake installation be able to use/reuse the existing Grub or will I have to do something else for the dual boot? Although I do have things backed up, I really don't want to risk any more than I have a reinstall WinXP. Question 2. Ease of use compared to the other distros I've mentioned. Is the learning about the same, harder or easier? (opinions) Question 3. Support. Though I've seen the "Mandrake Linux" name considerably more often over the years than the other distros, how is the support in general? Thank in advance
