  1. Hello, Need to install flashplayer, and I see it is on the 2006 free apps list. Can't find it on my 3 disk set or on the update source (using the install manager). Also cheched the deinstall to see if it was already lurking on the system - no). Wondering why it isn't there, where I can download an rpm version I can install via the installer, and what other plug-ins are also missing?? Has anyone else run into yhis problem... thanks -- Roger [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  2. Hi, Just to close this out. Unchecking the update box on Firefox did not resolve the problem - still encountered download flowing into my system. I stopped using Kontact as my mail app and installed Thunderbird, and have not had a problem since. In the interim I installed a few updates, and maybe that was it. I tend to think I had something to do with Kontact (didn't like the app anyways, so maybe biased....) Thanks and regards -- Roger
  3. Just a note - in Firefox 'edit-preferences-advanced' there is a box for 'Software Update' - periodic check for my extensions and themes I unchecked this guy, but don't know if it will help or was the cause. Wonder what else is lurking out there... Thanks -- Roger
  4. Well, it started again and I ran netstat -na in console. Not sure what it all means but figuring predominately are... tmp/.x11-unix xo tmp/.ICE-unix/dcop 3743-1137702704 /var/run/dbus/system_dbus_socket not sure if this is even the right info to pull from the screen. Let me know any suggestions for fix or right stuff to report back. Went on until I disconnected modem this time - really a pain. Regards -- Roger
  5. Hello, Thanks for the suggestions for lilo. I wanted to use the 10.0 as an interim system prior to getting the 2006 fully up. The 2006 is operational now, so the 10.0 is not so important. I did try to update xorg via the update server last night - after 3 hours of download (supposedly successful) there was a load error and I lost the graphical interface (obvious when I tried to boot later). Sadly I didn't catch the error message after install (not even sure that I had a cancel option at that time). One of the 5 related uploads clearly did not work. Reloaded the system today off disk, and will wait a bit to fix graphics problem via xorg update..... Thanks again -- Roger
  6. Hello, Graphics problem mostly resolved by updating 'kdegraphics" - still a bit of vapor trail, but nothing that remains after a second or so. No resolution of the lilo problem on hdb. I assume from the lack of response it is more that a simple issue to resolve, and so will move forward without access to 10.0. Thanks for the assistance, and I am sure I will be back for more help soon.... Regards -- Roger
  7. Hi, Yep, sadly I am on dialup and I can see the bits coming in. My browser is stopped, and nothing else is running that would be drawing off of the web, so that download is going somewhere..... No ill effects as yet. I just got my system functional yesterday, and am ready to start updating the system tonight - long, painful process on dialup, so any suggestions on a priority basis would be appreciated!! I do have a screen artifact issue on KDE (earlier post on Mandriva Install) but would like to tackle things on a priority basis (many evenings no doubt). Regards -- Roger
  8. Just 'finished' my 2006 free install, and second time now in a couple of days now a fair size file is downloading into my system over the internet?? Does not seem to be associated with the browser, and with a seperate mail app I assume it is not that. Is Mandriva helping me out in some way, like updating my update source automatically??? How can I find out?? Relative newbie, if it isn't obvoius enough..... Thanks -- Roger
  9. Hello, I think I encountered your problem during my 2006 setup. When I changed screen resolution (in the control center - monitor) from 16bit color to 64bit color I got what it sounds like you've got. Changed it back and things returned to normal. That resolution on my 10.0 Official on exactly this same hardware worked fine - not sure what the problem is on 2006. Reducing the color bits just may work for you, unless you need the 64bit color....... Hope it helps -- Roger
  10. Unsuccessful at getting lilo to work booting off of hdb. I was able to insert code into /etc/lilo.conf, and get my old linux distro listed on the lilo menu, but boot of the distro failed. Not sure what info will be useful, but I will guess and just ask for anything helpful that I missed. First off, the boot of 'linux old' started out in verbose mode. Not sure why that happened, but I guess it should have been an indicator. 3 failure messages, all seemed to be USB related. a) initializing USB controller (usb-uhci) : FATAL could not load /lib/modules/2.6.12-12mdk/modules.dep no such file or directory b) mount usb filesystem mount : mount point /proc/bus/usb does not exist c) loading usb printer - FATAL cound not load /lib/modules/2.6.12-12mdk/modules.dep no such file or directory script in lilo is : image= /boot/vmlinuz label='linux old' root=/dev/hdb1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append='devfs=mount acpi=ht resume=/dev/hdb5 splash=silent this is what I pulled out of /etc/lilo.conf for 'old linux', aside from changing hda to hdb, and there was a vga=788 which I didn't add. I did use the lilo tool in the 2006 system configurator to add 'linux old', which may be the source of the problem. I did open up the /etc/lilo.conf file after adding via the configurator and all looked well with the code addition. Hopefully this is something simple to fix with USB (and moving off of verbose). I am getting skilled at pulling out my computer and shifting the hard drive jumpers, but I am not sure that is a good thing...... Please let me know what additional info required to help troubleshoot this. Thanks and regards -- Roger
  11. Harddrake2 tells me it is an 'ATI Mach64 3D Rage IIC'. I have not opened the system to verify, but I can. Thanks -- Roger
  12. Hello, Installed 2006 free today (as well as XP) and had some questions/issues. On the 2006 screen there are residual black bits of the various text (and other) box outlines that remain on the screen (dragging a box makes a real mess....). Don't know why they are not getting refreshed out when they are closed - I don't have the problem on my Mandrake 10.0. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I heard that KAT might be a bit buggy, and is it a good idea to delete it for the time being? Is that going to cause any other problems. I don't envision myself using it... Finally. I have the 2006 and XP on the same disk (master), and lilo (hopefully the correct name, as I am working from memory) allows me to select between them on boot. I also have a secondary drive with 10.0 on it, but lilo didn't spot it and it is not listed as a boot option. Can I do something to include it as a boot option - I would like to use the 10.0 while I am setting up and working the bugs out of the other two systems. VERY detailed instructions essential!!! As a side note, if anyone cares, the 2006 was much faster to install than the Windows XP. In addition, the ability of Mandriva to ID hardware and set the system up is a real benefit. After having used 10.0 for a couple years, it is kind of appaling to have to load up driver disks for the various hardware items to beg XP to work. Got to have it to run some MS specific programs (and to scan, it would still appear) but I wish I didn't. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Roger
  13. Thanks, I will go ahead and physically swap the drives. Sounds like my current Mandrake 10.0 will neither know nor care prior to installing the new system. Thanks again -- Roger
  14. Thanks very much, it sounds like an ideal solution (given that I can actually implement it : )) At the risk of further revealing my limited knowledge, do I have to physically swap the drives or is there a software means through a revised definition of the system boot process?? Thanks -- Roger
  15. Thanks for the clarification. It sounds like I am back to my inital question, since XP does indeed want to be on the primary drive. Currently Mandrake 10.0 is on my primary drive and my secondary drive is empty. I am assuming that the boot loader (pardon terminology if incorrect) defines the sequence in which the devices are read, and that I can change the designation making my current primary drive secondary and the current secondary drive primary. Given that I can do that, then I can retain Mandrake 10.0 on my now secondary drive and perform the install on my 'new' primary drive. Should there be a problem and I want to boot Mandrake 10.0, then I can change the boot sequence back to where is it now. If this assumption is correct, any guidance on how to change the boot sequence would be helpful. Thanks for your patience -- Roger
  16. Hello and thanks for the fast reply. Wanted to get clear on this before I started.... When I install XP, I assumed that it was going to want to be on the primary drive. Given that I can install XP and 2006 on the secondary drive, I will then have Mandrake 10.0 on primary drive and XP/2006 on secondary drive. I will contact re edits to the boot loader at that point (given that I can't work it out). I assume that I will still be booting off the Mandrake 10.0 on the primary drive, so I should still have web access. Regards -- Roger
  17. Hello, My objective is to install Mandriva 2006/XP dual boot, and am now running just Mandrake 10.0. The system has two hard drives, 10GB and 45GB, with the Mandrake 10.0 on the 10GB drive and the other drive basically sitting idle..... Is it feasible/easy to do the new install on the 45GB drive, alter the drive boot sequence (excuse the probably incorrect terminology), and then retain the existing Mandrake 10.0 on the now secondary drive?? Any suggestions would be appreciated, as well as pointers to simple info on altering the boot sequence. Also, is the creation of a dual boot on Mandriva 2006 a no-brainer?? If not, then correct setup parameter recommendations would be appreciated. I just know enough to be DANGEROUS!! Really looking forward to getting the new installation complete and working with 2006. Thanks -- Roger
  18. Thanks for the input - 2006 it is!! -- Roger
  19. I realize this is a subjective question, but I have to rebuild my system now, and am/was planning to use 2006. I did notice that 2006 was just released, so I am wondering if it is a good choice or if I should go downlevel to a more stable Mandriva version. I am a relative newbie and can stand only very limited pain...... Thanks -- Roger
  20. Hello, Newbie looking to upgrade the sane on my Mandrake 10.0 official. Having endless trouble getting at my Epson CX6600 scanner, and think that maybe (hopefully) a newer sane backend version would help...... Is the latest sane backend compatible with Mandrake 10.0? Hate to download it and have it detonate my poor system.... thanks for any input -- Roger
  21. Hello, One other interesting point.. When I ran image-file-permissions I got the scanner at usb:001:002 and in the hardware configuration tool in the control center it thinks the scanner is at usb:001:003. Not sure if this is an artifact of it being a multifuntion printer/scanner, or if this is actually an issue. If it is an issue, suggestions for a fix would be appreciated. Do I need to delete and reinstall my printer/scanner at this point, now that all of the drivers are supposedly correct?? Thanks -- Roger
  22. Hello, and thanks for the tip. I did check and default user did have scanner group access. I also gave default user root group, with the same result - invalid argument. I did also see that there was a known problem on epson multis, and edited the /etc/sane.d/dll.conf file to comment out net (net -> #net). Any additional suggestions or diagnostic requests greatly appreciated.... Regards -- Roger
  23. Warning : Newbie Working to finally get my Epson cs6600 scanner functional - it is a multifunction that is supposed to be Linux supported (why I got it). I am on Mandrake 10.0, and the printer works fine. Loaded the 6600 drivers, and validated functionality via console (user level) comands: sane-find-scanner (fine), and scanimage (fine). Still could not initiate a scan via xsane or kooda. Tried scanimage -T on the console and got sane_start: Invalid Argument Any ideas on action to take or diagnostic to use. I think I am sooooooo close, but something is in the way....... Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated -- Roger
  24. Hello, I did look on the winehq site, and it does appear that there are current binaries to download, specifically for Mandrake 10.0. Based on my limited understanding, it seems that the managed download via the urpmi is the missing aspect. Perhaps more homework is in order..... Thanks and regards -- Roger
  25. Oh my, everyone has been so precise and specific up to this time :o I thought that was to initiate Wine.... In any case, it seems that I am on a absurdly downlevel version, and need to find a URPMI download source so that I can get the current version. If anyone knows of a source I would appreciate a pointer to it - I have looked around and have had no success (seems like the Mandrake 10.0 sources stop with the Feb 2004 version....). Thanks for the help and the clarification on the command line issue -- Roger
