  1. does booting up with the kernel option video=vesa help? at least you would have a graphical system and then a chance to play with drax11 and new drivers
  2. once you have shrunk some space, no need to make the partitions in that free space, mandriva will do it for you. Do be sure to have a /home partition separate from the OS which will live in / Sizewise for / 6 to 10 Gb is enough Swap about 2x memory size you already have links to mandy doc as a newbie if you google for rute+linux guide and linux newbie admin guide, these are 2 good references to help you in your learning curve I do not know if you feel you had enough information regarding dual boot with XP. I do not have xp, so no direct experience Saying that you can choose where the bootloader is going (C and D becomes hda and hdb probably) that is at the start of HD C or D I assume Zinblows on C then you could install grub (the all mighty bootloader) on hdb and set the bios to boot from hdb (which in turn can boot hda) this way no tempering with C This is my preferred solution have a read also http://www.geocities.com/epark/linux/grub-w2k-HOWTO.html Have a think or ask more on this
  3. The dvd is currently available as a BT (dual arch) Because of the size, I doubt it will ever be available as a direct download
  4. if you search for "what to expect from 64 bits linux" in this forum I posted a link to an article it goes in ianw1974'd direction and it is an intro to 32 vs 64, you can make your mind based on the article
  5. Hi, I want to learn how to decrease/increase font size when in single user mode (and change to 132 columns) in mandy 2005 LE I am looking for a command line. vga=ask for grub does the job during boot but then it seems init.d or something reverts to some mandriva default size font (and number of columns) I have read about toe, stty, setterm, env Infocmp takes the -w argument Setterm takes -linewrap on but nothing about 132 columns This has left me very confused as to how fonts are initialised in single mode. Any idea? Thanks [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  6. thanks for the help eventually found emails and list were there Why is it called abc, no idea, nevermind $ ls .kde/share/apps/kabc distlists lock/ std.vcf std.vcf_1 std.vcf_2 std.vcf_3 std.vcf_4 std.vcf_5 std.vcf_6 std.vcf_7 I had to use this bad bash script (could grep but would not tell me which file), so j tells me which file it was find . -type f | while read i; do { j=$[ $j+1 ] echo $j #cat $i | xargs ls -l | grep -v "No such file or directory" cat $i | grep toto } done; Very much like your grep -iR foobar `pwd` thanks again
  7. Well you may just want to try KDE (Do you know how to do that?) waht mandriva version have you got? is this 2006 by any chance? The file association I believe is specific to KDE (but maybe not), so if you double click on an html file in nautilus say, this will launch whatever but probably not newest version of firefox even if you had done the konqueror step Presumably konqueror will run under gnone (never tried) if all the library are installed just start a terminal and type konqueror see if this works, at least you will discover konqueror not using gnome, so little idea more than that as I said before you can install opera as a spare backup browser
  8. I am trying to find in which configuration file my distribution lists in kmail are stored (and the emails in plain text as well while I am at it) (need to do that because I want to use a .kde backup) No luck within (unless I am not cherching well) ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc or kontactrc ~/.kmailrc nor with google I might cat the whole .kde directory and grep a known string (might work) Thanks
  9. but you can consider having a 64 bits system, with some chroot? environment being all 32 bits, or having both 32 + 64 libraries, not that I could explain how to do it What you should (and shouldn't) expect from 64-bit Linux http://enterprise.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/09/07/1632253 Not a perfect intro to 64 vs 32 bits, but some background anyway
  10. google for easyurpmi then folow instruction to add sources for urpmi do choose PLF because it is the only one having probably all the codecs then drakrpm (and install mplayer) also see codecs section for mplayer.hq I hope this launch you in the right direction
  11. http://www.linuxlookup.com/2006/sep/26/man...x_2007_released and below it says Update: "Mandriva Linux 2007 will be released in a couple of days" --Mandriva Mass hype?
  12. you can remove it without removing anything else excuse the command line, but because it is universal, and a good learning exercise, here goes as root rpm -e --nodeps firefox_name_ofprm.rpm (the nodeps is very important, check the man page, man rpm for the excact syntax) see my previous hint konqueror / sub menu preference or option it is called then change the settings in konqueror for files association type txt (then subtype html) to point to new firefox version) this add application, then make it top of the list Hope it makes sense (it will once you have found the menu)
  13. This might have confused you,; you should already have everything needed installed. Just go ahead with the download and install firefox. Unless I do not understand something Konqueror is a web browser (as well) you can also install opera before you delete firefox if that worries you (I also hinted that you could have 2 versions of firefox coexisting, you can start with that, and then delete the old version via drakrpm-remove. When they coexist all the icons will point to the old version to start the new version you will need, for example either - run it from command line something of the like /opt/firefox/firefox - create a new icon - change the settings in konqueror for files association type txt (then subtype html) to point to new firefox version) Cannot really help with nvidia. Installing firefox will not damage your video settings.
  14. <<I went out and tried to find 1.0.6 but it seems to be not available>> go to get mozilla firefox website the latest version is 1.5.07 I think this is not an rpm anymore hence why you cannot update (watch out you may have the two versions coexisting)
