Ok, it did complete ok. Nice and fast too. Now if I can just find a product that works that will allow me to burn the iso to a dvd. :sad:

I never used to like gnome, then I just decided to switch and stick with it. Now I like it :)

It may be the only viable option as this kde4 virus continues to grow. :sad:

Just as Vista was the best thing to have happened to Linux, kde4 might be the best thing that has happened to gnome.

Yep, got that part working. What I can't get working is to bring up konqueror in supervisor mode with a specific profile. (like a filemanager one) I would like to have this as a menu entry, which is how I have had it in previous releases. I actually have konqueror on my menu twice, one instance for normal usage and one instance for supervisor mode (root) usage.

I finally downloaded the pwp dvd and now I can't burn it to a dvd. k3b computes the checksum (takes forever) and then says that it can't unmount the dvd (which isn't mounted anyway) and terminates. This is getting old. Is there some other product I can use to burn a dvd? There sure is a lot of stuff in this release that doesn't work.

You don't need msttfonts. I don't have it, and my fonts look great :)

The only one I did not have installed of the 32 bit ones was: fonts-ttf-bitstream-vera

Vuze/Azureus seems to be working fine. The PWP DVD has been download/uploading for over an hour without any problems. Neither Opera nor KTorrent could last over 5 minutes.

fyi after doing:

and changing the menu entry to: kdesu konqueror --profile FileManager (trying both run as a different user of root and alsy trying with unchecking that box) and konqueror does not come up.

If I put konqueror --profile FileManager within quotes I get the following:

It almost acts like there is more than one konqueror on my system. No combination of anything seems to let me bring up konqueror as root.

(I also couldn't post this in Opera. It ignored clicking on the Add Reply button I'm beginning to think that 2009.0 is just saturated with land mines.)

By the way, all I had to do to get onboard sound working was just to enable it in the bios. I had disabled it ages ago to avoid any problems. 2009.0 recognized it immediately. Pidgin audible alerts work fine, but I can't seem to get a chirp out of Opera for email alerts.

I'll paste the output of: lspci | grep audio when I get home after work.

On 2009.0 I was trying to restore a file from backup and I had to tell mondorestore that my dvd was at /dev/dvd. It seems in the past that it was /dev/cdrom.

Also, I kicked off a backup yesterday which balked when it came time to write the files to dvd. I looked in the script and it was referencing /dev/cdrom. So, I changed the "cdrom" to "dvd" and kicked it off again this morning when I left for work. I won't know if it worked until I get home.

I see that /etc/fstab also is showing /dev/cdrom.

Also, when I put a dvd in the system, I no longer get a popup asking me what I want to do with it.

So, has there been some intentional change regarding how a dvd device is actually referenced in /dev?

I have over 100 GB unused space. That should be enough. I didn't try Azureus. KTorrent should have been able to handle it and with fewer resources. My buddy just reminded me that in the errata or in something (some link I sent to him) there is a mention of a network problem in 2009.0, and mentions the package to remove if one encounters a problem. I have to find that reference and go from there.

I understand there is an issue with the network manager. I need to find the reference somewhere so I can see what to uninstall/install.

I had a very similar problem, but in Gnome. The display improved a lot after installing msttfonts package as described here:

Yeah, I had held on to that package in my home directory so I installed it last night. Now I just have to go into each application and set the fonts to use, I guess. The problem is that I don't remember which fonts I was using for what in 2008.1. Maybe I can recover the Opera config file from an old backup. Likewise with Gnumeric, etc.

I had forgotten about msttfonts. Thanks. (I am using the KDE equivalent.)

So far in 2009.0 I haven't found a way to edit a file after SU'ing to root.

If I try to start konqueror from a menu entry as root with "konqueror --profile FileManager" it doesn't come up and I get the following error in a popup dialog box: "file:///root/.kde4/share/apps/konqueror/autosave/owned_by." That error keeps popping up until I kill the process.

If I try to execute kwrite from a shell after suing to root i get:

"kdeinit4: preparing to launch /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/klauncher

klauncher(19584) kdemain: No DBUS session-bus found. Check if you have

started the DBUS server.

kdeinit4: Communication error with launcher. Exiting!"

At the moment, the only thing I can think of doing is to log on as root, and I don't want to have to do that.

i think it is all related to that kde4 virus.

Ok, got the onboard sound working (AC97). I didn't get the old SoundBlaster card working. But with the onboard sound, I can get rid of the old SoundBlaster card, freeing up a slot.

if you have ugly fonts in opera, go the the following address: opera:config#UserPrefs|EnableCoreXFonts and disable core x fonts

They were already disabled. Maybe I should try enabling them. I doubted that that had anything to do with it though. It is not just in Opera that things look bad. Spreadsheets in gnumeric also.

Well, the issue seems to be 2009.0. After downloading for a few minutes KTorrent crashes also. Maybe if I can get VirtualBox installed, I can use Windows to download 2009.0. A sad state of affairs.

I had gone to the Opera site to get my browser fix before I had the repositories set up. I could try urpme"ing" it and then installing Opera from the repositories to see if the same thing happens. Maybe I'll try that first just to see. Thanks for the tip.

Vuze (azureus) is working fine on 2009.0 this is what I'm using.

Ok thanks, I'll install it when I get home and give it a shot. Maybe the problem is with Opera 9.6.

No, its KDE. (3.x I think, but there is still 4.x junk on the system.) Just wondering if I have to install something. All the hidden config files for everything (gnumeric, opera, etc, etc.) should still be there pointing to whatever fonts they used to use. My thinking was that these fonts must no longer exist.

I was downloading the pwp dvd version of 2009.0 using Opera's bittorrent. It was really slow. I had forgotten to open up the ports in the firewall. So I opened them up and Opera took off and was downloading really fast -- until it crashed. I tried it three times, and after a couple of minutes Opera crashes while doing bittorrent downloads. I guess I'll try Azureus (Vuze now or something like that) and see if that works. Not sure if the problem is Opera or 2009.0 with the bittorrent downloads. I never had any such Opera problems with 2008.1.
