  1. Greetings there, Well i have been facing this problem for long. I use a kingston 256M data traveller, whose discovery is automatic since mdk 10.1 . Since i have upgraded to mdk 2006,the discovery part is perfect, but when it comes to working with big or small files, the operation is stalled for too long. If a small file is being moved, the mounted part shows the files, but on unmounting the drive and mounting it on a different system or same system, the files are not visible. This is too painful as i have to mail my stuff from linux and then access it on an xp notebook at home. Has anyone else faced any similar problem? How to solve it? thanks, rohit.
  2. Greetings there, i was doing urpmi tomcat5 this is what i got as the final result(after downloading about 93M of software like ant/gcj/java/lib files) installing tomcat5-5.0.30-9.1mdk.i586.rpm from /var/cache/urpmi/rpms Preparing... ############################################# 22/22: tomcat5 ############################################# /usr/bin/build-jar-repository: error: JVM_LIBDIR /usr/lib/jvm-exports/java-gcj does not exist or is not a directory /usr/bin/build-jar-repository: error: JVM_LIBDIR /usr/lib/jvm-exports/java-gcj does not exist or is not a directory /usr/bin/build-jar-repository: error: JVM_LIBDIR /usr/lib/jvm-exports/java-gcj does not exist or is not a directory /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.87769: line 37: /usr/bin/rebuild-gcj-db: No such file or directory error: %post(tomcat5-5.0.30-9.1mdk.i586) scriptlet failed, exit status 127 [root@localhost data]# urpmi tomcat5 The package(s) are already installed [root@localhost data]# so i am in no mans land,stuck.. what next to do? Before downloading the source and doing configure/make/make install, i hope there is something that can still be done to get mandriva specific updates. thanks, rohit. 3. Hello there, well i did say 'yes' to all what e2fsck wanted to fix.. but still no luck.. i am still unable to boot LE2005, so have decided to do a fresh install... on searching over the web... i got a hint about an old version of ldconfig responsible for what happened with me.... but it said replacing it when one can log into the system.. that's not happening in my case. so am re-installing .. another off-topic question.. i have 20G for all my linux work.. currently i am actively using 10G and the other half is unused.. now as i plan to reinstall..i have decided to do a more *mature* partitioning of space..so that when a fs error happens i just can reinstall the / partition.. is this possible? i'll keep mandriva as my main place to work on and play with other distro's too.. so i plan to do as follows: /boot(100M) /swap(512M) /(2G) /home(5G) /usr(4G) also as i plan to install other linux distros(atmost 2) would the above partitions work or i can still get more space for mandriva?? need your suggestions... thanks , rohit.

  7. Hello there, its a GUI verbose background.. the prompt is like a description of the distro(line 1) and kernel(line 2) and the next line is: (none)login: [edit 1] i tried this but does not work... i guess its a login prompt but do not know why its not asking for a password?! [edit 2] i was re-reading the ALT+SysRq tip link, so i realize.. i did not follow the sequence in order... i just did the reboot... also this happened yesterday night also, so i had an fsck where it deleted some inodes... so i hope as a non-user (yesterday & today), there is no way i could have corrupted some system files!? or could i?? thanks, rohit.
  8. Greetings there, i was working on a java program, that included heavy compilation and has a big memory foot-print... at times, the screen did not respond to mouse/keyboard input... then i did a ALT+CTRL+SysRq+B and the system rebooted... then after that when the boot prompt came(i have mandriva/win98/winXP) when i choose mandriva.. it showed the splash screen(penguin with stars on its eyes).. then it went away for a text login. when i put in the user name, it did not ask me for a password and went back to the same prompt. i tried running in failsafe mode but the same experience.. i am unable to go past that login.. though previously i had a full-GUI login... PS: my win partitions are working fine... kindly help me get out of this problem.. regards, rohit. [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]

  15. hi ian. i too have seen those prefeences... i guess i did not explicitly put in detail what i want. here it goes... when i login, i wish if i could have a silent login kind of a thing... you know i login but no one knows i am really logged in. that way 99.99% of the times i remain away without the logged in buddy knowing how many times i realyy logged in and out! hope that explains things a bit better.. regards, rohit.
  16. Hi again ian :-) i am not using any kinda authentication for sending... also i have the yahoo's free account, so does it anyways provide sending the mails thru email clients? i do not want to receive the mail, i mean after 1GB on web, who needs to download them! so i am just wanting to set-up the sending part of it. regards, rohit.
  17. greetings there, i got the solution to the problem after using urpmi. its a highly addictive tool...! well i did opt for the free plf files :-) one query though... How do one choose auto-away option in GAIM? i have been looking for long but have't been successful.. i had seens and tried the -w option but it does not seem to work. any GUI based work-around? thanks, rohit.

  20. Hello again. Yaa the names are confusing... i guess i'll leave it for the time being... get to know more of it,and then add it... also if i choose compressed index, would troubleshooting,if needed later on for a specefic package, take more time? or mandriva/mandrake sites and google be enough? thanks, rohit.
  21. Hello again, well i got my MDK from a local LUG, burnt it on cd's... so should i click for the non-free plf's? or simply stick to plf's, will the free-plf suffice? also i guess i'll be leaving prefix as i'll be getting used to this distro for some time before i moved to any-other.. what do you suggest? regards, rohit.
  22. greetings there ian, i guess you got it right.. i have MDK 10.1 Official distribution and i got gaim for 10.0. i am currently configuring the media as you told to do... i just wanted to know what these plf-free and plf-nonfree refer do.. ? also what does prefix to be added to each package mean? thanks a lot for your help.. regards, rohit.
